I’m am a long time prepper (20 years) in Oklahoma, during our outages this year, we used PAPER plates because they were also burnable, so they got tossed in the fireplace after meals to keep the fire going, same with paper towels. Also had many packages of wet wipes and used those to clean flatware.

Hi from Hondo Texas! Last Wednesday night was the storm of all storms. We had a Tornado and a massive hail storm. The Tornado took out our pump house and part of our pump. It rained for 3 days after that and we have to wait for the land to dry before a truck can be driven on it for someone to fix it. We have no water at all. The hail damaged our vehicles (made them undriveable), our house and destroyed our garden. Windows were blown out of the bedrooms. The hail came through 3 layers of roofing materials (tin, plywood, sheetrock). The holes they made caused leaks in every room of the house. Roofing materials are all bought out. We can't find them anywhere. We lost power for 2 days and 6 days (so far) without water. The flooding outside made it impossible to walk around the yard. I had to use our camp stove inside the house. I am able to buy gallons of water and now getting water from a friend. We hadn't had a shower in 5 days. We were finally able to buy a camp shower (bag you add water to) yesterday to get cleaned up. I recommend having those. Do you know how many gallons your toilet tank using to flush? Do you have that water as back up? Do you have a way to get the water out of your water heater to use? Have water for a hand washing station. Hand sanitizer is only good for so long on your hands. After a while, it gets horrible. Have separate water to drink. In all honesty, you think you're prepared but in reality you're not. If we didn't have a generator, we would have lost everything in our freezer. I have canned foods, but no way to wash the dishes to warm them up in. When prepping, think of ways to cook, eat, clean without water, power and even propane if that runs out. Propane is out here because of all the surrounding areas are experiencing the same thing. Keep that in mind. The things you may need may not be there when you need them. Remember, I'm on day 6 using my preps with no where else to go close by. Hope this gives you some insight. God bless!

Margie Stokes may you find strength in the Lord in your time if need. I was 16/17 when we lost everything in a forest fire year was 2000. It was one of the hardest times of my life but also one of the biggest blessings. My family lived in tents for about 6 months until it was time for school to start back. We got loads of help from family and friends but choose to live in tents on the property. It taught me so so much about life. And now that I'm prepping again and reading your story. I pray you find the silver lining and keep keeping on. My prayers 🙏 go up for you and your family and everyone affected by tornadoes. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I do the same. Last month pork shoulder was on sale 99 cents a pound any meat less than a dollar is purchased for the freezer, canned or dehydrated. Yup, Learned this method on buying what is on sale that week and what meals I can make with it was a way to start saving money on my groceries then seeing your (pantry)stock pile has also helped cut the many grocery trips that I had to do. This month of may I bought in bulk my sugar, all purpose flour and pancake mix 25lbs bags each. Last month Was my rice, cooking oil and beans also in 25lbs. I say I am good for at least 3 to 6months on all this but fresh fruits and vegetables is my only grocery list now and sales on meats.

I live in northern Missouri. We have a large population of Amish around us and a couple of Amish bulk food stores nearby too. They are a great resource for bulk food and can order just about anything you can think of even if they don’t carry it in their store. A few weeks ago I ordered 100 pounds of black beans and pinto beans, 50 pounds of navy beans, 100 pounds of raw sugar, 100 pounds of brown sugar, 200 pounds of oat groats (this is a new item for us) and 50 pounds of quick oats. This is added to our other food stores. I would add that I can a lot of the dried beans so that they are ready to use. It takes a lot of water to cook beans and in an emergency situation, water is at a premium. I don’t want to use all my water cooking beans. I love to garden, can and dehydrate food. We raise our own chickens for eggs and meat, also pork and beef. We do all of our own butchering and it is good to know where our food comes from. God bless you all!

I think something very important to add. During a major disaster, you could also lose phone and/or computer use. I made a notebook years ago that I divided into sections, and have recipes, medical remedies, how to's, etc. Also, don't forget about feminine products, they can be used for more than one purpose.

Whenever I get fast food to take home I always ask for cutlery. I then store them in a ziplock bag I keep in my kitchen. When the bag gets full I sort and rebag by type. I feel like I scored when I get the fork, knife, spoon, napkin, salt and pepper combo in plastic. I occasionally get asked to bring plastic ware to social gatherings where there will be food. I will pick up bags/boxes of forks, spoons, knives at the Dollar Tree and bring home what wasn’t used. Also as I usually stay to help clean up I noticed most people who do bring the disposable cutlery just leave the extras after the event and if no one else wants them I’ll take them. I recent graduated from Ziplock bags to plastic snap top shoe boxes. The stuff really adds up and it’s nice to have forks at birthday party cake time.

We'll speak out of both sides of our mouths and pretend to be shocked or angry when society falls apart. Kitty litter is also good in case of power outage and you can actually make a little compost potty bucket. After you go just sprinkle about a cup of Kitty litter over top. If you don't have the extra water to throw in the bowl to flush.... Our last power outage lasted 5 days..my son was going down to the river about 5 miles away and bringing home 5 gallon buckets of water for flushing toilet..2 qt. Pitcher is perfect for pouring into bowl and gravity flushes it.. and for boiling to wash dishes..

Vinegar is not hard to make. Purchase one bottle of bragg's and never buy vinegar again. You can use the peelings of a apple to make more. We have a sun oven (think slow cooker), a small camp stove that runs on butane, and a thermal cooker (Saratoga jack) to help conserve fuel. We have multiple ways because we're here in Utah so during a sun oven out in a blizzard may not work, so we have indoor alternatives. I also live both the thermal and sun oven cookers, because in a real emergency you may not have a ton of time to spend on cooking, if your having to clean up the mess or dig people out of rubble or something. It will be nice to have a hot meal waiting away the end if a long tiring day.

P-38 can openers! A P-38 can opener is the little manual can opener that military use. There are also P-51's but I find the 38 easier to use. I like buying them in bulk and have them stored in my camper/camping goods, in a bug out bag (BOB), a few in my kitchen drawer, and randomly taped to a #10 can inside the box in which those big cans were shipped, just incase. I highly suggest getting a bag of these and practice using them!! One can find these online in bulk for about 5 bucks. A great little tool for next to nothing in price. :)

Thank you for info. I find that as a household of two (kids are out and on their own) I am throwing out more veggies and fruits because we don't use it up like we did when kids were home. I am going to give Thrive Live a try. I think the smaller cans will be great for the two of us. PS: Just found you site a couple weeks ago, it's great.

I canned soup last month. I also canned milk (I know. I know. Not suggested.) I stocked up on canning jars/lids. I bought a digital canner. I organized my cool shed for my storage and took an inventory. I also waterglassed (limed) two buckets of eggs. I also canned potatoes and planted a garden in 9 garden boxes.

I learned about vinegar in laundry, from prepper videos of making laundry detergent. Didn't work for me but when I wash on hand I use it then. I live in building with laundry management would have an issue if they seen me put vinegar in the dispenser. I have yet to stock paper goods for kitchen. I have the fold down pan & the Stanley cups to cook. I have to start practicing my tea light cooking very small 1/2 serve of rice. I been stocking broth case water run short.

For those living in the country and having a septic tank vinegar is very good for it and so is old yeasr that you might have in the refrigerator or new.. I put a packet down the toilet every month the whole three packet strip and a quart of vinegar saves on your septic system and a lot cheaper than some others.

Definitely going to reload the condiments. I'm also running low on bread flour, so I'll get some of that this month too. Costco run will be for canned roast beef and canned chicken (maybe) and Maggi instant Indian noodles. I'm also keeping my eye out for n95 masks, because it will soon be wildfire season in my part of the country. VERY important to have n95 (or better) to filter the wildfire smoke, a cloth mask is useless against smoke. I already have us stocked up on quality HEPA filters for our hvac system to keep the indoor air clean when/if things start getting smoky.

Even tho I struggle to eat solid food - I have Gastroparesis/slow stomach emptying - one item I have to store is Heinz salad cream. It’s great. i have lots of plasticware and condiments by saving what has been included in our takeout meals! You've already paid for them and they're in individual packets, and the plastic ware has a napkin (most of them). A cheap way to stock up! You can also wash out the cup or bowl sized take out containers and save them for emergencies. They have lids so you can cover them easily if you don't have other ways to do that :)

Watch commodities prices. The price of corn, both for animal feed and people food, is to be up by over 40% by the end of summer. That means higher meat prices and things like tortillas and corn chips, as well as canned corn.

@@marybethm.9952 We grow about 40 acres of field corn every year. Now,the price of the seed corn, fertilizer, and weedkiller (I know, it's "bad" but you can't grow corn without it!!) has all gone up so much, and the availability is scarce, that it's almost too costly to plant as we never know what the weather will do. We'd be lucky to even break even this year!

New Subbie. Watching from Canada great details. For the past few years now I have a pantry, short term and long term food storage from watching blogs like yours. Also, I use a lot of vinegar for many things around the house like fabric softener, cleaning floors, appliances like the dishwasher and washing machine etc. This month I am concentrating on toiletries like shampoo, conditioners, coconut oil, basic make up, dyes, body creams lotions and different OTC drugs for emergency. I need to stock up on those items above. Normally, I am only purchasing things when on sale so I can buy plenty at least for 6months or more if expiry date is good. Or when the sale is on go to different store to price match the items and get the maximum allowed. This sometimes, gives a longer expiry date because that store do not have a sale.
