Stimulus Transfer Control Procedures - Examples and Explanation | BT Exam Review

Stimulus transfer control procedures is one of the most difficult concepts for ABA practitioners to grasp. But it isn't that hard! As an BT or a behavior analyst, stimulus transfer control really just means fading your prompts. You want to bring the response under control of a different SD by reinforcing the response in the presence of that SD.

So, is stimulus control transfer and prompt fading the same thing? Because prompt fading is the very next task on the assessment. How would we differentiate the two?

Prompt fading is stimulus control transfer, but not all stimulus control transfer is prompt fading. Sometimes you may just need to transfer control from one SD to another and that SD may not be a prompt. In that case, you need to start reinforcing in the presence of the new SD that you want to have control of the behavior.

Hello again !!! thanks for another helpful video. My test is in a few hours. I keep having issues in the same area. "Learner has learned how to zip up his jacket independently. Without being taught, Learner is later able to zip up his backpack independently. What is this an example of? " questions like this confuse me, I think... okay is the Sd to "zip" is this a response? is this stimuli generalization ? sometimes I cant identify the different parts, like " your cell gets a notification, and then vibrates, what is this an example of?" again, I think is the sd to check the phone? is the vibrate a response to that? but I keep getting it wrong I know I'm NOT doing it correctly.

In your first example, what is the behavior/response? Zipping. If he is able to zip other things in untrained environments, what would that now be? He has generalized to other stimuli, so stimulus generalization. Think about who the learner is in each situation. In the phone situation, you are the learner since it is your cell phone. If your phone vibrates it is an SD to check your phone because checking your phone after it vibrates produces reinforcement. You are definitely on the right track, but maybe overthinking it. Think - who is the learner in the situation - what are they doing? - are they doing it in response to something? - is there a consequence for their doing?
