Silent Hill isn't a power fantasy, but it's also not something like "Outlast" that is specifically trying to strip you of any sense of power. You do have some power, some ability to fight back. There is some catharsis to beat down monsters, and you feel like when you die it was your fault. People say the combat is one of the least important things about Silent Hill, but I feel like it is a very important part of the experience.
@LordQuadros3 жыл бұрын
Yo, this ^ While I still think Shattered Memories is generally the tightest package of the Western Silent Hills, I do find a lot of the tension is greatly hurt by having only to run away from enemy encounters, because it carries the tacit implication that there won't be anything you can't just run from.
@lovelygargoyle52483 жыл бұрын
What also backs this up; Homecoming. The combat was too good, it removed any sense of danger because they just gave you the best melee weapon to start with and so every encounter is slash-slash-slash-sidestep-repeat.
@WoobooRidesAgain3 жыл бұрын
"If you die, it was your fault." That's one of the things that drives me nuts about games like Outlast. They're scary, at first, but after the first few deaths, the game really becomes more an exercise in tedium as you try to work your way past an AI agent that you are at the complete mercy of. Which is fine when it works, but when it doesn't, it's the height of bullshit. Call me a scrub, but I much prefer to know that my death was due to a bad decision on my part, through bad resource management or underestimating the odds, rather than because I stood too close to a wall and the insta-kill invincible bad guy clipped through it to grab me.
@touchingisjustthefirststep3 жыл бұрын
There is no cartharsis.
@Meitti3 жыл бұрын
Its good to have it there solely because it also gives options to gameplay and therefore game design itself. Its not always reliable and sometimes (especially outside Otherworld) its just better to run away. When you enter a new area or a room, you dont know which is the better option yet. Also in case of Silent Hill games, radio+fighting makes these really creepy situations where you ready your weapon and wait for the monster to come out from the dark. Problem with "run away!"-games is those encounters have to be heavily scripted and zones to be more like sneaking puzzles, which can make encounters predictable and kill replayability. If there would be mods that would randomize enemy placements and numbers in old survival horror games, you could have ton of replayability. You can't really do that with games like Outlast without breaking the game.

The layout of these classrooms always confused me because my elementary school classes only had one door per room. Then I played Siren and was like "oh I guess this is how Japanese classrooms are designed." There's a cool sense of the uncanny that comes from Japanese developers making an American resort town.
@stevethepocket2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it's so there's a second exit in case of emergencies. The proper thing to do, of course, would be to have a door leading directly outside, but maybe in Japan the relevant safety code mandated retrofitting existing buildings as well, and this was the cheapest way to comply.

I'm pretty sure Resident Evil and Silent Hill have percentage based health bars that just aren't shown to you. So if you take one hit you'll still be green but at 80% Health near 70% it'll turn yellow and near 30% it'll turn red so it takes multiple hits by weak enemies to move you out of the color you are at currently. Health Items like herbs heal 30 percent and big health like Red+green or health kits cure 50% health or 80% depending on the game. Anyway, more than likely you're never at full health unless you are over healing.
