I was wrong - this video could be improved and needs to be. I thought it explained what I understood well and so shared it widely on social media. It didn't take. I understand the maths and worried that it was a bit too simple, so people would think they were being talked down too. How wrong I was. The little feedback I got was that as soon as the equations hit the screen, most people just switched off. I advise removing the equations so that those who have the greatest need to understand keep watching.

Drew, that's a great video. The follow-on to this is the fact that in your last scenario the CO2 concentration levels off at 500 ppm. That's better than rising, but still unhealthy - we also need significant amounts of CO2 removal (CDR) in parallel to emissions reductions, with CDR ramping up to 10 to 20 Gt/y over the next 2 decades and remaining in operation for 5 to 10 decades thereafter to bring the CO2 concentration down closer to preindustrial levels - around 300 ppm. (I posted your video on our website too)

Excellent analogy & explanation. In the comments below Tom makes a very good point. We need to get to net zero emissions ASAP, with a low waterline in the bathtub rather than a high waterline! An addition might be to add marks on the bathtub wall indicating GtCO2 and equivalent average global temp. I think the concept of a carbon budget is helpful, if we assume no additional removal, then once we have emitted 10-12 years of CO2 (~420Gt) then we hit 1.5C! I learned that in Paris the delegates did not like the term 'carbon budget' but opted for the term 'net zero'. It is no good celebrating 'net zero' emissions sitting in a very full bathtub!

The bathtub is a useful analogy. However, this video overall is somewhat misleading in that we don't just want to stabilize CO2, we want to reduce it. Note that the graph shows stabilization at 500 PPM. That is way too high. Reduction of 80% by 2050 is not enough. Further, how much and how fast the reduction takes place has a big effect on the graph. If you are using the Climate Interactive modeling, I suggest you play with how much and how fast CO2 is reduced. I think you will see that reductions need to be hugely frontend loaded to get the kind of positive effects on GHG and global temperature needed.

Everything in nature tends to attend the state of equilibrium. The life of earth is possible due this equilibrium state of co2. More or less might lead to disaster so my point is normalisition reduction of CO2 is appreciated.
