I have made fish eyes for trophy taxidermy. My techniques in a nutshell ; I start with an appropriate diameter acrylic rod...(the first ones I made were done with clear screwdriver handles) I round the eyeball with a rotary sander using progressively higher grits of sandpaper until the surface is polished with 5000 grit and final is done with automotive polishing compound and a cotton buffing wheel. Next I carefully cut the rod off square and sand and polish the flat side, slightly rounding the edge. Then I drill out the pupil with a round dremel bit. Trout pupils are not perfectly round, they are rounded triangles with a more distinct point towards the nose of the fish. That hole is then polished from the backside using rolled sandpaper in a drill chuck Again using progressively higher grit until the pupil hole can be polished with a Q-tip in a drill chuck using compound till all whiteness is gone. Then the painting is done. I use spray paints and small brushes as you do. Solid black for the pupil and metallic paints with regular pigments blended to create the mottled reflective look of a natural trout iris. A simply painted-on pupil can never have the dimensional 3-D shape of a drilled pupil. I also leave some areas of the iris semi-clear with a silver baking paper to add yet more dimensionality. I go by close up photos taken of live trout for lifelike realism. I have bought trout eyes from taxidermy supply houses and I never used them because they just don't look real. They always make the pupil perfectly round like stuffed Teddy Bear eyes in a trance. A well made and well painted eye brings a fish mount to life. Although most trout mounts use only one eye a well made and well placed eye can indicate the direction I want the trout to be looking..., Most fake fish eyes can't do that. It is an art with all the devil in the details.

Johnny, I totally agree. This man is the best teacher I've ever had (and I mean that sincerely). My parents paid for me to go to Catholic school during my highschool years, and Allen crushes it in comparison. "Hopps University" all the way!...need a new t-shirt with that on there now...lol
I Know this was done 3 years ago. But I’m just now seeing it and it is FANTASTIC! I can’t wait to try it! Thank you!

I've used this technique and adapted variations for several years! I love that you've done tutorial on it. ♥️ You can stamp the pupils on using the flat end of a skewer or the rounded end of a tiny paintbrush...of course dollar tree now sells a dotting tool with dual sized ends. There are so many ways to adapt this....you can use nail polishes....I've also printed out the irises and modpodged those onto the glass after making pupil and adding accent first.

I was wondering if you could simulate eyeshine by leaving the pupil clear. Then take another cabashon that has the rounded side painted with a reflective paint as a backer. So 2 cabashons for one eye. One the colorful iris, the other as a mirror to create the eyeshine through the clear pupil?

Great information Mr. Allen. Your a awesome artist and even better teacher. I have a quick question. On one of your previous videos you showed a pro tip on airbrush cleaning chemical which was rain x bug remover. I’m sure it’s safe or you wouldn’t have showed it. I’m looking for a good cleaner for my airbrush that I spray mask paint from. Can I use rain x for color changes and to clean my air brush or should I use it with caution? You are the only person that has came up with this brilliant ideal. Hope to hear back from you and like always thanks for everything.

I disagree- I have done it both ways- I also prefer the speed that the spray paint dries- these I can also light up WAY better than fingernail polish because of the thickness. they are largely identical aside from the slight translucency which allows one LED to make them shine.
