Love this series, keep them coming. Lots of great tips in this episode plus a very important one about why taking the time to line up the surfaces in the S&C phase will save time during the prep phase before fiberglassing the exterior. As a life long woodworker, the fit and finish has become my best skill. Thanks for sharing.

It looks like a great way to remove drips runs and sags from polyurethane as well. Maybe just sand paper glued to a popsicle stick. I like the idea of using tape as protection. I didn't really think going into this video that I was going to learn anything but I did.

Great explainations about the tools, and intention. Might help adding that the rasp is basically a whole bunch of tiny knives. They only cut using the tiny edges.

Good point. Thanks

not scrubbing it and settling into a motion and being intentional is such good advice

It is easy to get sucked into just repeating a motion until you forget why you are doing it

Hello Nick, I’m enjoying 10’s of hours (probably much more)of your boat building videos. (Thank you!)I am building the strip built petrel play ( super fun.) Do you think adding a Skeg is necessary? I live on the sound in WA state and paddle often and have own(ed) many kayaks. I think it would be fun to build a Skeg but on the other hand it is a rec crossover so it probably isn’t going to be doing crossings as such so maybe it’s not needed? Your or others who own ones thoughts? Thank you

Hi Dennis, watch my latest video. Bill and I talk about the necessity of skegs towards the end. TL;DR: not needed, but nice to have.

Have you considered flush cut pliers for cutting the copper wire?
@NickSchade8 ай бұрын
Flush cutters will leave less sticking up, but I find you still benefit from the tape-and-file trick

@NickSchade If you wanted to stain the whole hull rather then a pattern like you used here. Would it be advisable to stain the boat now? after touching up glue drips and overhangs but before the fiberglass? Is there a reason not to do that?
@NickSchade3 ай бұрын
It is best to apply stain before you do any assembly. Any glue or epoxy will resist the stain and be hard to even out.

This may have been asked already, I watch on tv usually and don't access comments, but why prestain, knowing you'll be working the wood, and have difficulty matching?
@NickSchade8 ай бұрын
All those drips of epoxy that we had to remove would have made it hard to get an even coat of stain.

If you wanted to stain the whole hull the same color, could you wait until after the rounding to apply the stain to eliminate the touchup?
@NickSchade8 ай бұрын
Possibly,but you see all the drips we sanded off? Those might interfere with the staining. I do it this way so I don’t need to worry about those drips.
@jimdaniels718 ай бұрын
Ah, good point. Those would definitely show.

Is there any wisdom in prepping the boat as you did today and then stain your pattern without the worry of matching planned and sanded areas?
@NickSchade7 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I understand the question
@Skihist27 ай бұрын
Why not stain the boat just before Fiberglas?
@NickSchade7 ай бұрын
Where ever there is epoxy before staining, the stain will not work. So, the drips would be spots in the stain@@Skihist2
