Love you Chael, but 100% disagree. Every athlete is well past their physical prime in the early 40's. Jon is past his prime too. Stipe a was obviously a similar version to the Mike Tyson we saw the other night. It was clear that neither of them could get off the way they once did. Their eyes and their brain could see and process when a strike needed to happen but their body wouldn't react, and by the time they were ready to throw a strike, the opponent and moment was gone. Stipe had literally nothing. He was slow, plodding, he was pushing his rare punches. Father time absolutely beat Stipe most. Jones did the rest

@nickkemp497914 сағат бұрын
I agree with the other commenter. In the first round Stipe took a couple of hard body kicks, got taken down and got viciously ground and pounded with elbows that almost knocked him out. Those things effected everything Stipe did after that. He was flat footed because he was scared of the takedown and the kicks and he was a little slower because he almost got knocked unconcious. Also, this was a big Stipe. He was almost 250.

Stipe didn't look like Stipe looked last time he fought. There's probably multiple things to blame the loss on and many of the reasons have to do with time, like his age, like the years between his last fight and this one etc. The real problem is that Stipe was beaten by a dynamic fighter in Jones that beats him in multiple disciplines and Stipe had only a very slight edge with his boxing, literally everywhere else he was bested. I think this is true across all of Stipe's career, Jones would have always beaten him if he wanted to go back and forth between light heavyweight and heavyweight.

Aspinal is at the top of one of the weakest heavyweight divisions that I can remember. Y'all give him too much credit. He's beat all the same fodder that were given to stipe, ngannu and cormier. Sergei is pretty much the only person who had a decent record. Again against a weak heavyweight division. Tom may be strong , but I just don't see him beating jon. People forget that he dragged DC to the ground and outwrestled an Olympian in both fights.

I think most people are completely wrong about Stipe vs Jon, and if you’re reading this, I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Gonna be honest, I think Stipe just didn’t care about this fight like he should have. I think his only objective was to finish his contract, and anything said by him before the fight was said to prevent skepticism of retirement to maintain interest in the fight. I don’t think he had the competitive mentality that he should have had. I don’t think he was there for the mental battle, and I don’t think he had faith in himself. Could he have won? Don’t know, maybe if he put forth more effort. Was he past his prime? Absolutely. At the end of the day, this is entertainment. I think Stipe was in it for the paycheck, a fight to fulfill his contractual obligations, and that’s it. I don’t think Stipe gave it all he had. And to be honest, it’s really disappointing. Such is life I guess.

There has never been a question on Jon's fight ability. The problem with Jon in the last 4 years is fight and fight all the top guys, or get out of the way. That issue raises a BUNCH of questions. One of those is ending the GOAT conversations. Jon's actions outside the fight are the very things that have, are and will always put a shadow over how great he is, what he achieved, and his legacy.

Uncle Chael with the spot on analysis again. I am really impressed with how Jon used his IQ to find a way to win against Stipe. Hoo yaaa, I was preaching that all night-he’s a god-gift. I kept imagining, what if Jones had been disciplined and focused all along? People are completely overlooking this fact: if Jones had spent more time honing his gift, he could have become a historical icon for his fighting ability. Man, it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. But I also understand-it is what it is. His past life experiences have clearly aligned to bring him to where he is now. We’ll see that in the Aspinall fight. At this point, though, I can’t help but see it as a waste of potential. He’s messed up a lot in life, but the fact that he still has it at this age is an opportunity. If he plays it right, he could still make it all count.

so you are saying stipe wasn't flat footed, slow, and clunky? I love Stipe but come on. He was doing all of the wrong things
@darrellowings234315 сағат бұрын
Jon is that good and Stipe also lost to father time. He fought two fights too many. The DC fights were wars. He got eye poked so much he had to start wearing glasses. He was a slow and I don't think he's seeing the punches well but Jon is better as a heavyweight than he was as a light heavyweight. Jon clearly got bored and was partying and doing drugs before. He's taken no damage in either heavyweight fight and they didn't last long. You see no reason why we couldn't get 3 or 4 more from him but that may be a trick of the eye. His body may be telling him it's time to be done. I can't help but wish to see him fight Tom, Alex and Francis to be done. He erases all doubt he's the best ever. Tom is going to be a more dangerous fight. I think he'll win handily though maybe by decision. If at some point he's willing Dana should make an inter promotion fight happen with Francis.

Watching Jones manhandle Stipe, he made Stipe look like Chael Sonnen in that fight and treated him similar. No one said Chael was "old" or past prime. I think Jon Jones did that using his fight IQ, he wasn't significantly faster, he wasn't stronger, he just picked him apart, did the exact same ground and pound thing he did to Chael Sonnen.

I think Stipe looked great physically, and was being patient in the early going. Problem was Jon’s left teep kick was landing harder than I’ve ever seen him throw it, and tough as he is, that, and the 1st round GnP took a massive toll on Stipe. Was hesitant and biting on all of the feints after that. Jon was very calculated.
@batmanwins57015 сағат бұрын
Jones has always used those level changes with his striking as an incredible tool to do more than deal damage. It gives his opponent a lot to think about and throws them.into a defence mindset. When the opponent is in that mentality it gives Jones room to work and analytically assess their reactions. It makes it a game of cat and mouse and being the cat is always the position Jones sets himself in. Anderson Silva was the Spider, Jones is an Alley Cat.

I completely agree! Stipe’s life was gone after being taken down in round one… it was a beaten…
@smolentsevalexander14 сағат бұрын
Stipes striking looked slow, as rogan correctly pointed out numerous times, but his head and body movement looked on par for heavyweight. I think rogan pointed out another important thing which is that stipe was looking for an opening which never came. Lastly, when he did get an opportunity to punish jones, several times, he just let him go and thats what puzzles me the most. Did dana pay stipe off to make sure he could set up a mega fight vs pereira/aspinall? Sounds farfetched but you cant deny it would be of tremendously lucrative to the ufc shareholders. And its not like stipe would need to sell it, it would simply be a safety net against that "strikers chance".

Actually Chael, there are so many examples in boxing of great naturally bigger men beating great naturally smaller men that there's even an old adage: "A good big man beats a good little man". As with everything, there are ALWAYS exceptions but that's generally true.
@SMac8613 сағат бұрын
I think Stipe could've used a tune up fight 2 years ago before fighting Jones after 4 years off, if he wanted to be at his best. He looked in great shape, still had his chin, but he did look a little stiff and a little slow. At 42 I think he definitely need to make a choice between being a fireman or being a fighter, his body just can't do both at the highest level anymore. Like take 3 months vacation from fire fighting and focus only on fighting. But that's not Stipe. He has accomplished more in this sport than most people could hope for, AND has a job that most people can't qualify for. He has nothing to loose, no one can shame him. So why not have a fight against the GOAT and go out for more glory?
@SMac8613 сағат бұрын
Also I have to agree, he lost to an incredible performance by Jones. It's so rare to see someone walk down Stipe like that, and out wrestle him. And that kick at HW? Incredible. As much as we were making fun of JBJ taking all that time to bulk up, he sure did it right. What I cant stand is his Jesus and God and all American Trump groveling. I will shut it off every time he goes into one of those rants, it's just distasteful to me.
