This is absolutely fascinating. Some of these conversations and faces I can remember like they were yesterday. One thing missing from the copper reading out the terms and conditions of attendance at Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice is the final line, presumably missed out in the final cut due to it making it all too obvious that we stood zero chance of getting anywhere near the stone circle: "And finally, the group currently camped at Hanging Langford will not be permitted to attend," a statement met with hoots of derision. It is also worth pointing out that the arrangements made and so carefully read out to us would have needed the sun to obligingly rise three times that morning, a joke that caused incredulous laughter around the camp for the rest of the day. No wonder we burned the notices. Another thing I remember is that, as in the case of the girl in the car who asked the copper where he was going for his holidays before saying they had ruined hers, these people were admonished by many of the pagans because they weren't portraying a serious image in their efforts to claim restriction of religious practice. The young chap who took on the role of chief negotiator with the police and played a very prominent part in every site meeting at Hanging Langford, found himself suddenly harassed, bullied and shouted down when he tried to perform the same role at our post-Solstice camp at King's Somborne. There was a group of travellers already in situ called The Deviants and they weren't too happy with somebody arriving from Hanging Langford and trying to tell them what to do. I actually felt sorry for him as he had done a splendid job at The Langfords, not that it did us any good as we were led a merry dance by the police and arrested for obstructing the highway, a highway we couldn't unobstruct because the police were obstructing it for us. It really was ridiculous, but in many ways one of the most life-defining weeks of my existence.

I was there too - you can see me briefly on the video - it's great that the BBC were filming, but I know that it's disingenuous, because it wasn't all of the whole confrontation and the aftermath, where we were all lied to and, I believe, illegally detained. I'm glad that they did show people being taken into court at Salisbury...in front of a strange crowd, some of whom were unexpectedly sympathetic. At least they got the numbers of people arrested roughly right - my own estimate was 275, unlike most of the papers at the time - The Guardian was the most accurate, while The Times was the least.

I remember when the police charged the crowd. We had walked from one of the surrounding woodland copses where thousands were camped. Not far from Stonehenge the police gave out leaflets warning the crowd not to proceed. Everyone crumpled them up and threw them back at the police. The tension was mounting and the crowd was becoming agitated at large police presence surrounding the stones. Just before the police cut the barbed wire to charge a young hippy anarchist climbed one of the bluestones carrying a wolf hair pendant and shouted to the amazed crowd FREEDOM X 3. The whole thing was like close encounters of the 3rd kind. Helicopters n all. I walked there from Salisbury yesterday. Went to their extortionate cafe. They've made the roads too dangerous to walk on, no pavements. And all the copses and woodland are surrounded by barbedwire. Another great tradition of our culture, the gathering of the tribes, supercede by greed and commercialism.

Got told to get out the field with the keystone in or riot squad were coming in at the same time riot squad blocked the only exit. Walked in on the morning. Big eye opener for me at the time. I was there and and ended up in the cells in Stroud before being bused to court in Swindon the following morning before being bailed to get out of Wiltshire. Year before I did the march to Glastonbury after Stoney Cross. (one of the best times of my life). Not entirely sure about the years though, I'm getting old.

What it does not show is that the 'bobbies' were then replaced by stormtroopers. We were buzzed low by a helicopter which ordered everyone to disperse. The 'force' charged, they had cavalry on the flanks. people running scared, falling, screaming, chaos. Eventually we walked back the to the site. Everyone was trying to chill out after all the adrenaline of such scary shit. About an hour later we were buzzed by the copter announcing 'you have 2 hours to leave the site. anyone remaining will be arrested any vehicles will be impounded'. People left. A Lot of people had driven through the night. Everyone had walked at least several (7?) miles to the stones spent however long there and walked the same back. They should not have been made to drive. Those romans are crazy

Is this your 'version' of what happened at Stonehenge in 1986 Alan Lodge? There were several hundred people at Stonehenge on the Morning of Summer Solstice 1986, there was also a large 'presence' of Blue Uniformed 'Troops' with no 'numbers', armed with truncheons and riot sheilds. We were stood peaceably outside the Stone Circle, behind the fence, whilst the Armed Thugs were inside the Stone Circle. For some unknown reason they were given the order to 'Charge' and that's what they did! They laid into people with truncheons that were just standing peacably, I for one was injured and as luck would have it, the Druids allowed me to go with them into the Stone Circle, ( they weren't being battered and arrested for being peaceful.)

Never understood all this "obstructing the highway" bollocks. The police themselves were obstructing the highway by parking lorry's across the road, so in theory you could have performed a citizens arrest on the police themselves for obstructing the highway. Whatever, it was all a load of cobblers, they had the might if not the right.
@MikeGreenwood51

Refusing to vacate the location after having been warned to do so 6:22 is, or may be called 'obstruction'. You could be sat in the middle of a football feild allowing enough room for a heard of elephants (not many in England) to pass either side. But if warned to vacate or not be there at or after 2PM or you may be arrested for obstruction. Then requardless of the fact there is enough room for a heard of elephants to pass either side. The policeman may arrest for obstruction. The obstruction is the obstruction of his duty to move the person away.

Yeah! I've seen it now - 'cos you can see me straining to hear what Inspector Evans (yes, I will name him) was saying - I'm assuming he's the one in the middle, as I was later accused of obstructing him...how so? This charge, and the one of obstructing the PC who arrested me (hello PC Morse - now I feel that I can say that too...when do you think that you were going to become an Inspector?) were bullshit, as they dropped those charges in court - only going with "Obstructing the Road". They all know that we were off to go and do what he decreed...in groups of 2 - 3 and go to (an apparently OK field in Berwick St. James, where Hawkwind were prepared to play). If all of us could have done that, with Hawkwind's help...I think things might have been a bit cheaper for the taxpayer and better for everyone all round. @@MikeGreenwood51

They had the rural compound, because the time before, they impounded a load of them in the County police HQ. Not realizing they could not stop them living there. funny as you like, going there to score a draw! GREAT DAYS!!!!!!

Which is why I boycotted going there last year...total joke, even if a very earnest man subsequently told me that the rules were for security reasons, since it's a "religious monument" and thus might attract extremists (!)...these days, maybe there are much better, quieter places to go... @@muddyfunster1323

I remember the peace convey well, it's hilarious really the way the authorities came down so hard - it really was a-lot of middle class (and often upper class) kids and old hippies, not causing much harm really. What the establishment didn’t cotton onto is these kids grow out of it, the majority anyway. The battle of the bean-field was utterly disgusting, but i also remember the 1980 Stonehenge festival were Crass and Poison Girls were set to play so lots of punks showed up too and bikers decided to viscously batter all the young punks they could, using bottles and chains turning it into a brawl. At this stage there was also an element we called the Brew Crew, complete dickheads off their nuts on special brew that just caused havoc - stealing, fighting and messing with the other travellers primarily. At this point I could see the end coming, the police were a big part of it but soo too were a lot of idiots who ruined it on the traveller side. its weird because when i see the police not lifting a finger against extinction rebellion and things like not lifting a finger when my car got nicked, i can’t see they have the numbers these days . Maybe the peace convoy should start again and see what happens ..? The thing is, imagine if this was all the police had to deal with now, it seems quaint. I had had enough by 87, but then the acid house and rave scene started which was fantastic, but again the death of that was Castle Morton - you have to be wise, i thought at the time what is the point of doing it this big? Its going to be the end of it - and it was …

In the late 70s and into the 80s under Thatcher there was austerity big time no jobs rent was high a lot of people were squatting and some chose to live on the road it was cheaper to buy an old bus or ex military vehicle festivals would be the place to meet everyone and every year stonehenge was the main gathering around solstice to party and celebrate life with the rising sun, I lived on the road from 1982 to 1994,great times and great people.

@@nervesinapattern7261 check out 85 battle of the beanfield, there you will see proper travellers not weekend hippies. Then jump to Castlemoreton 91 , we outgrew ourselves on too small an island . Britain was frightened at what we were becoming, then 94s CJB. That ended it. Then legal festivals sprang up everywhere, phoenix , ect where the system made a lot of money out of what we were doing for free. That's my take on it . I lived like this till 02, age 32. It was a hard habit to put to bed.
