Why such a large hole for the shifter shaft? Why not pull it up to the teepee and just cut a hole big enough for the shaft? Then just slide it over the top of the shifter. Don’t cut it down from the hole.

Because the knob on the shifter is 2" in diameter...the knob doesn't just twist off as it has a push button in the center of it and is a pain in the ass to disconnect...that's why a bigger hole and a draw string.
