Decades ago I lived in an apartment. Came home from work late at night and opened the windows to let the heat out. No AC on during the day and it had been in the 100's. After awhile I started hearing "help". After I was positive it was a human, I called 911. By now it was after midnight. A bunch of officers showed up and eventually figured out the apartment the "help" was coming from. Thankfully he had an open window an officer was able to climb into. Turns out an elderly man disabled from a stroke had fallen in the bath tub and couldn't get out. He had been there since around 3pm. Due to the heat no one was outside. Thankfully the man was OK and escorted by the police came to my apartment and thanked me. We never know when God will use us to save someone's life.

I’m sorry about Mav. It’s heartbreaking to lose a loved one, no matter how many legs they have. What a day! So glad you trusted your instincts! Hopefully there’ll be a little follow up story in a local paper or something so you’ll get to find out how the driver is. Jenn, nothing wrong with buying bread, but if it does bug you to buy it, consider a bread machine. I had a cheap one that lasted me 12 years and made a really decent loaf of bread. It wasn’t artisan, but it was pretty good. Had a lovely crust. You spend 5 minutes putting the ingredients in and press a few buttons and 3 hours later you have a loaf. Mine finally gave up last week and I spent about half a day thinking maybe I could make do without one by using the stand mixer to knead etc and then I thought about turning the oven on to bake a loaf in the middle of summer and thought nope, not doing that, so I bought another one. I splashed out on a fancier one this time as I now know I’ll get my money’s worth, but honestly there are only a few features which the new one can do which the old one couldn’t, so a basic model would do what you need. If you don’t like the hole in the loaf from the paddle you can use the machine just to knead and for the first rise then hand shape and bake in the oven, or you can pull it out just before the bake and remove the paddle so you just have a little hole. It really is super quick and easy, and is a way to have homemade bread without putting in all of that time and effort. If you do decide to look for one, the biggest thing to be aware of is that many of them make a very tall loaf that won’t come close to fitting in a toaster, but there are models with more of a rectangular pan which makes a loaf that looks more like a regular loaf. They seem to have lots of them at goodwill at bargain prices so maybe keep your eyes open for one and give it a try.

What a blessing you were there! I once got a flat tire on a very rural rarely traveled dirt road in the middle of a Vermont winter. It was 10 degrees that day. The snow that time of year makes everything silent… you only hear the trees creaking in the cold. As I was changing my tire I heard what sounded like a cat crying out but very faintly. I got curious, crossed the road and went to look… there was a car buried in the brush about 50 feet off the side of the road but completely hidden. Inside was a 17 year old girl her dashboard had crushed her legs pinning her in the car. She’s been missing for 3 days stuck in that car in jeans and a hoodie when it had been dropping well below zero at night. She survived but her legs were never the same.

You hearing the man screaming probably saved his life. We homeschooled our kids and I incorporated cooking as part of the classroom. Fractions from recipes had to be doubled, tripled, or even cut in half. They sure learned them well. I was able to use real life situations to help them understand what happens in the real world. My daughter is 42 married with 4 kids and is starting her Masters program. She had full scholarships for her Associate's and bachelor's degrees. My son is also married with 3 kids and in the military. His oldest is in her 2nd year of college studying Archeology. I am proud of how they turned out and the good morals and values they have.
