While it has been mythologised as one single event, the Christmas Truce actually occurred in several places, although by no means over the entire Front. Indeed, it was not the only truce of the war; while it never occurred on the same scale as 1914, there were impromptu truces throughout the war. Indeed, in quiet sections, there were often periods of "live and let live" truces where neither side fired weaponry to give periods for rebuilding trenches and so on. While it probably wasn't what one would call common, spontaneous truces were a significant enough issue that high command on both sides took significant steps to try and prevent it.

Always remember this truce. When British and German soldiers laid down their arms around Christmas 1914, to exchange gifts, share season's greetings and play football. Germany won 3-2 (allegedly). This is the only real event of its kind that happened in the 20th century, if at all. This should be a time remembered, cherished, loved. Thanks for bringing it to life, Jörm, you magnificent bastard. >inb4 hasn't event started yet >inb4 edited for grammar reasons

It just shows that even when at times of war when all is dark, humans can still find a way to shed the light, facing uncertainty and potential death these young men laid there arms down and some at first were still hesitant, accounts from the night was that at first instead of gunfire across no man’s land you’d hear the hymns of soldiers singing Christmas carols, there was football, gifts and lots of drinking for sure, for one night the war stopped to allow for some light to be casted over the darkest time in history.

A distant member of my family was conscripted to the German army, being a part of the Danish minority in southern Jutland, a part of Denmark that was back then part of the German Empire after the war of 1864. He died on the Western Front in 1917. It is a conflict very much removed from my reality and from the modern day, luckily. That one night back in 1914 they proved that it would one day be possible. I hope he knew that.

Merry Christmas to all, Especially those that have fallen during Christmas anywhere on the globe, those that still serve during Christmas and can't be at their families. May you all have a Merry Christmas!

The song " Christmas in the trenches " always makes me tear up. I don't know if it's my German heritage or my Christmas on the FOB That makes it more sensitive. Merry Christmas you all.

This all just feels so overwhelmingly surreal. People being forced to massacre and slaughter each other for years on end relentlessly and ruthlessly, coming together as people during a collective celebration.

Like I said in the last video (but about African history) most people don't realize how wonderful history is to learn about...but also how tragic it can be too. This is amazing and I thank you for this video. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Every year I drink on behalf of these soldiers and I smoke for them to. Not as a mourning for those who never made it home but as a celebration on behalf of this display of humanity. In celebration of the human spirit. Merry Christmas everyone.

Still baffles my mind and breaks my heart that this actually happened. Buncha dudes playing football in the snow only to shoot at each other again a day or two later.
