With so many untouched troops they could have destroyed d-day in its beginning or put even more pressure on Soviets which would killed them. Also they possible could have restarted north African front but allies alredy landed in Sicily so they probably have naval superiority. But Italy just ducking sits there..

A good amount of troops need to be placed in Italy bc if Germany loses Italy and has another front from Austria and Vichy France, it'll lead to the downfall of Germany. But I see where your coming from, some troops would be better placed in the west wall or against the soivets for a faster push
