I was born in '64, and christened in the small church next door to the White Hart pub in Cheadle (4:50). I lived in Stockport for many happy years. Some lovely memories in here.

Saturday morning was allways a trip to the swimming baths with my mates and in the afternoon we all went to the Savoy cinema at Heaton Moor for the cartoons, adventures of Flash Gorden etc! Those were the days!

The photo of Stockport Baths (aka. The Baffs) sent shivers down my spine. Hateful school swimming lessons there in the '60s.

Wow, thank you for so many memories of the Bear Pit, The Precinct, Pubs (Been in most of them!!) & Swimming Baths we used to go to once a week from Dialstone School. Not forgetting the Gas works behind St Mary's Parish Church (I was a choir boy there). As Nic A says Brilliant

I must have looked at nearly a hundred of these types of video's, over the years. I find them fascinating. I've lived in Stockport all my life. One shop I am very keen to see a proper shot of, is the old toy store, RILEYS, which was situated at the end of the precinct, just before you turn right into Great Underbank. I haven't come across one yet, accept for the one that shows a small portion of the shop front. It always seems to be just out of shot of all related photo's. Would love to see some, if any exist. Excellent videos Robert, thanks.

Re your comment on slum clearances. The strength of the communities was recognised. Multi storey blocks were built to house people living in squalid conditions whilst the land could be cleared to improve the housing stock. Many of the high rise buildings were designed to be put to commercial use later , mainly offices. Once the new houses were ready , built to 1960s standards , the communities could be reunited . To aid in this many of the public houses were retained . It was odd to see whole areas laid bare but the pubs still trading with their old customers 😂

No wonder some Tory politician in the 19th century once described Stockport as the most seditious town in the country!

I did these years ago mainly for my own use hence the taste in music. the ones i do nowadays tend to have just instrumental stuff only. as for naming all the pics it would take forever so i tend to ask for the time and i will tell you sorry its just easier
