Best tip I can give is to ski your line at once, don't stop in the middle of it (obviously good planning beforehand is important). If you stop at every narrow, scetchy situation you'll never learn to react fast with the changing enviroment. And truss, those will come. After every turn, your next one should already been planned. That's a skill you'll develop when you get more used to skiing backcountry. Take an avy course, it's no joke. Be safe, have fun.

Bode Miller has some interesting views on the Raichle cabrio design in the Gear:30 podcast: blisterreview.com/podcasts/the-pros-gear-bode-miller-ep-163 Need to wait and see what K2 do with the cabrio boots now as Full Tilt stock is very hard to find since they're winding up the brand name. Suffice to say though, they aren't a silver bullet that is going to magically make you ski better (just like any other gear really). Bode liked them because the flex is directly forward, which didn't result in edge angle change as you drive deep into the boots flex. Also the design makes them easy to customise, and being able to swap out off the shelf tongues to control flex is nice. Don't fall for the Full Tilt marketing though, they don't magically make freestyle easier or you better at it. Also, Dalbello have similar cabrio designs, particularly the Il Moro models. The biggest thing with boots though is to get something that fits your specific foot, ideally with a performance fit (without pain, or incredibly excessive pressure....unless you are willing to make that trade-off for performance). Avoid heel lift, no sideways movement across the last, and ideally, all whilst maintaining blood circulation.

A lot of other videos I've seen suggest that the rotation should come in the legs, below the hip (eg. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYLRhJ-oj5urna8 and kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2KWqqCbnc6tj7s). I'm wondering if the "turning the hips" suggestion you gave is specific to powder, or if I should think about it as the leg rotation is causing hip rotation, but not upper body rotation, in all types of turning?

IMHO, short turns are harder and more technical than long turns. Doesn't make sense to me why we'd need to "just" learn them before learning long turns. Think: in a long turn you have a few seconds to get into a good stance to initiate a new turn. In a short turn, you have to do the same job in under a second.
