Margaret Thatcher was still in power. Post miners strike, anyone northern and male was treat with a degree of suspicion or pity, even by a young, northern sounding, interviewer -as she sounds very comfortably middle class. Squire is relatively middle class as he studied at grammar school. Brown is trying to be cutely charming but she can't hide her, to my ears, middle classness (for a northerner) and it's like hearing a salt of the earth chimney sweep trying to cop off with a touchy feely, but spoken for, solicitor.

She isn't making it negative at all, if you read between the lines (as Ian and John have) the questions are very, very clever ... who wants to hear boring questions like you hear on chat shows ... the interviewer is asking real questions and the guys are giving real responses ... this was 1989 and when you look back to this interview .... everything she asked and everything they said came true :-)

I don't understand why this is considered such a bad interview. One) The interviewer does ask interesting if strange questions. They definitely aren't the usual kind. Two) Ian is actually quite considered and thoughtful not arrogant at all. He's actually warm and kind if you look at it. John looks a bit psycho but he's more taciturn.

You really need to put yourself back into the timeframe of 89/90 to fully get this. Around this time (in Toronto, Canada anyway) it seemed most televised music interviews consisted of hair metal bands or Vanilla Ice: both loud & obnoxious, which I suppose it made better TV but I really appreciated the Stone Roses quietly confident style - it had a huge impact on me…

This interview is very of its time, an antipathy towards ‘playing the game’. What isn’t of it’s time is Ian brown’s messianic self belief; it’s kind of beautiful. It’s not arrogance, it’s self belief and it’s dangerously inspirational.
