I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again, Vernon Reid is one of the most criminally underrated guitarist of all time. A straight wild man!

I agree 100%. Reid had a great style...sounded like it was about to go off the rails then he'd bring it bk in perfectly. A wild man indeed

I saw them open for the Rolling Stones in 1989 Oakland Coliseum. At the time this was the only song I knew by them (getting a lot of play on radio). They put on a great show! The crowd loved them.

Same, but in L.A. with GNR and the Stones. We were all blown away. The energy was incredible.

Their album, VIVID came out in 1988 which they won a grammy for in 1989 for Best New Artists. The band consists of members: Cory Glover: lead vocals, Vernon Reid: guitar, Will Calhoun: drums, and Muz Skilling: bass(he was later replaced by current bassist, Doug Wimbish).

The point of the song is that the savior lies inside the individual, and that "leaders" tend to be false prophets

Fantastic song. I believe it is generally thought that the message is one of caution. Leaders often have tons of charisma, or personality, and people who follow them can do good or bad in their name. It points out that often times a leader could say things that might not make any logical sense, but those who follow them will buy into those statements as if they made sense and were fact. Nearly every leader he mentions was not purely good or evil, though they might have tended more toward one side or the other. The last line is so important: The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.

This is another awesome song, I remember when this first came out it blew people's minds of an all black rock band they couldn't believe it, I think they did it to show people how political and cultural leaders who use there charisma to gain blind devotion from the people, basically they're saying that we the people we have the power to give the person the power, just don't blindly follow anyone, also we also have the power to take it away, why they did it I don't care I just love this song, I like that line when he sings when a leader speaks that leader dies that kind of you know struck a point, I love the solo that that blew my mind it blew everybody's mind, absolutely awesome, I knew you would like this, I believe it came out in 1988 believe it or not I thought it was a little later than that, this is in my top five, I love this, wooooooooo, thanks

First of all, thank you for this reaction. I always felt Living Colour never got the fame and respect they deserved. The entire band is at the top with talent. Especially Vernon Reed, whom I consider one of the greatest guitarists in the world. As far as the lyrics go, Corey Glover wasn't speaking about himself. He was speaking in character as the embodiment of populist leader. It was basically a criticism of and warning against looking at any leader as an idol and a solution to all problems. They are human with human flaws.

Mussolini was an Italian dictator in World War II. Cult of Personality is referring to charismatic leaders that people follow and worship like Gods. They'll believe anything and everything the leader says.

The show "In Living Color" assumed they could use their song "What's Your Favorite Color" and they had never been consulted. When they won a grammy Corey said "Living Colour, the band!" becaue the show got very popular and this amazing group got snowed under by the music genre siloing and confusion with the damn TV SHOW! I love that show, actually, but this is a tragedy! Benito Mussolini Also, examples of followings: Swifties, Beyonce, Eilish, etc. Trump is the prime example, btw...
