I use Faultless iron cleaner when I’m ironing a lot of quilt pieces! It comes in two small tube..I get an old towel and finish cutting or fold to be a bit larger than my iron so there’s plenty of room to run my iron over it several times… cleans it so nicely… I don’t have to worry about getting anything on fabric keep the pad right by your iron so you can run it across occasionally.. love it my iron glides … (wash pads and reuse,,, )

Thank you. Very helpful. I have had the same problem, it is horrible to try to take out the stuff out of your quilt fabric.

I continuously hit the steam button on my Conair steam & iron (Costco sale) to stop the gurgling and spitting like you said. Not only did it help the iron's performance, but it's toasty warm in my sewing room now! Thanks Rob!!

Helpful and timely. The bottom of my iron is not shinny. Light toast color. Starch, forgot the pressing cloth.

The mister bottles can be purchased at a beauty supply store like Sally… I have one for water and one for a pressing solution.

Thank you so much for this video. Just yesterday I had an issue ironing a pair of pants. My iron base needed to be cleaned. And I didn’t clean it well enough. So I researched new irons last night. Was confused. Also, a while ago I decided no more steam ironing. I bought a mister, and like using it. I will now remember the wool mat. Are there irons out there that are not steam irons?

I've started using the Acorn Pressing Solution when making my quilt blocks, the solution only gets applied to the seam you're pressing and my quilt blocks are super flat now!!! Stitchin' Heaven does carry the Acorn products as well.

Has anyone had any experience with Euro Steam Irons? Saw a demo at a quilt show this past summer...looked interesting.

I have purchased several Euro Steam irons. They are finicky. You have to be careful that you don’t overfill or they will leak water. The earlier versions that I owned cracked around the hole where you put the water into. If you open the bolt where the water is contained, you can get burnt fingers if the iron has not cooled. I only used filtered water. I now have the newer version and it seems to be better in comparison to the older versions that often spit water.

I was wondering how to help seams lay nice and flat. Sometimes it happens and other times it a struggle. I watched this with hopes it was mentioned. It's probably a 80.00 iron though.

I quit buying new irons. The water we have here will destroy the inside of any iron. I buy used irons that show no signs of ever being used.(yes, I plug them in, and make sure they do work, before buying them). I only use them as dry irons. I use a spray bottle to dampen the fabric before I press (not iron). I have more than one size of ironing board. I always set my ironing board up in the Master Bathroom where I will never forget to disconnect the iron. I close the bathroom door to keep one of my cats from knocking my iron off. I don't want either of the cats hurt, my floor damaged, or the iron damaged. Plus, getting up and walking to the bathroom helps keep me from getting stiff and sore from setting and sewing all day.

Schmutz is the German word for dirt, mud, dust or grime. It’s exactly pronounced as Rob has said it.

Look at everyone taking credit for the word Schmutz. I’m PA Dutch and we say it all the time. No matter where it comes from, it’s fun to say, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. When I put on Chap Stick, I’m putting on Lip Schmutz . And you know exactly what I mean. 🙂
