Stillmore, Georgia | Rural Town All But Abandoned?

Stillmore, GA is a town where you blink and could very well miss it. Way out in the middle of nowhere, its home to 435 people (less than half of what it used to be in 1920). The poverty is a real problem here, affecting about 1 in 3 people. Jobs are hard to come by, amenities are about non existent, on the upside rent is cheap and real estate is lower priced than most in the country. Going down just about any street you will see abandoned homes, automobiles, and commercial buildings. With the loss of crops, burning sawmills, and railroad workers leaving to find better opportunities, Stillmore has yet to recover from it over 100 years later. Can it be revitalized? Let's take a drive and check it out!

Those wrap around porches early in the video were gorgeous! Made the houses seem quite grand. The American flags, a symbol of pride in our country, seemed oddly out of place in front of buildings and a town that America seems to have all but forgotten.

This town looks so quiet and eerie, like everyone just boarded up and left yesterday. Almost scary, but I love that kind of thing...great town to do a scary movie in!

My dad grew up here in the 20s and 30s with his 4 brothers and sisters. I have a photo of their house from 2002 when someone who was fixing it up let my dad and his brothers inside to take a look. I was hoping to see it here but unfortunately did not. Great video..thanks for the view around town.

Wow. You can definitely tell the town is near abandoned but at the same time its quite clean and looks like the people who still live there at least try to keep it better maintained, which made it seem like a friendlier place. I wonder if the residents would welcome newcomers/outsiders or if they would be against the change that would inevitably happen. What a town, though! Thanks for another great video!

I was surprised by the large number of national flags against this background of poverty.

As far as dilapidated towns go, this one looked less bad due to no garbage around and the landscaping not taking over the structures.

Even if a town looks deserted I am still fascinated looking at old houses and store buildings. Love it. Show more.

I would think this would be a great location for production of a Hollywood movie. It may be run down but the folks still there take pride in what they have. It’s a shame there’s not more opportunities there.

Those houses were once filled with life, dreams, joy and hardships of people who once thought they will live there for at least forever.... And homelessness populates majority of Californian cities and towns.

I remember going to Henrys Johnsons General Store when I was a kid back in the 70's and 80's. There used to be a railroad running through the town and had a semi-pro baseball team way back in the day. I think it was the county seat of Emanuel County at one point if I'm not mistaken. I grew up in the area and drive through the town every chance I get. It has some interesting buildings for sure and the place has seen better days.

I've driven through Stillmore many times over the years (I prefer to take back roads and not the interstate when I travel between Savannah and Atlanta). I've stopped here to take photos. It's very eerie. I've never seen a person on the streets.

a town, not a city. Some of those first homes were GRAND residences in their day, what a shame no one maintained them

"Can it be revitalized?" I don't think anyone is interested. There is food processing plant at the city limits called Crider Foods where I work. There is also a small private school a block from the Methodist church (the big brick one).

Anyother Mayberry. It's so sad. Who pays the taxes on those places? How can the town afford road work and such?

You see a lot of those beaten-up red roof farmhouses throughout the entirety of Emanuel County. You just have to do some looking around.

How did the church manage to remain so well maintained? This place reminds me of the song Tobacco Road by the Nashville Teens.

My hometown 💔. Moved away in 2016 to join the navy. So sad to see . I’m just thinking about the day my kids come up and ask me “dad where did you grow up at?” “ dad can you take us to the house you grew up in?” 💔

I live 30 minutes from still more in the Vidalia area and I will say, similar to Oak Park, Stillmore is far from any major city where jobs are fairly accessible. I guarantee that the 35% poverty rate comes from people who only find work in the town instead of working elsewhere or working from home!

Thank you so much Linda! No the road isn’t my home as much as it feels like at times. I actually don’t have much time to film so I try and squeeze in what I can. Which makes it under a lot of pressure and unfortunately much more expensive as I can only get so many before needing to head back. There’s so many variables involved. Hopefully soon I’ll be able to fix that.
