Signal Chain: Bass - Hotone Britwind Amp (green channel) - DI out - Sonicake Sonic IR (8x10 bass cab IR) - Interface.
The strings are pretty light gauge, but don't flap about too much. However, it may be improved with a slightly heavier gauge or a higher-tension set. I quite like how these strings feel. I will try some flat wounds on this, but keep these strings in case I want to go back.
The hardware is perfectly fine. Everything works just as it should. I don't think there's any need to upgrade the bridge or tuners for the sake of improvement, but it's always fun to hod-rod an instrument like this if you don't mind spending more money.
The stock pickup is great! It sounds like a P-Bass! I am considering trying an affordable Alnico 5 pickup out of curiosity though.

Got mine for 100 dollars with an amp. Upgrading the high mass fender bridge, bone nut, fender vintage pickup, pyramid strings and grover tuners for (200 dollars in total) makes this an incredible bass for my two year old son:)

I just bought one! The pick ups are good! I can't believe it. (I own American standard P and J basses) This thing will probably see as much use as those. No joke. At first I thought it would be a fun toy for playing while watching TV but it's more than that. Don't sleep on these!

Yeah it's definitely a keeper for me. I changed the pickup for an affordable, unbranded alnico one. It sounds warmer, but with less output now. Not better, just different, but I really like it as it is now. No need to actually change the pickup at all... or anything else really.

This video is exactly what I needed to watch to make a decision on my next bass. Recently traded a Jaguar bass for a handful of high end pedals and wanted to find the most versatile yet shortest scale bass I could find to replace the Jaguar. Was a toss up between this and the bronco but I gotta say your review was so in depth with the different tone settings, alternating between fingers and picking. Really seems to nail the p-bass sound in such a tiny package.

Thanks for the comment. I'm a guitarist who uses a bass for recording at home and the occasional gig (I have a bass gig next month in fact). I got this bass for that gig actually. I've just added a hi-mass bridge which I'll put in a video soon. Killer bass IMO!

Things to consider: The Bronco is a slab body bass and the Mini-P has a contoured body. Slab bodies have no contour cut on the backside of the bass and no bevel cut where your right wrist rests against the body. The lack of a backside countour cut is not a big deal for me, because I'm an older guy with a belly which pushes the bass away from my ribs. However, if you have an absolutely flat stomach, the straight edges on a slab body might dig into your ribs. The backside contour cut is designed to keep straight edges of the bass body from digging into your ribs. For me, the lack of a wrist/forearm relief bevel cut on a slab body bass is much bigger problem. Some bass players do not rest any part of their, plucking wrist or forearm rest against the bass body. But, many bass players contact the body of the bass with their wrist or forearm. This is why Fender put a relieve bevel on modern contoured bodies. The bevel cut acts like a ramp. Instead of laying your wrist over the straight edge on a slab body, the bevel cut allows your wrist and forearm to lay flat against the body of the bass which is more comfortable. In photos it's easy to spot the curvy looking contour cut on the backside of the bass. The bevel cut on the front side is harder to see in a photo. It just looks like a shiny spot on the bass where your plucking hand wrist and forearm contact the body. As far as comfort goes, contoured bodies are preferred over slab bodies. Some guitar players and bassists won't even buy a slab body for this exact reason.

Just picked one up, they are great. Fender actually made one of these for about 4 years. I believe they ran from 2002-2006. They didnt have tone knobs though, just a single volume knob. I later bought one that had been modded with a tone knob and sold the other. I regret selling them awhile back. These are very similar, with cheaper parts of course, but Squier has been making great value guitars and basses for years now. By the way, Fender Japan makes a mini Jazz bass thats just like this, a shrunken down Jazz. They are pretty pricey when they pop up for sale and they sound killer. Another one I should have kept. Maybe Squier will make one next year.

Good video, good comparison, and liked your streaming commentary at the bottom to give the viewer something to put eyes on. For the price, this seems to be a nice-sounding and fun to play instrument. Agreed that part of the fun with an instrument at this price point is that you can feel free to mod it to your heart's content. I like the Ocean Turquoise idea better than the red, but either way should look great!

Surf Green is a great, classic looking color. I also like, Daphne Blue, Foam Green, Lake Placid Blue Metalic, Sherwood Green Metalic and Butternut Yellow. Goddess Gold Numbers 2 is another classic color. Even though the Butter Yellow is a newer color, it looks pretty classic to me. Don't listen to people who say those colors aren't "manly". If every guy sported a red, white or black bass, the world would be a very boring place. My Mustang PJ bass is Olympic White, but I ordered a custom, Pearl Green pickguard for it and I think it looks great. I hope it will look even better after I install my cream colored DiMarzio pickups.

Cool video, I have the same one only in Red. I’m considering changing the pickups to a set of DiMarzio Relentless. I hear what your saying with the string flappyness, I still have the stock strings on but I picked up a set of flatwounds which I will try at some point in the future. Where did you purchase your 3 ply scratch plate? If you could provide a link that would be great. I’d just like to upgrade the cheaper parts for personal preference really. There are a few videos on certain upgrades, namely, a better bridge but it does keep tune pretty well!

I got the pickguard from an Ebay seller in the UK by the name earlpilanz. He has loads of colours to choose from. I also installed a Fender hi-mass bridge, which was mainly for the flatwounds to fit better, but I decided I didn't like the flatwounds as much as the stock strings (I've really grown to like the feel of the light-gauge stock strings). The hi-mass bridge stayed on and I feel it makes the bass sound a bit bigger too.

There is a little neck dive, but nothing that bothers me really. I have since put on a Fender hi-mass bridge and it has reduced the neck dive a little, but not a huge amount. The hi-mass bridge is quite a nice upgrade IMO (less rattling at the saddles), although I prefer the look of the vintage bridge.

Just saw the SB Uk you did which imoressed me. This sounds fantastic too shelf mate. Which amp do you prefer is the US got more headroom better suited fir pedals? Cheers
@RobCmusic
@RobCmusic Жыл бұрын
I can't decide between the two, which is why I'm glad I have both. IMO US is not quite as loud, but there's very little in it (it has slightly less gain, at least that the JMP model of the UK). Both amps take pedals equally as well, but each amp takes certain pedals better than the other and vice versa. You'll likely still have a journey ahead of you to find out which pedals really work for your rig. I use the '57 voice of the US the most, which is similar to the JMP of the UK, but less bright and a little cleaner. The '57 voice may possibly be my favourite of all the voices available from both amps, but depending on how I feel on any given day, that changes too!

Hey thanks Robert. The strings in this video are the stock strings. I think they are a D'addario short scale set because the gauges of each string look to be the same. I think a normal short scale string set is ok for round wounds. I tried rotosound flats, but I didn't like them on this bass. The stock strings are fine for me and I'll get the D'addarios the next time I need new strings (not for some time I imagine).
