It was in the spring of 1992 STP would relocate to the san fernando valley with producer Brendan o’ brien who had already worked with the black crowes, chili peppers and pearl jam. Drummer Eric Kretz would recall the energy the band brought to the recording of their debut record telling Songfacts
There was enthusiasm and excitement and everyone was in the room and participating creatively, artistically,"It's the most fun time to be in a band when everyone has the same ideas and everyone has the same goals. Core would be recorded in just three weeks.
Once the band was about to submit the album to their label, they soon discovered an old Chicago blues musician already had the name mighty joe young. The musician had been putting out albums since the 70’s on a local indie label, went on hiatus and decided to come back. So the band, had to come up with a new name.. It would be a car lubricant called STP Oil Treatment that inspired Mighty Joe Young’s new name. Weiland had a fascination with it since he was a kid.. Scott suggested the band come up with a new name using the letters STP. One early name they had was Shirley Temple’s Private (they had a more lude term for the letter P than what I’m saying, but i’ll leave it to your imagineation). They eventually went with Stone Temple Pilots.
Core would be released in September of 1992, during the peak of the grunge movement. The album’s first single Sex Type Thing, was a massive hit on MTV, first landing on the network’s buzz bin program, which featured up and coming bands and songs. It soon was played amongst groups like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. The song, while embraced by MTV, got a good amount of attention on alternative radio peaking at number 23, but modern rock radio didn’t really embrace it. Dean would admit the riff for sex type thing was inspired by the Led Zeppelin tune in the light. The song garnered a lot of controversy, While the band were adamant in the press that they were pro-women, the media took one look at the lyrics and made up their own minds. If you read any press interview with the band during the promotion for Core, Sex Type THing’s meaning comes up again and again. For Scott, the irony of the song was lost on everyone. Here’s the frontman explaining to mtv what the lyrics were about.
It would be the album’s second single, Plush that catapulted Stone Temple Pilots into the stratosphere. Plush topped the mainstream rock chart and alo appeared on the pop charts peaking at number 18. Any of you guys remember the Grand Theft Auto San Andreas radio station radio X? The song was written by Robert in 1989 with him telling Rolling Stone “And when I played it for Scott,”, “he didn’t like it. He said, ‘It sounds too much like Boston.'” Kind of funny, considering the song was often compared to sounding like a pearl jam song. Even at live shows, Scott jokingly introduced the song to audiences as being a song Pearl Jam wrote for them.
Plush’s popularity only increased when the band performed an acoustic version for MTV’s Headbangers Ball program. That performance almost never happened because of a feud between MTV and STP. I’ll talk a little later about that. Plush’s lyrics were loosely inspired by a story the members read about a young woman from San Diego who went missing and was later discovered to be have been murdered. Scott would also reveal on VH1’s story tellers that the song’s lyrics deal with a lost obsessive relationship.
One of my personal favourites off the album, would be the third single Wicked Garden, would peak at number 11 on the mainstream rock chart. And the album’s final single the melancholy tune Creep would peak at number 2 on the charts and would deal with alienation. I always remember the movie Black Hawk Down when Grimes finds out he is about to head out on the now infamous Oct 3rd raid. There were even a few songs including Dead and Bloated and Crackerman that were released as promotional singles, but they enver. I worked for Scott & the Wildabouts for three or so tours a year before his passing as their production manager and monitor engineer. Scott was: Enigmatic. Stubborn. Relentless. Engaged. Disengaged. Hard. Soft. Delightful. Brutal. Brilliant. Stupid. Tough. Easy. Talented. Confused. Hospitable. Funny. High. A total ROCKSTAR. As time went on, I felt I was watching the ultimate Faustian dream playing right before my eyes, where a talented man with more charisma in his little finger than most, lost out to his demons due to a disastrous deal with the devil. Weiland no doubt was one of the most electrifying front mans ever. When you see pics of him over the years, its almost a different person is there. When he went low, it was a huge low. I felt so bad cause im an addict myself, so i knew he was one of those cases you knew it wasn't gonna end well, and at the same time there was absolutely nothing anybody could of done to stop it. Ir was gonna happen, it was just a matter of when. Some addicts, such a small fraction, actually succeed in going and staying sober. I was one of those few and been sober 13 years, and there is no way I'm gonna drink/drug again. Just knowing i have mended so many relationships that i once destroyed, there is no way I'm ever gonna even think about ruining that again.

STP has been "my" band going back to first seeing those Sam Goody commercials for Core back in High School in '92. I've read probably every STP book, heard every story, etc. And even with 30 years of fandom for Scott and STP, I can say that you did a great job with this video digging up a lot of the small nuggets and weaving them into STP history. I remember buying Core and hearing Dead & Bloated for the first time as that song permeated my DNA, and then having the same feeling years later with Meat Plow and other great tracks from this band. I saw 3 STP concerts in the late 90's and 2000. The last concert was at The Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, which is a tiny general admission venue. I'll never forget when Scott hit the stage with a gas mask and megaphone. The place went insane. These guys were so talented and Scott was a force of nature. Scott was one of a kind, RIP. I enjoy reading all the comments showing love to STP.

Scott sat in with us one night in St. Louis while they were on the Megadeth tour. We played a lot of Cheap Trick songs and generally had a great time. He graciously invited us to the hospitality tent at the local ampitheatre the next time they came through, this time headlining. He was a quiet guy, super nice. We were all very saddened by his passing.

STP were unfairly seen as a 2nd rate Nirvana by some music critics but I actually prefered them to Nirvana. Plush was so good as was some of their later stuff like Days of the Week. Scott was a great lyricist too.

It was more Pearl Jam (than Nirvana), that STP were accused of imitating. I remember kids in my school calling them “clone temple pilots” mainly because of Scott’s deeper singing voice on their first single Plush, which honestly did have a Vedder --ish sound to the vocals. But the instrumentation on plush, the rest of the songs on that album (Core), and the next few albums that followed more than proved that they were a great band with their own unique sound. definitely one of the best bands of the 90s. Even their last album that they put out before Weiland passed had some great stuff on it.

@@wtclifford I am in the UK where the music press here were terrified of American music completely taking over, the London press are vile and very xenophobic. Our music scene was dead, just full of really bad dance bands, the U.S grunge bands were like a breath of fresh air, but I do remember the UK music press trying to say they sounded like Nirvana-lite which I never agreed with at all. I actually remember when Vaseline came out they were very sarcastic and said "oh a song by STP that doesn't sound like Nirvana" and it drove me mad!

Even now they try to put grunge down and make out Brit Pop was far better when Brit Pop was just Beatles and Kinks rip off bands. I think they were unique and should have got more praise. I first saw STP before Core was released on the Megadeth tour and I’m shocked to hear that the audiences were unreceptive because we were blown away by it. Had never heard of them and woke up first thing in the morning to speed to Streetside Records to pick up a record and was devastated to learn that it hadn’t been released yet. It was a crazy good show and I didn’t miss a single show after that. Not one. And Velvet Revolver, too. God I miss those guys. Such amazing live shows and music.

I was in high school from 92-96.....I hate that I was so engrossed into Hip Hop and R&B that I missed all of the rock stuff. I remember classmates talking about all these bands, but it wasn't until I was an adult that I went back and dug into what I missed then. The 90s truly was a golden era for music in the U.S.

I remember sneaking my girlfriends In through my bedroom window late at night MTV on and for some reason, the songs plush or interstate love song would always come on, and it would light the room up with purple blueish pinkish lights. Great time to be a young teenager. I loved their early music, but my favorite album ended up being tiny music from the Vatican gift shop, the 1996 album.

I remember when I saw them on the tour for No.4, it was a phenomenal show. They had a drape set up covering the stage and when the show kicked off Scott had the megaphone doing the opening of dead and bloated and when the heavy riff hit, the curtain dropped and we were off to the races. It’s hard to believe almost a decade after it first was released, dead and bloated was still one of the best set opening songs ever. Besides the drama with the start though, the show was stripped down with no lights show/spectacles really just raw live music and it was awesome.

When it came to hard rock of the early 90s, these guys were really at the top of their game, propelling their edge to a different level. The DeLeo brothers were such a force of a tandem on guitar, putting out one bad ass, menacing riff after another, particularly on STPs first couple of albums. And Scott Weiland had that unmistakable voice that carried perfectly with Robert’s backing vocals. Although regrettably, I never did see them in concert. But I did manage to see Velvet Revolver at the ‘05 Oz Fest, right before Black Sabbath took the stage. It’s really sad what happened to Scott as addiction is such an enormous beast to conquer. May he RIP.

We came back from Desert Storm, and within that year, music shifted from heavy metal to grunge. I remmeber being at a record store in Tacoma and they introduced "the big three" Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains. It must of been right after Core was released. Man, that was a great time for music. Pearl Jam, Soungarden, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains dominated. It was the beginning of the end of music as we knew it.

I wasn’t really into metal or even rock music growing up but as I got into my twenties and I heard Scott’s voice and read his lyrics it became really hard not to love every STP album. He had a way of sharing his pain through his music exactly like every talented artist has and it totally broke my heart to hear of his death. The really talented musicians are always tortured. The name change was one of the biggest reasons they were considered a label plant, STP literally didn't exist and then all of a sudden there's this unknown band signed to a major label. I remember no one, NO ONE, ever mentioned this. I was big into grunge and rock and read everything I could get my hands on and I never knew about Might Joe Young and the years they spent building their reputation. Even Vedder said he never heard of them, no shit mate, STP didn't exist but I bet, 100%, that he saw MJY at some point in the day. They were a great band, something different to the 'Seattle sound', one of the classic 90's LA sounding bands like Jane's Addiction as opposed to Nirvana.

STP is my favorite band from the 90's. It became obvious that Scott was not going to outrun his drug problem. I so wanted to see them live and got tickets for the October 10, 2000 show in St. Paul but could not attend as I went into labor with my third child 6 weeks early. I saw Velvet Revolver with Alice in Chains opening, an awesome show, but still regretted I missed STP. So when they reunited in 2008 and went on tour, announced a stop back in St. Paul, I took the day off of work to get tickets. It was a good show, but you could see the toll drugs had on Scott. I knew afterwards I would never see him at a STP show again. It is ironic he died in a tour bus outside the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN just miles away from St. Paul. I saw STP one more time with their new front man Jeff Gutt in 2018. The band was good as ever, but still miss Scott.

I tried to hate these guys and couldn't. For my money, these, guys were 10x the band Nirvana and Pearl Jam were. They embraced Rock n Roll, when all of their peers were pretending to shun it. They left behind some timeless, incredible music.

I was a BIG BIG fan from the get go in early 1992… I never really considered them “grunge” they sorta had their own vibe. Epic band only regret never seeing them live.

I went to see STP recently with Jeff Gutt on vocals when they came to Costa Rica and the show was really really good. They mostly played songs off Core, Purple and Tiny Music, which is a shame since their record from 2018 has some good rockers in it. Their last album is very good too, if you enjoy acoustic mellow music.

Core came out while was in high school. A kid sitting next to me was singing Dead and Bloated and I was like "WTF are you singing" and I haven't looked back. I just ordered Purple on vinyl after watching this. Great video.

I saw STP when Core came out. They opened for Megadeth and the entire show was fantastic. The only show I saw that topped it was Ozzy/Alice in Chains/Motorhead.

i love when musicians wait until after the record is finished to go to rehab. Richard Patrick of Filter waited until after they finished Title of Record to go to rehab and that album is fuckin killer. RIP to Scott. super sad story. i've been clean from H. and all other hard drugs for 10 and a half years, myself

Back in 1989 or 90, when they were still called Mighty Joe Young, and I was 19 or 20 years old I used to crash their rehearsals, sit on the ground in a very small practice room at Trojan Studios in Garden Grove (recently known as Backline Studios,), and drum on the carpet along with them practicing. They didn’t seem to mind, and I gave them lots of compliments. telling them that I know that they’re going to be famous. And that they sounded so amazingly tight and have such great feel. They were by far the best sounding rock band I ever experienced. And I’m pretty sure nothing was going through the PA but vocals. I’m not saying they welcomed me with open arms and smiles, but they seemed to tolerated me and let me hang around. One of the greatest experiences ever!Extremely inspiring! I ended up singing most of their big songs in my cover band all throughout the 90s and early 2000s, playing gigs in Hawaii, Alaska, and all over Orange County, California.

I use to listen to all those bands! The 90s was my decade! The 90s was the best 10years for music! And for me! I had everything in the 90s! The best jobs the best women! I had money to spend! The best friends, the best vacations! The best apartment! Everything was great in the 90s! I went to the both woodstocks! I saw all the best bands live! I knew once 2000s came! Pretty accurate. There's a few things that are slightly off like the STP thing, That wasnt Scott's idea. I grew up with Dean & Bobby in New Jersey and when we used to to hang out in the early 80's getting high listening to music Dean would always talk about if he ever made it big, the name of his band would be STP because he loved the Graphic of the sticker. We actually had an STP sticker on our cassette deck and every time someone put in a shitty tape, Dean would say "pour some STP into that fucking thing for Christ sake"

Great video. 43-year-old metal-head now but back in the early 90’s I was more into the hip-hop and dance music of the time. I liked rock music but it was stuff like the Black Album and Use Your Illusion. Didn’t much care for the grunge bands back then. But the first time I heard Interstate Love Song, I swear it touched my soul. The catchy hook and massive guitar tone just sucked me in and set me on the path to loving Hard Rock and Metal ever since and I will never look back. So glad I finally got to see these guys when they reunited in 2008. I will always remember that show. I don’t listen to them as much anymore but STP changed my life and they will always have a special place in my heart ❤.

I am a huge STP fan. I've seen them play 4 or 5 times. The last time was right when he relapsed for the last time. Sadly it was one of his best performances. Some front men just aren't the same sober.

One of my favorite bands and they could have been as big as Zeppelin. Fantastic in concert when I saw them in 97. And I honestly never gave Robert the credit he deserved until I realized he'd written most of the songs I love. They ended IMO on Shangri La Dee Da which to me is Scott's strongest album vocally and melodically.

Rick Beato’s interview with Robert DeLeo was really good and I recommend it. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the band and he went into the whole backstory behind each song, not just the bass parts although that was there as well. I guess I never realized how good this guy is and how integral he was in terms of songwriting within the band including all the disparate influences he draws from, but also how collaborative the band chemistry was.

For sure! I detest that idea of geographic segregation when these songs are clearly written with heart and soul. Of course they took inspiration from grunge. Grunge was new and it was fucking awesome! I’m inspired by grunge & im inspired by STP! To hell with those ‘time, place, and manner’ restrictions that were thrust upon them. The music speaks for itself and it stands on its own merit to this day. I would almost describe the STP sound as ”Velvety” And not for the relation with VR lol

I remember the first time I saw STP they were playing the 3rd stage at lollapalooza which was literally them playing on pallets in the middle of a field to ten people. It was the first time that we ever heard the "Core" album and Weiland was singing through a bullhorn. Immediately we knew STP were going to be huge, then I finished my hotdog and hit the main stage.
