I think Nunn said he didn’t play bad moves on purpose, he played moves that were equally good but which offered chances for his opponent to go wrong. Nunn says his play was tight and controlled.

6:50 in - the 1924 NewYork Tournment?!?! That would be Emanuel Lasker - not Capablanca (finished second) - who won when he was 55 years old!! He took years off at a time and yet was still competing at the highest levels well into his sixties. Extraordiary talent in several different fields.

Well whatever they say about Lasker and private world championships also applies to Capablanca and Alekhine. Both handpicked and waited for someone to cough up the cash. And ‘not losing in 8 years’ - well this has something to do with world war 1 too.

Lasker took his title from the true great of the previous generation, and then beat several of the would-be rivals of his own generation very convincingly, before finally giving up the title to the next generation's great. I think Carlsen is as likely to surpass Lasker in the number of successful title defenses as he is unlikely to surpass him in years as champion, but I'd say the broad strokes of their stories are very similar so far. History never repeats itself, but it often rhymes.
