I will hopefully have 20 each of the ETF's and 50 of each of the dividend stocks by the end of the year. Then in 2021, I'll start buying different stocks. What are the benefits of ETFs ? How do they make you money ?
@Dr.Dumpnpump
@Dr.Dumpnpump 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-ms3es1wn2u ETFs are a basket of stocks that you pay a fee for someone to manage for you (buy/sell). Buying individual stocks save you management fees and give you more control over that basket but it takes time and work to manage yourself. If you want to maximize and control your portfolio stocks are the way, but is higher risk if you don't do the work or research. I won't invest in ETFs because I feel the basket is highly overvalued right now.

Seeing as this is partially about beginners, I think another few criteria could be helpful. I would add "Simplicity", 'Understandability" and "Sleep Well At Night - SWAN". I know enough to know that I don't know enough to risk it all on something I really don't want to do for myself because so many are already much better at it than I will ever be and it doesn't thrill me to do it. So for me I guess that would favor ETFs and I can go work on my garden and forget about working up to an ulcer worrying about my next or last mistake. The School of Hard Knocks has a painful degree program. Keep up your good work I enjoy your videos.

Even with their flaws, ETFs are the way to go for the average person. They do the diversification for you, you don't have to do nearly as much research as compared to individual companies and the slow nature of them makes it easier to "invest and forget".

However, in these rare times when lots of EXCELLENT stocks are getting hammered...well, Jim Cramer seems to make a lot more sense when he says why buy all the losers in an index fund when you can just pick the winners?! I haven't seen anything in your videos that addresses that. (Unless you think Microsoft or Disney or Apple or Berkshire won't just assume their normal valuation when the world returns to normal).

when i was in my economics class, we played around with a "stock simulator"...our semester project was to build portfolios. We had a certain amount of money to start with and we could buy/sell whatever...whenever. The "variance" was values taken from some 50-year section of the stock market history and used to simulate a real stock market. I used both ETFs and individual growth and value stocks to outcompete the entire class. the only person who beat my portfolio was someone who got STUPID-lucky and put all his money in a single stock that HAPPENED to do something like 30x the first four weeks of the project. I came in second.

10K investment in an ETF like VOO makes out ~6K in 5 years (10% return and compound interest). So now a stock to beat this has to go up in value by approx. 75% in the same duration of time, which is about 5 years. Do not forget, that there is no compound interest in stocks and when you sell it, reduce 20% in tax (means also a loss of this tax money, which could be working hard for you if invested in compound interest like ETF). So bottom line for me, if I can sell a stock for twice as much in about 5 years, risk worth taking, otherwise, continue with ETF's. Plz correct me if I am wrong.

Hi Jimmy. I totally agree with you. I have a portfolio of over 70 of my favorite stocks that I have been holding for years and I'm beating the S&P500 quite easily. But I would like to add two points to why stocks are better than ETFs (for experienced investors). You mentioned that ETFs are mixed bags of winners and losers, which is undoubtedly true. The first issue I would add is allocations. When you buy an ETF you have no choice of how much each individual company constitutes of your portfolio. You're stuck with however the ETF weighs them. I would rather have a decision on proportions (i.e. my position of MSFT is 6 times bigger than my position of FB but I'm more convinced of its business model). My second issue is the entry point. ETFs give you much less flexibility on timing, unless the entire market dips... Which is the second aspect of being a mixed bag: of those at their peaks and those at their bottoms (i.e. I'm bullish on the S&P500 for next year, but I'm not sure right now is a good entry point for TSLA) Thanks for the video.

I agree with you...individual stock would prove to yield more gain with the factors of time+research+quantity+diversified selection. Truly a novice at considering this topic as well as challenging the benefits of ESPP because if you are your own boss, the employee thing is irrelevant. And while I have participated in ESPP's, I never truly depended on it because the transition of the 'workforce' is changing....I personally can not see myself working for any one company more than 7-10years. Anyways a continuum of study is needed for Stocks, ETF's, DSPP, DRIP, special gifts etc.... I see an ETF as a neutral investment because the good and ok are mixed. It would be a fluke if one particular ETF outperformed long term. Or, I may be still unlearned about the possibilities...?!

Thanks Jimmy great explanation like always. You always show how to investigate a company and do research. I have the same approach towards ETF's and I find this quite difficult. How do you properly value an ETF like you would for example with Apple? To me ETF's still look like a product and it is easier to understand and value a company than an ETF. What are the real risks with ETFs?

Some ETFs could be riskier than stocks. Such as leveraged ETFs

Hi Jimmy, huge fan here! Thank you for another informative video. I would love to know if your analysis changed on Boeing (BA). I watched and rewatched a great video you published on March 3rd. I had it on my watch list for a while and now with everything that's going on, I am afraid to touch it :). Stay safe!

I’m losing 22% on my etf index fund in a mixed portfolio right now don’t know if I should drop 500-1000 in to take advantage of any bull movement(s).

It seems kinda complicated being new to stocks. Let’s say I buy UCO $25, 20 stocks, and it rises up to $400. Would I then sell it for $400 times 20 stock???? Or does it not work that way in etf?

You failed to mention volitility holding individual stocks. Moat investors will panic if a single stock drops 40% or more. Not necessarily a index or ETF.

Do you have a video on comparable etfs? The ones that overlap enough so having both would be pointless?
