Stone Coat Ultimate Top Coat Training | Stone Coat Epoxy

For optimal adhesion please follow these instructions. This is a 4 step process when applying the Stone Coat Platinum.
Step 1: Use 1 ounce per square foot of Stone Coat Platinum as a wash coat aka undercoat. (Avoid using our epoxy undercoat with the Stone Coat Platinum, the water off-gassing may cause poor adhesion.) The wash coat will replace the undercoat when using our Platinum system. A wash coat is applied by tinting the Platinum with our dye then using a large popsicle stick or squeegee to spread a thin coat that's tinted to hide the color of the substrate. When coating over existing non-porous materials such as laminate, be sure to create visible scratches in the surface using mechanical sanding to promote adhesion. Bonding primer can also be applied but be sure the water has fully escaped prior to installing the Stone Coat Platinum. The purpose of a wash coat is to promote adhesion by pushing the coating into the substrate as well as adding an undertone color to hide the original color of the substrate.
Step 2: As soon as the wash coat is applied you can add the color coat. The color coat is the decorative process of applying our color additives including Dye, Metallic Powder, and Spray Paint. Mix 3 ounces per square foot of Platinum for this coat.
Step 3: The clear coat is applied the next day. Sand with 120 grit sanding discs using a random orbital sander. Wipe with xylene, then apply the clear coat. We mix 3 ounces per square foot of the Stone Coat Platinum for this coat. As we have continued testing adhesion in all climates and temperatures we advise this method of application. (As soon as the xylene is flashed or dry, pour the clear coat because the xylene is going to make the color coat sticky which will promote optimal adhesion)
Step 4: Apply the Ultimate top coat for extreme scratch resistance, a natural sheen, and ultimate durability. Follow the instructions for the Ultimate Top Coat.

Being a painter for some time now you get to know a couple of tricks. So when you're painting on a smooth surface you wanna flip your roller once you have applied the product over the whole area you are working on at that time with light to no pressure at all you let the weight of the roller do the work. I applied the Ultimate Top Coat to a cabinet I use as a feeding station for my cats. The top was scratched up from them jumping up and down all the time prior to coating with epoxy and top coat. I love the finish and durability, and it’s way easier to clean now! I don’t think anything could mess up this top coat. 👍

Great video watched the entire thing. I poured my first job for a customer today and I couldn't remember how to do the topcoat. I did my first pour for my mom's house 2 years ago and it's held up great and even though I was nervous about it I did it for one of my paying customers this week and they helped. Just finished my counter tops, what a job. Made some dumb mistakes, would do it over if I could, but that’s the name of the game. Started to set up faster than I thought it should. I’ve done three end tables before taken on the counter top. Would do it again, but with more help.

Hello Mitch , now you are 13 lol… He is so awesome. I did my countertop… I did not use stone cold epoxy ☹️I used a different brand, it was OK for end result but it was not OK for open time. The open time on this was only 40 minutes and that was not enough time especially when I was doing it by myself. I am watching this video because I am going to use the UTC and some people have had some trouble with it so I’m making sure that I watch your videos over and over and over so I do it like a pro! I hope I got this lol.

Most epoxies I use are 23 hr re coat window anything more then sand with 60 grit and no big deal. If your within the window, just apply next coat, nothing needed as far as prep. Thats what I have experienced. I use Spartacote by laticrete. You can use a polyaspartic to make it non yellowing and have all the durable properties…? Stay safe all, great video!!!!

They do... it's just out of stock alot. And isn't a high gloss like the regular epoxy. It's more like a semi gloss... but water it down a bit more than the instructions and it will be a bit more glossy

Just finished my second coat of the epoxy resin application clear with diamond dust… Love it however, about three hours in I went to take the tape off, stumbled and accidentally put my hand out of reaction to break my fall… I did the best I could to recover the imprint by adding some that I had left over and a trowel over it along with the heat gun. It looked much better however, there’s some imprint and unevenness that I could not get out…. please tell me what I can do to recover and repair this before I put the ultra topcoat on

Your demos are always in a workshop setting with a nice, flat board. However, I have an old kitchen with a laminate countertop that includes the 4" backsplash. What is your advice on covering this with UTC so the finish looks even and consistent with the horizontal surface? Is a paintbrush recommended? Also, can I go straight over the latex paint I used to colour the counter ? Thank you!

from my recent experience your only choice is to sand off all of the top coat or sand and polish it to a glass-like shine. If the top coat was thick enough you can sand and polish to a gloss finish without reapplying but any sanding marks or scalloping left in the first ultimate top coat will show thru a second top coat. :(

I don't think that you have to sand all the topcoat off, just sand with about a 200 grit to get the mechanical bond, and then apply another coat of the original resin to get that high gloss finish... at the customer's expense of course, if they changed their mind on what their original request was!
