It took me a minute to understand buying bulk as we are a family of two with a less than 1000 sq foot house. But once I figured out price per unit (thank you, Hope!) and optimized my limited savings space, I’ve been making steady progress. I agree that we must be prepared for supply chain problems as well as other situations. I don’t compare myself to other folks who prep, I just do the best ai can with my resources and space. @terryhenderson424Ай бұрын
When folks are beginning a pantry in our current times, it is important to decipher what "bulk means". Does it mean 20, 25, 50, amd 100 lb bags of pantry staples or #10 resaurant sized cans? It can. But it also means things like spending $20 when coming across 3/ $1, 15oz cans of black beans; that's 60 cans. Or $50 when coming across 15 oz, diced tomatoes with oregano and garlic at 3/ $1; that's 150 cans. At the same time, it means eating many more dishes/ foods which contain cornmeal, black beans, and diced tomatoes. At $.33/ can there is less concern about dabbling black beans across other foods/ dishes and there is still a savings if you have to add a little extra cumin to turn Italian flavored tomatoes into Mexican flavored tomatoes; an immersion blender makes tomatoes sauce out of those diced tomatoes too. Meanwhile, looking up recipies turned up a zillion ways to make polenta (cornmeal mush made for dinner versus breakfast) at a considerable savings over bread or potatoes. You can even make polenta using tomato products with a few black beans tossed in. BTW - Many #10 can contents can be frozen in smaller portions so you don't have to brace yourself for a week's worth of say applesauce morning, noon, and night once the can has been opened.

I live by myself (although my brother and sister in law live nearby). I have a pantry in my co-op, and I'm still working out how to use it. So, I will be subscribing to your channel. You are right to point out that for every day the east/gulf coast port workers stay on strike, there is a back up of days. My hope is that the strike only lasts a few weeks (especially with the areas hard hit by Hurricane Helene), because the workers won't get paid either. We have grown accustomed to having things readily available, but we might have to deal with empty shelves for at least a while (even if the strike is settled sooner rather than later). So, I think what I should be doing is finding non-perishable items I can stock up on when they are on sale. We really don't know what will happen to us.

Some choose carob powder because it doesn’t have the stimulant theobromine in it like cocoa. This stimulant is why cocoa is sometimes toxic to dogs. And theobromine in cocoa is the reason it’s bitter tasting. Carob is slightly sweeter than cocoa. I’ve made muffins with it, brownies with it and added it to yogurt and protein drinks. It’s a 1:1 ratio for recipes. It doesn’t taste exactly like chocolate bc it doesn’t have the bitter notes. I still like it. And theobromine is not all bad either. It’s found in medicines… some that lower blood pressure and some that help with urination.

Makes rotating and replenishing the stock easy. We invested in a full house generator a couple years ago to ensure our freezer stock is safe. I'm to the point where I haven't paid full price for meat (unless absolutely necessary) in about 3 years now. Your advice has helped me with that. Thank you for the great content.

Carob for me is less bitter because of the higher sugar content but that is adjusted out when I add less sugar to whatever I am making. Chocolate contains caffeine that gives it some of that bitter taste in the dark candy bars. Good Amish candy stores make a good dark chocolate candy. I need to see if they make it in Carob. This comparison is a general guideline, and the actual nutritional content can vary based on the specific product and brand. Calories: Chocolate is significantly higher in calories compared to carob. Fat: Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, contains a higher amount of fats. Carbohydrates and Sugar: Carob has a higher carbohydrate and sugar content. Fiber: Carob is an excellent source of dietary fiber. Minerals: Chocolate is richer in magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, while carob has more calcium and potassium. Caffeine and Theobromine: Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, both of which are absent in carob.

Carob is a chocolate substitute which is much milder flavored than chocolate. Ypu would use the carob powder like a cocoa powder. It does well with Mexican and the sweet dark vanilla and vanilla as opposed to the sharp whiskey type vanilla. Mushroom popcorn is a bit higher priced but makes a better popcorn ball. I stocked up at that price. Halloween is around the corner and the kids that hand out candy normally make popcorn balls to eat while they hand out candy. The beans and other items sound like they are around the same price. They are good for years. I also started vacuum sealing oils in bottles to extend the life by 2-3 times. Cereal raisin brand is 20oz for $1.25 and it sounds like your cereal you bought was cheaper. Candy quart zip lock bags. York peppermint patties 23 oz for $1.75 Hershey's special dark snack bars 14 oz $1 Amish apples organic $10 a bushel. Mums big plant is $8. Eggs $2 dozen brown medium. Boneless ham $2 lb I have 5 stores to shop and most are not bulk food stores. I am over stocked and working on eating down food. The end of October is the meat sale. I am hardly buying food at the store , just odds and ends. $10-15 a week. I have another person coming along sharing expenses and dividing cases or bags. Did mice ever decide that you should share your pantry with them? Haven’t had insects in my dry goods for a couple decades but did several times before that. I’ve had insects in my wild bird food stored in the garage (for my backyard hobby). I, too, have had insects. But not in many years. Divide content of larger bags into smaller bags and stick into deep freeze for at least 3 days. That should kill any insects or larva. I will not buy things again that I do not use - unless I already have a special recipe that I definitely plan to make and I need an ingredient that I need (that I never used before). However- even with this said- since grocery store prices have gone up so significantly- I haven’t been able to cook recipes from my favorite cook book my husband bought me two Christmas’ ago because most recipes call for special fresh herbs and or spices or vegetables I do not typically purchase. The recipes are absolutely delicious. But, I can’t shoot is way any more because of the high prices. Now, I have to shop the leader sales and only buy things at great sale prices. I have to plan my meals around what I was able to buy on sale. So, it’s been back to a meat, vegetable and maybe a starch for dinner. No more delicious multi- ingredient recipes. Hopefully, after true election prices might drop (overall) and I hope I can once again afford to make recipes from my cook book!
