My Grandparents and most of their neighbors got through years of the great depression by eating boiled whole wheat berries. Soaking for 24 to 48 hours with couple rinses, gives a much greater level and range of vitamins. Germinating wheat berries even has Vitamin C!!

Awesome! Thanks for checking out my channel. I sat on these ideas for years and finally I acted and I am loving it. I get to learn and share what I do know. And then get input from others. I love helping others and learning so this has been so fun and rewarding. My advice...just start filming. Have fun and be yourself. I use my phone to film, because too much tech gets on my nerves and Adam uses high tech gadgets and production value. Both work...just find what works for you. Good luck❤️

Awesome info and suggestions! I store wheat berries in Half-Gallon Mason Jars then vacuum with my FoodSaver, store in dark dry place (basement) cover with small paper bag to eliminate light degradation. Adding Bay Leaf is optional. Shelf stable.... good for years. The benefit for me is small enough portions and ease of use versus 5 gallon buckets which would be an excessive amount for just the two of us.... Self Reliance should be of PARAMOUNT Concern during these trying times! Suggestion to anyone who has read this far..... Start out with Baby Steps and before you know it you'll be Running.

Aloha Kim, We recently found both your channel and subscribed right away. Since everything gets shipped to Hawaii, we often get box pasta with bugs, (us too found out the hard way..) so years ago we started placing them inside a big Ziploc bags and freeze them for several days. Get them out of the freezer, have the box air a bit (to dry) and we store them in buckets. We do that with plastic bag pasta, sugar, flour, etc. Works great! Thanks for the grain info, we have allergies, and GERD issues that I am sure will go away by milling our own grains. I just purchase the mill, motor and Wheat red berries. BIG MAHALO and Aloha!

I've worked at a non organic flour mill for about four years and the thought process for shelf life really pushed the industry to extract or "sift" the brand and all the other nutrtion off of the wheat. I'm glad you did this video as it exposed some of this. Also I got to see what enrichments are placed back into the flour and I've got to say I don't think I would like to put that in my body. Some of the enrichment was so caustic, that your skin would burn if it contacted it. I'm not alergic to anything at least to my knowledge, but everyone who handled those enrichments would be very red ob the skin due to contact. It even says it on the containers. So the point is whole wheat is better and organic is even better. I currently work at a mill that is fully certified organic. I started there just last year in September and am glad I made the switch. I run the stone mills which we produce whole wheat and corn meal on as well. We also have steel mills where we produce our white flour products.

WOW! Thanks for this comment. Unfortunately, we live in a world now more than ever it's all about the $$$ and not about the health of the people. The bread book that I was reading does go into more detail about the industry which I find very fascinating. And for you to have witnessed it first hand is hard evidence that the companies do not care. That is my drive for this channel. To get more people hopefully to switch from the convenience poisons and make the move to real, life-giving food for their health and the health of their families. No one is going to do it for you. Glad you were able to make the switch to the organic mill!

Wow I just learnt a heap. God bless you and thankyou. Just past few months our family have been suffering all these effects of poor nutrition and I always wondered why bread is considered s9 too for us when it seems to cause so much strife. I knew they sprayed and processed it and reduced the varieties but never considered grinding my own and collecting it and therefore making and only eat8ng our own bread. I mean we do make our own bread but with commercial bleached ground flour and I have stocked up, expecting a shortage but they all in paper bags so now I know I could potentially loose out if I don't freeze and store in a more secure glass or plastic container. I am currently thinking I need to go Gluten free to help with digestion and such but now I'm thinking really just need to find whole wheat berries if I can. I can't thank you enough for these tips. I can say that even though I been stocking up I could see we be in trouble if shops closed for a few months cause I lack the fundamental basics such as the seeds for the staff of life, wheat. Our young son currently has a sore not healing and we all seem distracted and bloated by what little food we eat. But seeing this video renewed my hope in possible options. We live in Australia and it's obvious to me the invitibale planned food shortage and yet most people around me see nothing. Hope I find a supplier nearby because even transportation isn't as stable now since this Russian operation. I'm looking forward to watching more videos by both you and your hubby. Well done to both of you on your content and presentation. Keep sharing your journey with us. Thank you.

You're so welcome; Glad I could help. Yes, I would defiantly store whatever you have in more secure ways. Paper= bugs. Planned for sure...glad your eyes are open! I am no doctor or even an expert but I do know that turmeric is good for wound healing and inflammation. Eat it in a dish or make your own medicines...I have a video on tinctures you might be interested in. If you're not already, maybe start a garden and grow your own turmeric....buy it at the grocery store (organic) and plant it. Harvest the root, save, and plant again. You can also make quick breads (gluten free) with quinoa, buckwheat, rice, amaranth, and oats if wheat berries prove to be too much for your system, but some who have gluten issues with commercially milled flour don't have and issue once they start milling their own from berries. I hope this helps and that your son and your entire family start feeling better soon.❤️ God Bless!

Are you guys growing any of the wheat? Or just storing? Also, if you're a person that has gluten issues..... if you soak the flour in an acidic medium it activates the enzyme phytase, which breaks down phytic acid (phytic acid inhibits the absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc). Basically, soaking your flour in an acidic liquid medium...it makes your end product more digestible, readying nutrients for easy assimilation in the body. Also, soaking your flour is one awesomely healthy change you can make for your family's diet without spending any extra money! Soaking the flour had been done for decades/or longer! But somewhere along the way this info disappeared! Probably due to buying ready made flour. If anyone is interested in this process I can post it! I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes (Kim) I just want to share what I have learned over the years.

Hopeful hint here. Your Jar of wheat berries has wasted space. Throw some baked sea salt to help fill the gap between wheat berries. People can't live without salt. Baking the salt for a short time will help it keep wheat/oats/rice/barley/beans/dried fruit or dried compressed greens dry and supply basic minerals too. paper bagged sugar can too. Food with flavor is a morale booster>>>priceless!

If you get wheat in a bag, I would really consider freezing it...even in smaller ziplock bags that maybe could squeeze into tiny spaces. Any grains that came in buckets is fine and doesn't need to be frozen. If you bought bags they need to be frozen for at least 4 days. The glass jars that I have, have wheat that has been through that process and I go through these daily...not long storage. I would defiantly check your stock. If your buckets have bugs..you will probably be able to hear it. If there are a lot I would probably throw it out. If there are just a few, I would throw some food grade diatomaceous earth on them and leave the extra protein...gross I know, but a few bugs isn't worth forfeiting the food in my book..especially right now.

Question what is the difference between hard red spring and hard red winter?
@homewithkim
@homewithkim 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the difference between the two is just a matter of when and where they are grown. Google: The difference between spring wheat and winter wheat is when the seeds are sown. Spring wheat is sown in the spring and is harvested in the fall. Winter wheat is sown in the fall, lives through the winter, and is then harvested in the summer.

How can you be sure the molecular structure of the grain is ancient? So much of our seeds and grains have GMO or partial GMO structures that confuse our bodies when ingested. I had rheumatoid arthritis really bad but once I cut out most carbohydrates and sugar, it is completely gone. I would love to make bread from grains that haven't been tampered with. Is that what you are showing us? I don't trust Amazon as a source either. And I agree food is medicine or poison. So much of processed foods are laden with soy which is not fermented and therefore it wreaks havoc on our hormones. A major portion of feed for live stock and animals in general is packed with soy so we are getting it from all directions. I'm with you. Whole foods and organic or home grown is the only way to know for sure what we are putting in our bodies. Is Great River the only company you purchase from?
@homewithkim
@homewithkim 2 жыл бұрын
That is awesome to hear...you cured yourself! I can't be for certain about the molecular structure, but I have read up and talked to people smarter than me and I buy what they buy and do what they do. I know that we are doing our very best and that is all I can hope for and I am sharing the knowledge that I have gained with anyone who is willing to listen. I don't trust Amazon with all things, but I have been please with Great River. I like the speed (especially now). We have also purchased from Breadtopia, but unless you're getting a lot, the shipping will kill you. Breadbeckers is another source. I haven't purchased grain from Azure, but I believe they have it too. I would also like to try and plant some myself at some point. We actually feed our dogs raw, like the old days, because we were disgusted when we went down a "rabbit hole" on animal feed. We do, on occasion, supplement with grain free dry feed. We feed our chickens organic grain but health is another reason why I let my chickens free range. Unfortunately, health is not a concern for companies anymore, money is.

@@homewithkim thank you so much for sharing this. (And thank you to your hubby for the referral). My sister is really gifted in chemistry and she went down the rabbit hole too, especially where wheat is concerned. She suffered from horrific rosacea, even had it in her eyes and once she cut out the processed carbs and some dairy, it went away. I fully believe we are being poisoned by our food so that we become dependent on pharmaceuticals. I want to show my grandchildren how to break the cycle. You are making that possible so thank you again for sharing your thoughts with me.

For storing wheat long term... I don't recommend oxygen absorbers... That will kill the grain, not allowing it to sprout. Instead, store with bay leaves or what we do is put a stick of double mint gum in each bucket. We have wheat (non-GMO) that my mother stored that way with the double mint gum when I was 12 years old... I'm 61 now... That wheat still sprouts and is great for eating and planting. I do not recommend the small hand crank grain mill. You will burn more calories cranking than you will get from the flour you grind. The best hand crank mill for prepper purposes is the Country Living Grain Mill. I recommend also getting the nut and bean auger. If your beans are old, they still have nutrients, but they just won't soften up when cooking. Grind that into bean flour and cook it up like refried beans ;)

If you're going to mill the grain, as for making flour, there is no need for them to be able to sprout, ergo there is no need for the bay leaves. That said, it's nice to know that your grain was still viable after 50 years... amazing!

I worked at a health food store for 11 years, have a Master's Degree in Asian Medicine, and went through a phase buying Spelt, Kamut, Hard Red Winter Wheat, etc. I seem to be very sensitive to gluten containing grains (even the whole grain organic versions). SHORT GRAIN BROWN RICE is also an ancient grain (the two largest countries in the history of the world - India and China based their entire culture around them). It's gluten free and never bothers my intestines. Also OATS are a great source of protein and other nutrients. Between SHORT GRAIN BROWN RICE, OATS, BLACK BEANS, PINTO BEANS you are covering a LOT of nutrients - with zero gluten.
