Forgot to thank you. Followed your directions/video, and built a pretty nice looking mailbox. NO WAY would I have tried building one without your help. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was- “Don’t use a 30”x30” slab for the top unless you have at least two extra large mammal friends get it out of the truck and gently on to of your mailbox…. (Guessing 250-275 lbs)

I usually dont even put a flag on my mailboxes. The mailboxes usually have an outgoing mail slot that your mailcarrier will see when the open it.

This is the only video I could find for how I wanted to make my mailbox! I wish I had found it before I made a concrete base!!! I could have skipped that step. But everything else you did that's what I'll be doing lol. Thank you. Question can I use tile they use for a backsplash,

I'd use a base anyway. All that work i would hate to see it lean in a few years.

Doesn't it need a heavy deep foundation? So many people around here have leaning mailboxes because they were build without a foundation.

yes i have a 4 ft hole by 30 inches, filled with concrete for my foundaion. I will release a video on how to make the hole correctly, so that you wont get a lean

Great video! I was told that it's best to not have a hollow center and therefore to fill all those middle holes in the cinder blocks with dirt as it is getting built. I can't find videos of anyone doing this though. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks again for this video.

Why is a hollow center an issue? Never heard that yet. Makes sense plus its a good place to dump the dirt.

I usually keep mine hollow in case a car hits it will not do so much damage. If a car were to hit it will need to be rebuilt regardless

This type of mailbox is against USPS regulations and usually local and State laws. They are supposed to be breakaway. Approximately 100 people are killed in accident by this type of mailbox in the USA. A homeowner could be liable for death or injury.

Thanks for the comment, and I’m glad that this video helped you. I dug a 4 ft hole and filled it with concrete before I set the block. That step is very important and should not be skipped. Depth of the hole will vary depending on where the frost line is in your area. Although it may work, I wouldn’t recommend using backsplash tile on outside mailbox.

i live in MN and have had many suggestions.....the issues...heave hoe of frost, cold, snow, snow plows and Father Time. Advise please...is re bar something needed, how? I have slate Im working with. Who (what trade?) should I call on locally that will know what to do please? (Re-bar? I beams planted in the ground? Options? Your are very talented and great Artist!

@@missrose9164 I personally do not rebar my mailboxes in. The reason is that if a car where to hit it, rebar or not, it will still need to be rebuilt. Snow from plows, wont push it over, but you want it to be able to break away if a car were to hit it.

@@normanortega3439 thats what i do and all my mailboxes, going back 15 years are still perfectly straight up. I see alot of leaning mailboxes out there. This way it will insure a long lasting straigh up and down mailbox. I have some more mailbox builds where I show the digging process. I will release the videos as soon as I get some time.
