Kevin, I live north of Atlanta and we had more ice than snow. I was careful not to get my quad wet but that was not my issues as I almost froze. My fingers was frozen which made flying almost impossible. Anyway I got some nice video. PS welcome back!! we missed your videos...

Im currently reading the ham radio license manual. A lot of good info and the full pool of possible questions in the back as well as a glossary. I was gonna take the test tomorrow, but holiday travel got in the way. Also, I saw some bad damage from a goose on a gulfstream at work, had to replace 90% of the nose.

Just as a tip to help others. I used the Conformal Coating Enamel version and treated my XHOVER PDB with the built in 5V and 12V regulator. I think I got the stuff a little thick on the 5V regulator and it smoked one me. I think it is very important to make lite coats on the PDB or other components that generate heat.

I use acrylic and corrosionx painted on the hot spots. Have had several dumps in the snow. Even flew with the frame packed with snow. Unstoppable

SurvivalistMedia is just corrosion X OK?
@SurvivalistMedia8 жыл бұрын
AveryFpv I used just corrosion x and flew maybe 10 batts in the cold. Had a TBS micro trans start receiving a constant 1400 throttle input at all times. ESCs Blheli30s, PDB Armattan F1, Fury F3 all fine, but the TBS went bad. Don't know if it was the cold or the wet, but that's when I added the acrylic. New TBS has been fine for over 40+ batts and 5 big snow crashes. Flown wet, and I mean drenched with corrosionx alone, but can't claim 100s of problem free flights. It was 7 degrees F when the TBS died.

VIDEO IDEA For You: Do a prop guess challenge to see if you guys can notice the difference in the props you use. For example, Mr Steele does not know what props you set him up with, and he has to fly his drone and then guess. You can use the Fatsharks as blind folds.

conformal coating should be done before building the quad, to ensure all electrical parts gets coated. This is what FliteTest did. Also, a conformal coating which is visible under UV light to ensure you haven't missed any crucial parts. Don't hesitate to coat bare wires as well. In fact the motors could be done as well. Once built, coat the parts that are clearly not coated. If you have already built the quad, just dunk it in a container full of conformal coating, without the motors. Will add extra weight and will need to be re-coated in the areas where repairs are being done.
@BerriBerriJam6 жыл бұрын
Really helpful tip at 18:00 where you say you don't use conformal coating on the connectors like USB ports because they will either prevent electrical connection or rub off, so you apply Corrosion X instead. Do you think you could use this waterproofing technique to turn your Sony RX 100 V camera to become weather proof? At least use the Corrosion X for all the connector, buttons, gaps on your camera so that it becomes weather proof. They'll be lots of camera buffs who would like to weather proof their cameras if this technique works.

Thank you for the info. i was wondering about water proofing motors and the windings. so. i dont need to worry about that. thanks
@chrissieracki29598 жыл бұрын
Here in Maine, it is important to keep the snow out of the motors cuz when you crash in the snow, the warm motor melts the snow, filling the motor with water and then when you get ready to take off, the motors can sieze. So I have put plastic caps over the motor vents on the bell. Problem solved, fly for hours.

You may be interfering with the cooling process, though if you fly in cold weather I suspect it's not a big deal.

Hey Stingy. As an A&P and pilot I think the absolute worst case would be a light helicopter. You've got 4 inches of plexi in front of your face that can take 350+ KIAS of Canadian Goose and like you said, engine out isn't all that bad. Light heli I picture more as a windshield 'splosion. Just my two cents. Also, I know your Xhover but you seem to prefer underslung battery and mid size 'decks' as opposed to Steel and Chad who fly aliens. Comments on that?

12:03 - Aren't commercial airplane cockpit windscreens rated/tested for bird strikes? Or am I mislead? Carbon density is lower than bone, plastic even less. Unless it's perfect scenario of an aluminum prop nut hitting dead-on (in which case the drone is going horizontal and not even climbing), the windshield would just crack, no? I doubt a runaway/failsafe drone could climb up to 20,000ft where a plane is at full cruise speed. Any strike would be low altitudes at approach or TO ascent...the same places bird strikes are most common.
@stingersswarm8 жыл бұрын
Speed restriction below 10,000 ft is 250 knots. I gave it worst case that a quad would reach. I go 250 knots at 2,000' almost daily when I'm working.

I always wondered if you're using any OSD or telemetry voltage reader on your quads. None of these are listed on the build so my guess you're just using timer. I'm getting into fpv and I'm gonna use 1500mah 4s batteries. What flight times I should get with that battery and 5 inch props?
@stingersswarm8 жыл бұрын
Mostly I rely on the timer but I use telemetry also.
@stingersswarm8 жыл бұрын
Oh and I have no idea for your timer. Too many variables. Just start low and do some experimenting until you work it out.

If you waterproof the leads (especially the USB port), how is that still usable? Shouldn't it prevent any connection? What do you do if you have to resolder something? Does the conformal coat burn? Thanks!
@therealjonnyd7 жыл бұрын
You would use CorrosionX for connectors. "CorrosionX bonds with an underlying metal conductor as a Fluid Thin Film Coating (FTFC) that is just one molecule thick (0.0004"); when you place two such treated conductors in contact with each other, the resistance between them is only about 0.1 Ohm. So why doesn't it short out adjacent conductors? A separation of even just a faction of a millimeter is so many molecules wide that it exhibits a resistance beyond the billions of Ohms that our instrumentation can measure. In practical terms, it's an insulator." As far as the conformal coating burning, yes, you can simply solder through it.
@ThePartnerBros7 жыл бұрын
How does the corrosion X on the connectors work ? It doesn't make any sense to me because to prevent short circuit you have to prevent a connection but how would they still work if they did that? Thanks.

I am assuming that the conformal coating is no longer flammable after drying? I got a bottle and there are tons of warnings on it about how flammable it is and to keep away from heat etc. So after it has dried and you have to re-solder something I am assuming that is ok and not going to flame up. Also if you re-solder something do you need to reapply the conformal coating to that area? Thanks!

Hey guys. I have a question about waterproofing. Do any of ya'll think WD-40 is useful for waterproofing quads? I didn't think WD-40 would help with waterproofing. I have experienced WD-40 with multirotor parts (SunnySky 2300kv Motor, Kiss 18a ESC, Hovership PDB, and a 4S LiPo battery) but once I placed it in water, my setup will work for only a few seconds, and then the ESC stopped working once I unplugged my setup and replug it back in. I only dipped the motor in the water when this happened.
