Stone Temple Pilots - Plush - Scott Weiland - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
The inspiration for the chord structure of “Plush” by Stone Temple Pilots, apparently came from bass player Robert DeLeo’s love of ragtime music.
What other songs can you think of that integrated very contrasting musical styles in their composition? Let me know in the comments!
I’m going to dive into Scott Weiland’s isolated vocals from “Plush” and I’ll talk about the different types of tones that he's using and how he got them.
I’ll also demonstrate how you can replicate that same sound by cutting back the air and adding a little distortion and we’ll practice it together so you can see how achievable taking on the tune is.
Also be sure to check out my version of the tune here:

@@kentamplin Thanks Ken, it would be really appreciated!!! The song "Hunger Strike" is amazing. Temple of the Dog was basically an early Grunge supergroup with Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell joined forces to create one album as a tribute to their late mutual friend and fellow musician Andrew Wood. After the band Temple of The Dog ended Chris Cornell left the group and all of the other members with Eddie Vedder formed Pearl Jam.

Brother, I'm still trying to find my voice, a voice that I can be satisfied with. I love the resources you have provided, they are a huge help. I know my range. I'm more of a tenor to an alto. It seems that I fit more than one genre in part, but not any one genre totally. So should I just pick one and just work with the range that I have? I can manage 2½ octaves on a good day, but I can manage my head voice longer than my chest voice. I find 8o's hair metal easier to sing than say grunge or new metal. Thanks again. 🙏🏼

I keep bugging you about Dirty Diana because the vocal performance was amazing! The bridge or lead up to the chorus as well as the chorus is why I feel that MJ would’ve sounded badass singing rock/hard-rock....the verse is awesome too, very dynamic.

Compare this to Brandon Boyd/Incubus, and you'll see exactly what he's describing about that Grunge Sound. They're STP's contemporaries, in the same era of music, who went the opposite direction vocally. Scott sang this waayyy better in the acoustic version, just a guitar, awesome stuff! This was the easy song that I warmed up too, when I had to get this sound down, so I could sing this type stuff... Thanks Ken!

I don't subscribe to the "born with it or not" philosophy on most things. Most people can learn some general competency at many things.
@nativeofnc

Try writing down the lyrics from memory....it will help cement them in your mind. Also, try being animated, using physical movement to cue you to the words....eg: if the line begins with "and I see", use your hands to make binoculars. Of course, you may not do that in a performance, but you will remember better.

Ken thank you so much for doing this isolated vocal on Scott. I genuinely loved this guys voice. My heart breaks that we lost another great artist to the monster of addiction. I saw him in concert at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem Pennsylvania Cheap Trick opened up for STP. Man it was an incredible show. Scotts voice was spot on. He was damn near perfect. I honestly was expecting a not so great performance because of his use of drugs but even though I could clearly see that he was stoned his performance was simply put amazingly pitch perfect and his tone was just so soothing. Thank you for doing these videos. These are the most interesting thing going on in the parlance of KZbin.

A brilliant analysis and comparison to George Thorogood. I love how you string together these comparisons that no one else would think of! I would love if you could get the isolated vocals for STP's "Sour Girl" as well...in his later material, I felt that Scott sounded more sensitive, got further away from the stereotypical "ERRR"-sounding grunge vocals and found more of his natural, authentic voice. On a side note, it would be great to hear isolated vocals of Steve Nicks!

Glad to see you hitting up some STP Ken :). While I agree that this song doesn't have a whole lot of Vocal Range, there certainly were STP songs that did have Scott extending himself. A song like Sour Girl springs to mind. There is an acoustic version of Plush on STP 2003 'Thank You' Best of Release, that he certainly extends on. From memory there was an acoustic version of Sour Girl, on the CD Single of that song also. He certainly put a lot more into the Songs live. I've got about 35 min from a show at Festival Hall, Melbourne Australia from 2011 that is just brilliant. It's on my KZbin channel if anyone is interested. Only 4 things on my Channel, 2 STP clips and 2 clips from a solo show Jeff Martin, from The Tea Party did in a backyard in Feb 2020 in my home town.

This is one or if not my favorite channel that I subscribe to. You have so much knowledge in your vocal ability you only have nice things to say we need that right now. It’s all about inspiring each other being kind to each other. The important thing is to see and encourage potential. I think you have a unique way of doing that bringing out the best in people. Love the shirt.👍

I would love to see an isolated vocal analysis of "You're the Voice" by John Farnham. I've always considered that one of the best studio vocal performances in pop rock - a great example not only of vocal range, but also mastery of vibrato, wonderfully smooth transitions to falsetto, and the right amount of gravel at just the right spots. It would be fascinating to hear it isolated and broken down by someone knowledgeable like you.

One of my favorite song and voice tone. Just love to hear vocal distortion. I think it is not attainable but sir Ken duplicates it on the spot, it is attainable, indeed!. Love this series especially if it focuses on the vocal style. Gotta follow you sir Ken to practice it in chunks. I'm waiting for the Pearl Jam (the father of modern sound) episode in this series. Thanks so much sir Ken. And like the collection of shirts. Killer design.!

Range isn't everything! Often a high range is more striking but often hides technical deficiencies! Scott was a chameleon with his own voice, despite not having a spatial range. His talent is evident in every song of him, always sung in a different way and with melodies totally unrelated to the music (bass and guitar). Just listen to Slither by Velvet Revolver or even "Grand Applause" by Art Of Anarchy!

You are right, he wasn't the guy with the most range but he was so versatile in his style and so creative it's not even fair. The lyrics be wrote are amazing considering he wasn't too worried with the actual meaning but he was actually trying to find words that sounded right. I used to idolize Layne and Chris, I still love those guys, but as I grew up I actually believe now Scott is the GOAT and he wasn't even grunge. Eddie is not even in the same category IMO with all due respect to him. Scott did had an amazing career and he and the rest of the band were always pushing it when it came to their sound, always doing something new. Also, Plush acoustic is an amazing song too.
