If I'm not wrong the space of possible moves in chess is so large that current technology cannot explore it fully. Therefore chess is not a solved game yet, i.e. You cannot calculate the best move

If you create a "smarter" chess AI, it can beat the current one. I think these are trained by fighting themselves millions of times. At the beginning they suck but as games go on they get better. The skill level at which these duels converges determines the skill of the AI that gets deployed. This skill is mostly pattern recognition of previously played games. The more diverse these games are the more the AI can create creative strategies.
