The Hugh Masekela story is a long and exciting one: the two times Grammy awarded artist is Africa´s most important jazz and world musician. He has covered the globe and played with just about every top star you can think of. Hugh Masekela wrote a number of international hits and sold several million CDs. He even topped "Jumping Jack Flash" by the Rolling Stones with "Grazing in the Grass" in the US charts. Another very popular song of Hugh Masekela called "Bring Him Back Home" became the anthem for Nelson Mandala's world tour following his release from prison. Some of Hugh Masekela´s activities are a while ago ... but he is still making history:
In 2010 he opened both - the Kick off Concert and the opening ceremony of the World Cup in South Africa - a worldwide TV event. His touring schedule was massive and included major festivals and venues like the Carnegie Hall, NY and the Royal Festival Hall in London or the Mela Festival in Oslo, where he performed in front of 80 000 people.
In 2011 Hugh Masekela caused maximum surprise when he joined U2 on stage in one of the biggest concerts U2 ever played. More than 98 000 people celebrated Hugh Masekela in Johannesburg when Bono called him to join them on their hit "I Still haven´t Found What I´m Looking For". Hugh Masekela highlighted another series of festivals all over the world and played the Hollywood Bowl together with Wynton Marsalis. He was awarded by the Etnosur Festival in Spain and received the WOMEX 11 Award for Artists on 30 October in Copenhagen.

This song really has only 2 chords. The rest are "passing chords". When you can do so much with just 2 chords... you're on another level. Respect!

Rain is spiritual meaningful in Africa it's not a coincident it started raining at end of this song. It is a response from our Angels, they received the prayes.

My eight year old grandson heard this while riding in my car. I heard a little voice say,"Grandpa! That's the best Jazz song I have ever heard!" Hugh's music and politics have passed to the next generation. :-)

True. Hugh was such a performer and entertainer. Story teller indeed. His rapport with the audience was really something. He could be so intense and playful at the same time. The strange thing about him was how he never got old. He was still his quirky, hip self into his 70s. RIP Bra Hugh.

I've heard this song hundreds of times and it never fells to stir my soul. My ears don't know the words he speaks, but my soul sings with him flawlessly every time. My mind's eye sees the train chugging along the tracks down the mine shaft to the diamond that will make everyone except the person who discovered it rich. Stimela

A supreme artiste. Just supreme. And his band also is as tight as the fist of ebenezer scrooge. He has a habit of giving free concerts and I once saw him live. He is a really gifted performer, storyteller and artist-the kind of person who if they performed for five hours it would be too short.

This is the only live version of this song I like. First heard the album in Japan back in 1984. Bought if off the cover, without hearing a single song. Beautiful music, lyrics and that iconic voice of his. His incredible trumpet playing and breath control was fantastic. Do yourself a favor and give Waiting for the Rain a listen.

TY for your work in magnifying harmony in the process of creation. It is through This Truth and Beauty we are lead to liberty. Please watch the presidential candidate Dr. shiva. I’m hoping we can hear a debate with the candidates even if a volunteer has to be found to mouth their words for them. With a little bit of luck we will have an election ‘24 let us humbly pray for strength to carry us forward to economic justice for all.
