Back when that monument was carved into stone mountain, the area was heavily white. That whole part of the Atlanta suburbs underwent white flight in the 1980's-1990's.

@Samuel You're absolutely right, because I too use to live in Stone Mountain Ga 28 years ago, and yes the whole city was at one time to be a predominantly white neighborhood, even the late Zale Miller was at one time to be the city Mayor back then too.

@@suginomura southern Fulton, Southern Dekalb, and Southern Gwinnett County are mostly black suburban area now that is continuus with the south side of Atlanta. But tye side of Atlanta is gaining a trickle of new white residents but mostly growing again now with middle class black residential infill in beautiful new neighborhoods, while whites are growing again in much of southern Dekalb County and part of southern Fulton, spreading from central Dekalb and southeast Atlanta which already gentrified. This pattern is gradually making it's way towards Stone mountain but hasn't gotten there yet. But the area has been revitalizing in recent years.

@@suginomura as for the why, it's the standard story. There are multiple factors in reality and it's not as simple as individual racism though that's one part of the story. But so called white flight has been a very institutionally supported process from the federal government on down, with real estate and development interests making a huge amount of additional $ from it along the way. Now it has slowed down massively as far as white flight from blacks goes, nothing like it was just a decade or two ago. There was localized white flight from Hispanics in some places in earlier decades, but a more defuse but larger scale flight or attrition from areas of growing Hispanic or diverse immigrant population is curently underway in many parts of the US which began in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s. This too isn't only an individual thing but also has powerful institutional backers. It's also extremely controversial and can't consistently be talked about online without censorship unfortunately.

@@suginomura mostly just certain hot button political issues of the moment which varies and is hard to predict in my experience, but I have had comments/opinions on immigration disappear repeatedly, not on segregation per say though. It's all in the name of combating "disinformation". There are powerful coporate and ideological interests involved to mantain certain narratives on immigration and various other issues, not just one btw but conflicting ones that in combination ultimately sute their interests.

@@suginomura I have never herd of deku scrubs btw, -what the heck is that? But yes the area changed and was beginning to change back in the 90's though recently revitalization is quickly heading in that direction but isn't quite there yet to a large degree.

I find Atlanta area driver the most aggressive- tied with Baltimore/DC area. Ive traveled around a lot and I either go thru Atlanta at 3:00 AM or go around. I would say 8 out of 10 times I went thru before, I would see a fatal accident 😭 🙏 - BAD vibes on 75. Stay safe guys

People nowadays are in a rush to go no where. There is also a lot of more speeding going on since the start of the pandemic. That's why I always make sure to leave extra early for work so I wont have to speed.

@Oscar Guerra You know you are absolutely right, because I too use to live in Stone Mountain Ga 28 years ago when I was just a little boy, and not only was it less traffic back then, but most of all it was crime free at the time too. But now I currently reside in the city of Morrow Ga, which is in Clayton county, and have been living there for 25 years now.

I grew up there and been almost everywhere seen in this video. Lived at Ridge ave, then W. Mountain Street and finally Central drive. Used to go to school at Stone Mtn Elementary, Jr. High/Middle and High School, and my sister (RIP) was cremated at Wages and Sons Funeral Home on Main Street. I frequently spent a lot of time in the Village of Stone Mountain area from rollerblading around as a teen, buying yo-yos at a nearby toy store, hanging out at the library mainly to use the internet or look at some art books, grabbing some food at places like the Funnel cake emporium, The Village Burger and Weeyums. I am glad I moved out of that city. I've been there too long (21 years) and not much to look forward to in Stone Mountain. I have seen the city changed throughout the years (especially with businesses coming and going) and it is actually getting worst in my opinion. From my experience, it is not safe to walk around at night (got jumped and robbed twice) and drug activity going on at some spots when it is supposed be a quiet suburb. I was shocked when I started to see homeless people sleeping at the Marta bus stops years ago.

In addition to the poorer parts of the Atlanta suburbs, a lot of those broadly beautiful affluent areas in the Atlanta suburbs still have little (or sometimes not so little) pockets of low income or declining working/middle class neighborhoods VERY nearby, which are scattered all about. That's probably where most of the gang members live.

I grew up in Lithonia (Go Bulldogs!!!) as a youth. Moved in 1973. Went to Redan Elementary and LHS. Lot different then. Towns were mostly all white, now predominantly all black. Lived in apartments very near the Mountain park gate, used to walk down there a lot with my kids. Before it became a hi-rent park we use do jut drive around the mountain all the time. My friend had a '69 Charger and we would just fly around the area...ahhh, those good ol days. I would never move back there now with all the gangstas in the local areas...

You two don't get blackness. In Atlanta metro and some parts of Maryland/D.C., blacks CAN live in nice homes and be together in the same neighborhood, but due to zoning and the history of redlining, usually other things will not show up in the immediate areas surrounding those neighborhoods (it is no surprise Stone Mountain don't have much of a town center). Other than the park which is a tourist destination, there isn't too much in the way of amenities in Stone Mountain, because those only go to white areas because they have real wealth (like generational wealth which was largely built off of New Deal policies that excluded blacks) whereas black people might have decent incomes (there is a difference). Black people are basically a contagion to wealth (there is still a thing where property values of white neighborhoods fall once it has a certain low percentage of black people. It's messed up). You'd be shocked to find out that those nice homes you see might be underwater or have very little appreciation in value regardless of how well kept the neighborhood is. It's a sad truth that only policy(mainly reparations and/or another New Deal type of policy that includes most blacks) will fix. Either way, history is why you have seen so many instances of these nice Atlanta area black neighborhoods where as soon as you get out of the neighborhood, there are mainly only cornerstores and fastfood restaurants. And trust me, some of these people (especially blackn people) in Atlanta should be much more angry than what they are.

You are a very "aggressive" podcaster Mr. Jose'. And you shouldn't paint that beautiful neighborhood a "hood" just because you saw someone wearing a Tshirt that didn't appeal to you. Furthermore I seriously doubt any of those citizens would WANT you living in their neighborhood though I doubt you could afford it.
