2 IN 1 ELEVATOR!? Epic Dover Traction Elevators @ Washington/Wells CTA Station - Chicago, IL

(5-28-22) This is the REALLY UNIQUE elevator at the Washington/Wells CTA station in Chicago, IL. I've never seen a setup like this where there is a split cab creating effectively two elevators in one. One cab serves the street and mezzanine, and the other half serves the mezzanine and platform. You're not supposed to be able to ride all three floors, but if you have a friend with you, it is possible to do. In addition to the strange double elevator, there's also a regular elevator for the other platform.

@@stlelevators I really wonder what the CTA’s logic was when installing their elevators, because there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to whether they installed traction or hydraulic elevators at each station, because it varies a ton.

I doubt it. It's set up like this to have accessibility to both the mezzanine and platform while still keeping the faregate system in place.

The setup itself is quite interesting but bizarre because it's two elevators attached as one, it may lead to some people unable to leave the desired floor like the part when you went to the other cab and there is no door at Mezzanine. Similar way, it's kinda like Aon Center which is actual Double-Decker and it was designed in order for both decks to serve the assigned floors like when the lower deck has to serve 80th floor, the upper deck has to be at 81st floor which it doesn't serve. So, this kind of arrangement is very valuable space saving and at the same time, very concerning.

How’s it concerning that it saves space? You can just push the button you need and it will eventually go to that floor.
