In Chinese it is called Cho tofu or stinky tofu. In its uncooked state, It smells like crap. It is delicious when it’s fried. I’ve had this several times as a street food in Shanghai.

I know about stinky tofu but I don't see many people eating it. This one does look good and I had a feeling you'd like it. I didn't know it was typically deep fried. That's really the only way I'd eat it haha. The chilis and other stuff with it make it look quite delicious.

It looks and sounds like it's the same texture as fried spam, tbh. When you fry it right the outside gets that slight crisp while the inside stays a bit more soft/chewy. It's like a slightly crispy springiness.

🤷🏻‍♂️ I never know why people make such a big deal about stinky tofu - you eat cheese, drink wine, and many other fermented things. Stinky tofu’s smell isn’t even that bad, try smelling Icelandic cured shark - that is what you call stinky.

@@lula4448 we all loved it, my wife, and my two sisters and I. We each got our own hot pot/ramen bowl and shared fried chicken and cumin lamb. I loved the Stinky Hot Pot bowl so full of stinky things and flavorful broth. It actually wasn't spicy enough for me, but they are great and have sauces to add in like chili oil, sweet chili, two others that I can't remember. Go try! It isn't all that expensive!

That stinky tofu would have sided perfectly with the chicken bone broth I had for lunch! I added black pepper, a bit of salt, some coconut milk, a little fish sauce, some lime segments, and some fresh dill and parsley. This would have kicked it up! Yum :)

My mother used to make us fried tofu but usually w teriyaki sauce in a wok. Great texture. She was a health food mom. Which was a challenge…but her tofu was AMAZING. Crispy n soft too Ive never been able to recreate her texture n flavor of tofu. Now I have a soy allergy. So I watch now WHAT IS A “VOLITILE COMPOUND”!.

It’s smells like a septic tank, it was definitely palatable when I ate it but it also taste like if someone swiped it between cheeks after a long hot day, ya know that musty mud butt oh a construction site. mapo tofu and stinky tofu are different stinky well its fermented but mapo is spicy tofu and it usually in cubes ma means numbing in chinese and basically the spice is so spicy its numbing
