This video goes over how to train your dog to stop barking at the door.
This video tutorial is for dogs who are friendly towards visitors coming into the house but bark at the door. If your dog is fearful or aggressive towards strangers, DON'T do the exercises regarding people coming in your house, as this could actually send your dog over his threshold and make the problems worse. For more information on training dogs that are fearful or aggressive towards people and dogs:
Check out the free videos on this subject on my website at:
dogmantics.com/...
------------------------------
Please, if you make your own dog training tutorials on youtube and use my ideas to base your videos on, please give me credit on my techniques.
Stop barking at the door training tips: Use the most reinforcing treats possible. For example, real meat. If you use low value treats, the training will not be as effective.
It's better to nip the problem in the bud with 2 weeks of 1-3 minute training sessions every day and then touch up lessons, rather than fooling around every once in a while when your dog starts to get on your nerves.
Prevent your dog from seeing and hearing the triggers outside of training sessions during the training process.
Figure out how to "Change the picture" to prevent your dog barking.
1 Meet guests outside with your dog on leash at a distance
2 Have your dog in a crate in another room with music on if you do not wish to work with your dog when guests come over.
3 Put a note on your door saying not to knock and instead call you.
4 You can be ready with treats and your dog on leash further away from the door for when the guest comes in.
If your dog barks:
1 Go back a step and set your dog up for success
2 Put less time between the trigger and feeding the treat
3 Stop and try again when your dog is more relaxed
Thank you for watching!

Dog Training by Kikopup , good morning! Can you recommend which video to use for this situation? A friend comes over four days a week to take my four street rescue dogs, two at a time, for a walk in a grassy park. They all sense when he is near and go wild with joy. I have to put one on his transporter, the other I. The same room with the door closed and the remaining two bark and wiggle like crazy. The littlest one is the worst, she gets excited, jumps on one of the other dogs to excite her further. I Ray to eat them to wait on the patio and it has not worked so far. Please help! Thank you.

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games kzbin.infoUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

I've been sampling various dog trainers on KZbin and I have come to the conclusion that Emily's videos are technically the best. She structures the videos so well with explicit instructions, but unlike many other trainers, she also actually explains the logic and rationale behind the methods. So instead of just relying on step-by-step instructions to train specific behaviours, she also teaches in a way that viewers can learn the building blocks necessary to train other behaviours. She is a great ambassador of positive training methods. Does Emily have a book or a patreon account? I want to support her production of these KZbin videos.

Yes :) Its also embarrassing if you have neighbors. My clients in apartments tend to get a little embarrassed when we do the "fake greetings" and some neighbor comes up the stairs and sees us, knocking and ringing.

This video is absolute gold. I feel like this gives me and my dog real hope. He goes absolutely berserk (fearful aggressive / reactive) at anyone coming near or into our house. I've been looking and looking online for help with this problem, and your explanation is by far the best I've ever seen. My dog is fearful reactive though, so I think it's going to be harder than if he were happy excited reactive. But luckily he's extremely food motivated, so there's still definitely hope. Thank you sooooo much for this video, I'll probably be watching it several times over the next few weeks. I know this won't be a quick fix (he's been practicing this behavior for years now), but this is so clear-cut and easy to follow, I know we'll make lots of progress.

Hi Emily, oh for the perfect household. I work at home so have clients come into the back area through a side gate (4 a day). My son's workshop is around the back and because of dogs being in there is a notice on the door to shout at the gate if no answer when the doorbell is used. We have an average of 4 callers for my son during the day or evening and about 4 to 5 deliveries for his work with different delivery firms and drivers. Bobby barks at all the triggers and it is impossible to prevent this enough times for the training to succeed. He used to be really scared of traffic and although he does not bark at the gate when cars pull in he does when the driver returns to the vehicle. I have done loads of feeding him at the gate when people leave but my son does not have the time to go out with everyone so he still gets the chance to bark if he happens to be in the yard when people leave. The video is great and will help some clients.

If you have other dogs that bark, record them barking, and then work on them not barking when they hear the recording of the barking. Im not sure if your dogs will want to bark at a recording, but a surprising number of clients dogs, just can't contain themselves, and the recording has to be played very softly at first. The awesome thing is that I did work on that with my Border Collie, so whenever another dog barks she NEVER barks.

emko333 If the dog is already not caring about the barking, you did a good job, and the next step is feeding your dog for real dogs barking. An easy solution is to walk in a neighborhood where the dogs are behind fences and you can create distance from them. But remember, dont just hang out and stress the other dogs out, its not fair on them. A lot of dogs sensitize to their neighbors dogs, so its better to first start out in a neutral neighborhood where your dog doesnt know the other dogs who are barking, then go back to the place where the other dogs he has sensitized to live (this is just for anyone who has that issue, i am not sure if that is your issue)

thanks i found a trick i just put them in a different room so they don't see where the sound is coming from now the recording does cause them to react so i play 1 second then treat and repeat i will practice this until they can listen to the barking for minutes then i will try outside. Outside he wont bark unless i walk him to close to a barking dog, even people that move fast towards us, i did some training for that where i backed away to the point he would still listen and treat him for looking towards the dog. In backyard this worked very good for the quite neighbour dog now he doesnt start barking at it but the other neighbour dog barks a lot and im still trying to teach him to not to respond. your vidoes are very helpful thanks alot

👍🏼 this video is one of my favorite on the topic. However... 🤞🏼 I am hopeful to get some one on one customized advice of a similar nature. It is NOT possible to avoid all or even most of the triggering situations in our living situation. My service animal in training and I live in an RV. This is the best we can manage with our current financial circumstance. We managed by relocating every 24 hours to avoid being asked “go away and don’t come back”. Periodically, despite all our best efforts, we get a knock on the door. To complicate the matter even further, I have hearing loss in my right ear. If I am laying down on my left ear I literally cannot hear someone calling my name and most of the time I cannot hear knocking on the door either. I rely on my dogs hearing. All the same I would like to shape his behavior and the choices he has to choose from. I want his hearing assistance not his frenzied reactivity. Improvements have been made since Phoenix begin living with me 24/7 in the autumn of 2017 following the hospitalization of his former owner and his former owners eventual death. All the same I know it can get much much better with the right advice.

I freaking love this video! We've started doing this method with our dog and already see some improvements. However, you say that you have to prevent the stimuli from happening during the training process. Problem is, our dog barks at almost all foreign noises - people walking in the apartment above us, whenever the radiator kicks in, someone opening the building's front door, etc. I can't stop all those noises from happening so when we're not training and he can't see that it's me making the noises, he's going to bark. I think his issue is that he's startled or just uncertain what's making that noise. Any ideas? When he does bark at, say, the upstairs neighbor opening their door, what do I do? Do I keep treats on me at all times and try to predict it? What about when we're not home? I love the concept that you talk about (and I love all your videos!) but completely getting rid of all the stimuli isn't entirely realistic, at least with our dog.

Very nice training technique. Sadly, I can't get it to work with my GSD :( It all works just fine while training, but in the real world situation, when someone is at the door ( postman, pizza delivery ) no treats would work, nothing can distracts his attention from the door and I have great deal of a problem to get to and open that door and don't even wanna think of what can happen if dog slips through the door at that stage. Sure, GSDs are top security dogs, but also very clever ones :) if I can make him to do whatever I want, while we training, he seems to outsmart me on that, as he somehow understands "falls alarm".

With my dog, I trained the "place" command which includes a stay component. Answering the door is a very positive reinforcer and he understands, after training, that he will not get that reward unless and until he goes to his place and stays there. (During training I used a helper as the visitor.) Once I answer the door, greet the visitor and determine that the circumstances are appropriate, then I give the dog his release and he can come over to sniff the visitor. I hope those suggestions might help you.

Thank you so much for this video! Is there a way I can adapt this for my dog who barks when she hears people/animals/noises outside our apartment?
@kikopup
@kikopup 11 жыл бұрын
yes, that is in my Reactivity DVD, but basically you do the same thing- think of all the triggers and do them. Let your dog watch you walk out of the apartment while your friend/partner holds the leash, and they can feed the dog for hearing and seeing you at first- stomp your feet, cough, jingle your keys, skip, shuffle, babble, laugh, all you can think of. Then do it with the door closed, and then switch. You can also feed for every noise your dog hears when in the apartment- YES that is boring to do, but if you do it to the best of your ability for 2 weeks you could solve the problem, where if you feed for some noises but not others, you could actually make the barking at noises stronger rather than make it go away. So the key is providing reinforcement 100% after each trigger, until you change your dogs response. When the dog has a different response, you no longer have to train anymore. For example- our rescue Lurcher from Ireland barked at all noises out side of the apartment, we fed her for 2 weeks, it was very boring, but she never barked again at noises after that. Sometimes stress can bring back a regression and you simply need to do touch up training.

kikopup Thanks for such a detailed reply :) I'll start treating for every noise today and keep at it for the two weeks. My dog is 6 years old and I sadly admit I haven't seen your channel until now and my family might have done a lot of things wrong with her training. Is there any way we can start training her right and break her really old bad habits? We also really need her to stop attacking my cat. Is there anything we can do?

I suggest that you make meals and training on a schedule so that his pooping gets onto a regular schedule. I suggest wake up feed him/train if you wish, then take him on a walk- he should poop on the walk because exercise will help this happen. Then either walk in the evening and then feed. Or feed and then wait an hour or so and then walk. Some dogs like to poop after eating their dinner. It depends on your dog and their diet how many times they will need to go a day. If you feed food that has lots of fillers it makes them poop more. My own dogs I dont like them pooping on walks because I have four and I dont like to carry four bags of poop with me every walk, lol, so I feed them breakfast, have them poop in my yard, then walk them.

Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. I have brandon's book kzbin.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq in two formats. Not only the paperback version but also the kindle version to refer to when i don't have the paperback along with me. I have used his methods with my cavalier kc spaniel and turned a non-disciplined furbaby into a companion who has traveled thousands of miles with us across the country. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.

Yiphatable1 They don't know what to do when outside, so you can give them "ideas" by reinforcing them highly. Have some nice cushy beds out there- perhaps inside kennels, and you can practice going outside and teaching them to go into the kennels and settle for treats. You can also before the guests come, take them on an extra long walk, and then feed them some amazing chews or raw bones etc (separate them somehow if they fight over food of course). What you are doing is teaching them being alone outside IS reinforcing, and you have reinforced certain behaviors that they will enjoy doing later- like going into the kennels and taking a nap- where if you don't reinforce any behaviors you want them to do- all they can think about is getting back inside to do the behaviors they find reinforcing- being hanging out with you guys. If your dogs are to stressed to eat when outside, it is most likely that your dogs have some anxiety about being away from you, you can work on this inside the house first before the final step of having them outside- by practicing baby gating the dogs off in another room, reinforcing them for settling on their beds, by tossing treats to them, or feeding them bully sticks or kongs. You can walk or train them before they go into the separation area to set them up for success. Another option, if your house is big enough, is having them in a room with two dog beds, and close the door when there are guests- incase the weather outside is not nice. (for some reason youtube wouldn't let me reply to your comment, just tag you)

Knocking on walls or doors inside the house within view of my dog does nothing. She only freaks out when someone knocks outside of the house, and her outburst is instantaneous. Doesn't even give me time to reward good behavior. :/

Work with someone willing and move gradually. If you trigger the behavior, you took too large a step. You can break it down as much as necessary and it's always smart to start small. As Emily said, setting them up for success. My dog is on the same path as Kiko, but far less gone. I managed to get him still while opening the door from the inside and outside. I've yet to work with a partner but it will look the same. Stay in sit while the person is opening from the inside, move gradually towards outside and extend the pauses between the events.

Right now, I've got too many annoying people knocking on my door, unannounced, thereby triggering the behaviour before we've had a chance to improve. Might have to put a sign on the door threatening bodily harm if they knock, lol. Most people have my number and can text or call for me to answer the door.

I live in an apartment, and my dog barks when my neighbor stomps up our stairs, slams his door, and stomps through his hallway. I can definitely do the stairs part, and maybe the door part, but its going to be really hard to do the hallway part, and also to stop these things from happening between training sessions. Any suggestions on making that work?

yes thats why its good to break everything up to work on. for now you can take the dog outside on leash to meet the person after they call. This can greatly reduce the arousal for a lot of dogs. And keep a far enough distance that the dog is calmer.

I don't see how one can prevent a dog from experiencing triggers outside of training sessions until training is over. My dog's trigger is people knocking on my door. People have an annoying habit of sometimes just showing up unannounced.

Hi Emily. Thank you for this video tutorial. I've patiently applied your method for my rescue chihuahua and it has worked for us. Thank you so much for the quality information you put out on positive dog training. You say to prevent the behavior during training but what if the dog barks at people who live in the house, even just coming out of their rooms??? I cant make other people stay in their rooms, or out of the house, or alert me to every move they're going to make beforehand, obviously lol. I'm at the end of my rope dealing with shrill, piercing barking, please help.

Oh good luck. You can also put up a fence- the type they use for babies to keep the dog far from the door, and put on white noise and ask people to call you instead of knock and meet outside with the dog at a distance from them on leash to prevent barking

I have a 8 month old dog and when I take her out to walk , she starts growling at any stranger we come upon. She then starts barking really loudly. I dont know what to do anymore it is very frustrating cuz I really want to walk her. Is she sensing my emotions? Since i am an anxious person..

It really only took one training session to get my GSD to stop barking at the door. It was so unbelievably simple. He used to howl and lose his mind every time someone walked by or even parked a car across the street. Now I can leave the blinds open and he calmly watches everyone go by. This technique works!

I recently found your channel and I really appreciate how well and detailed you explain everything. I have a dog who reacts very similar to Kiko at the beginning of the video. Using your tips I have been able to successfully change his reaction to 'hello' and phone calls/ringtones, which is amazing! However, I live in a house where there is a workshop and we have people going back and forth between the two multiple times per day every weekend. He is set off by this and is rehearsing the bad behavior every time someone reenters the house. I am able to calm him during training sessions but I feel like I can never move forward because I cannot think of a good management method in the meantime. I don't want to leave him in a crate in the basement for hours a day. During the week he also reacts every time someone comes home from work. We have tried having him on leash or out in the yard when they arrive but he is so excited to see his loved ones he is barking like crazy. I am not sure how to make smaller steps for him to succeed. If you happen to see this any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there :) I really like your videos and I have been trying to train my dog not to bark when someone knocks at our door. The thing is though by now I have trained my dog not to bark when I am knocking at the door myself. (its been 6 weeks since we started the random knocking training and him not barking when someone knocks at the front door is still a kind of an accident situation) It seems he knows exactly the difference between the “training situation” and “real visitors”. I just can’t figure out what it is that I’m doing wrong... We usually have lots of visitors, friends coming over, postman knocking at the door so it’s getting really annoying when our dog gets into his barking-spiral 100 times a day (white swiss shepard, even scares some people off when barking). We’ve had him from the beginning (now 1 year old), and he has never made any bad experience with anyone at the door ever. What would be a common mistake while training? How can I teach him not to bark when strangers knock at the door? Could you give me some advice?

I suggest teaching her to not bark at all like in this video. And when something is out of the ordinary she will bark. I worked on not barking with my dogs in this way, and when someone was sneaking round my house to go in my back gate which is unusual there was a lot of barking from my dogs who dont bark when guests come over.

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much, but he barks A LOT... So, leaving home is always a challenge for us. My wife and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!

Thank you for this video! I have multiple disabilities because of a degenerative disease and I have a helper dog who is also a guide/seizure alert dog, he has very extensive training and certification. We have flown internationally and he is an excellent working dog. He has show extreme courage to save my life in a terrible situation. He was originally trained to bark once with his distinct 'alert' bark at the door, to let me know someone was there. In the past year it has become a real problem of being extremely door sensitive- any door bell-like or knocking ike sound drives him into a fit and he ignores my commands- very, very out of character for him to not be obedient!! Now last night we had two friends over and he not only barked at the door he barked at them once inside. It's too much. He was friendly and getting petted by them but still barking. Finding this video is wonderful. Thank you for the step by step! Tomorrow the practicing starts!

Related to this I just checked your "counter conditioning tips" video and I realized that we might have a problem. When counter conditining for knocking etc. my dogs start to offer behaviours like spinning or walking backwards. So am I right that no counter conditioning is happening since they seem to be focusing on getting the treats by offering some behaviours? What sould we do?

we had this problem and it was solved really easily; our barky car dog was place trained (like the settle video except our dogs are asked to settle on a mat which i move around the house) and then i put the mat in the car and then gave the command 'on the mat' and hey presto no more barky car dog who knows her place in the car. It also stopped her barking like a loon when i left the car to go pay for fuel etc Give her the command 'on the mat' and she goes and sits on her mat.

We have a 9 month old pup who we would like to continue to bring to work with us, but just recently started barking at clients when they come through the door. Clients don't knock or often even say anything upon entering, it's just the entering itself that causes our pup to start barking. How can I take this apart in to easier pieces so as to set him up for success?

Hi kikopup!! I've tried this with my German Husky (German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix), and this definitely worked for me!! Today, when my boyfriend came home from work, my dog went straight to him and wagged his tail with no barking. I told him "Good boy!" and offered him a treat but he just looked at it and went back to my boyfriend to be pet!! I think that's a good sign? :) (*since he doesn't expect the treat anymore??) Thank you so much for this!!!! I'd love to see more videos from you!! I'm now learning to walk my dogs together!
