I just realised something: this episode is essentially Duck and Dukes done right. It's a prologue episode leading to more mysteries being unravelled later on, and the issues the characters have - Duncan's stress over Adeline's death, Rusty and Peter Sam's prank, Ivo Hugh's simple curiosity and Rheneas and Sir Handel knowing more than they're letting on - are all built upon in the next episodes being produced instead of waiting four more books.

At least in the way these were all released, It's highly indicative that he was at least filming each episode after making the previous one. Me and my friends have been theorizing about this in our discord server, and we believe we already have some idea of what's going on. At first, we thought the ghost Duncan saw was just a hallucination, and the fact that we, the audience, could see it too was simply for storytellling purposes, a visual representation of what Duncan was seeing. However, bear with me a moment. Duncan reacts to Rusty's story as though he's never heard it before, which means, unless WnW directly states that A: Rusty told Duncan what the engine looked like, which he didn't, we heard him telling the story, or B: Duncan knew a Quarry Hunslet who died at some point, *the ghost is real.* He wouldn't know what it looks like, so his mind wouldn't have been able to conjure up a hallucinatory image of a Quarry Hunslet, which is what the engine appears to be. This is based on the appearance of the engine in it's "alive" form at the beginning of Rusty's tale, and earlier concept models for Adeline's basis being a Quarry Hunslet 0-4-0ST. Also, note how Rusty specifically states the apparition of an engine appearing before Duncan *wasn't* his doing, so it wasn't part of the prank. Now, considering WnW's storytelling is heavily RWS inspired, such realism doesn't leave much room for the supernatural. So, we're liable to never see this properly addressed or answered. Another conclusion we've drawn is, if the ghost ISN'T Adeline, then it means TWO engines have fallen off The Old Iron Bridge at some point. Rusty told the tale of one of them, and at the end, Sir Handel and Peter Sam mistook his story for Adeline's. It also makes sense considering we hear someone call out around the bridge at the end, and Duncan felt as though the ghost was trying to tell him something. Perhaps the ghost was trying to alert Duncan to Adeline's location being nearby? Further proof that there were two fall victims can be found simply by looking at Adeline. She is seemingly a custom design, with *6* wheels, not 4. Her coal bunker is behind her cab, not in front of it and split in halves, like a Quarry Hunslet. Whether the second fall victim, the actual ghost, is ever addressed is anybody's guess, and it could just be Rusty was telling the story wrong and that it actually was Adeline, but, regardless, the storytelling and visuals in this have been bloody outstanding, and I can't wait to see what comes next. Roll on the Adeline mini-series, and if you've read the entirety of this, well, basically an essay, I'm sorry for the length but thank you for reading, and I hope you've enjoyed my speculation on me and my friends' behalf!
@WildNorWester3 жыл бұрын
That's a well thought out story, but there's something missing. Rusty and Duncan don't know where Rusty's story happened. It was just something they heard on the radio.
@evanclarke55613 жыл бұрын
Perhaps that engine was Godred who's literally a free spirit. The same engine from Bad Look Out who fell from the Culdee Fell Railway down a mountain. What if he's a shape shifter?
@engineerskalinera3 жыл бұрын
I think the most reasonable conclusion is: Duncan hallucinated or imagined the ghost. The voice at the end is Adeline, who did fall off the bridge, but survived a-la-Lily and had been spit out of the mud by the ever-changing waterflow in 2012. Though the location of the bridge in this episode seems a bit screwy. It's supposed to be on the quarry branch, which was an out of use dead end spur even by 1997, unless the Ministry of Defense is still using the quarry as an ammo dump. Here, it's depiced as being part of the lake loop line? Or not, because of that switch at 0:44...? If I was to guess about Adeline's origin, given that she was never seen before or mentioned in either the IoS of RBTL, is that she was the original MoD engine, brought in to handle the ammunition dump in the old mine. After the crash, she was replaced by the "beetle-like electric locomotive".
@WildNorWester3 жыл бұрын
@@engineerskalinera That switch at 0:44 is the two ends of the loop line converging. Geographically speaking, I use the route as presented - and the one I use has the old iron bridge as part of the loop line. There's a junction just down from Skarloey station where the quarry branch starts.

Fantastic work as always! I've been with your series since Season 2 of STEY was being uploaded (though I was under a different name back then), and I just want to say how much of a pleasure it is to watch your series develop into its current form. The visuals in this episode, both the sets and the engine models, are stunningly beautiful and a treat to the eyes. The story developed so uniquely, I could never have predicted it. Although I would prefer the "suspense" scene of Duncan encountering the ghost on the bridge to have lasted longer, it was made up by the very last line: "How did you make it look as though another engine was up there?" "I didn't." Boy, that's bone chilling! Not to mention, there are just so many questions left unanswered: We know from the director's cut of "Desperate Measures" that Adeline had been around when SKR #1~6 were all there, so how come Peter Sam, Rusty & Duncan all seem completely oblivious to her fate, suppose that really was here fate? Were they never told? And why did Rheneas look uncomfortable during the mid-credit scene? I'll not make too many assumptions as we barely know anything about Adeline as of now, let's just say all these mysteries keep us hooked! Looking forward to more of what you have in store! Take all the time you need, we are just waiting to be spoiled XD

I'm glad ya like it, thought I'd expand and voice more characters alongside Peter in the series. Seeing as Peter Sam had been a silent character after the previous voice actor departed and as WildNorWester wanted to bring him back into the spotlight instead of being a background cameo appearance I was offered to become his replacement voice actor.

It is clearly noticeable that it is the same person from their voice and the names in the credits.
