Leela has a stronger (and expensive to run) neural network compared to Stockfish, that's why it operates at a much lower depth. Stockfish relies on seeing 20 or 30 moves ahead, much more in the endgame sacrificing a small amount of positional understanding. Leela on the other hand compensates for not seeing that far ahead by understanding the separate positions better. And sometimes, this can make Leela see actually further from the position it gets to than Stockfish can see by just physically looking further ahead with lower cost (or "attention") to the separate positions. And that's when Stockfish won't realize, but Leela will. Only if the depth of the tactic is beyond what Stockfish is able to look at.

Something that Levy always fails to communicate properly is when the forced opening book is finished and when the engines actually start to choose moves. In this game, it was move 9 for white, where stockfish plays 9. a4. This means that the everything before this was not a decision of the engines, so things like 2. Nf3 and 7. Bxc7 was not actually chosen by Leela. In the mirror position, Leela played 9. Qg3.

Lc0's strength is that it's so much different than the rest, I believe this is the only MCTS-based boot-strapping eval top chess bot (not sure what's under the hood of Torch though). I wish Levy would take us on a deeper dive about bot depths and horizons and such. It's ambiguous to just say "Stockfish". We need the depth as well - or what kind of time constraints are placed on the bots. Similar to humans, I think what would determine "The Best Bot" is how efficient they are at the calculations within a time control. If the bots get a month per move to calculate and explore deeper into the horizon, I suspect a ridiculous amount of games would end in a draw and there's no way Stockfish would've played Rb3.

I really like the breakdown of complicated material, excellent work! But you do more than just that. You demonstrate the irony and nuances that most people and I would miss.

I was hoping someone would cover this game, it was insane, SF lost as white in an opening both itself and LC thought was around 0.70+ of advantage for white, IIRC it was the first time in years SF lost as white.

Btw there were some words in your comment which I didn't understand, kindly use simple words, I no don't use some words, keep commenting in complex vocab so that people can learn from it too. No offense, but how did Stockfish made history by LOSING?! Give Lc0 the credits it deserves. Lc0 made the history, since it beat Stockfish for the first time since 2 years with the black pieces, but not Stockfish. This video title is at least unfair towards the Lc0-developers and is just a desperate attempt to clickbait. Seriously, you gotta stop that

This is very reminiscent of the AlphaZero games where Stockfish was maneuvered into positions with the most utterly useless pieces.

Nd4 was a poison move. Black got to fix its pawn structure and advance in the center. Leela started to win after that.
