I think Jinyoung is proof that genres like Trot have more potential for international popularity than industry insiders realize, Trot specifically has some elements that feel nostalgic for western audiences (for me I think some instrumental choices and the “high melodrama” for lack of a better term). I know plenty of the “Soap Operas and red wine” women who would LOVE this. If more countries could take that risk and try promoting their traditional music genres over their version of pop the new products coming out of that would be fascinating. Speaking more traditionally, Lim Kim’s latest album uses instruments and singing techniques of Korean Shamanism/Muism and it’s SO COOL. Kpop is cool and all but it’s Korean culture through an Americanized lens, it’s like it’s been filtered to be more palatable for our consumption. I’d love to see artists around the world reclaim the aspects of their culture that we never even hear about from an outside perspective.
