I find that some people when starting with retinoids think that it’s like a moisturizer and use way too much amount of product that leads to irritation

I think many people who claim to have sensitive skin they actually don’t. Here is what sensitive skin means to me: - rosacea prone - intolerance to any form of retinol. Yes, I tried to build the tolerance very slowly (like you said) and it didn’t work (very bad breakouts) -very reactive skin to many skincare ingredients like: anything with second word olivate, oleate, stearate, monostearate, oils (with few exceptions), vaseline, perfume, any face cream oil based, retinyl palmitate and other I don’t remember right now. When I say very reactive skin means irritation (red spots), itching and small or big bumps sometimes in minutes. With the right skincare my face is flawless. And I can use chemical exfoliants in the good formula for sensitive skin prone to breakouts, niacinamide serum, peptides, vit C in water base formula and growth factor serum ( hard to buy in Australia and I hate the smell). I’m not a teenager (over 30’s) and my skin is normal with oily forehead. Because now I know what skincare is good for me (after many trial and error) my skin looks good (like before I started to build a skincare routine) and when I tell people I have sensitive skin they think I’m lying. So retinol is out of my interest and also I noticed many people who use it they do regularly in office procedures and use LED masks and/or other skincare gadgets in order to get rid of wrinkles, textured skin etc. I think retinol (prescription or not) has a role for people who can tolerate but is not as effective as some people (derms or not) try to convince themselves or others.

U can build tollerance with low dose orally retinoid and follow up topical with good barrier repair. This is in one from other way for heal severe stage rosacea . Low dose Oral.retinoids can take off imflamation and cut off degeneration skin with permament imflamation.

Great video and all the same advise as my derm gave me, Retinoid is my only active, the rest of my routine is simple bland barrier supporting products. I have dry sensitive reactive skin.

That’s a good starting plan - with time think about introducing niacinamide or azelaic acid as they work well synergistically and boost barrier function.

I’ve been using GP-prescribed Epiduo Forte for acne and find it so irritating that anything above 30mins of short-contact therapy a day does damage. I’d eventually like to work up to tretinoin, but I don’t think my skin can handle it any time soon!

Try switching to Epiduo and buffer first with moisturiser to ease yourself in.

Wow! Gorgeous dress and you look fabulous in it. Fear kept me from trying even the mildest of retinoids. Confusion about the types of retinoids and their associated percentages and how they compare is something I still struggle with. It’s difficult to figure out which is the next level that will give me results without freaking out my skin, which is easily annoyed in the extreme. I’m not ready to move up, yet, because my skin is still barely tolerating a very mild one three times per week. Is frequency more important or the form and strength of the retinoid?

What makes me doubt the safety of the retinoid as for what it can do to your health in general? Because when it’s forbidden to use pregnant women meaning there is smth in it that fundamentally can impact ur heslth?

I think a lot of times when something is not recommended in pregnancy, such as retinol, it may be partly due to the fact that there isn't enough research to assess.

Many things that you do or take topically are not advised during pregnancy but it’s mainly out of precaution. There’s little to no evidence on topicals for pregnancy. It’s ethically not something you can test. Most data relates to ingested Vitamin A.

Hello Dr Sam!! Great video and answered so many doubts. What about stopping retinoids before non-invasive laser treatments and micro-needling. Its always suggested to stop a few days before and a few days after what is the reason for this if it is true? also, if I am in advanced retinoid user, does this apply to people who tolerate it well?
@DrSamBunting
@DrSamBunting 9 ай бұрын
I think that’s wise. Your skin barrier will be reduced so potentially you’ll get much greater absorption- usually once the acute redness settles you can restart.

As a derm, would you say its better to use azelaic acid twice daily but over moisturizer, or azelaic acid once daily but directly on the skin ?

Great video. thank you. I am really seeing a difference with my rosacea using your cleanser, more azelaic acid and Flawless revival mask. I have the Flawless Nightly pro but am nervous about adding it to my routine as I don't really want to cut out AA and the mask as it works but I am 57 so should be thinking about anti ageing.

It annoys me, Dr Sam, that many of the skincare experts and estheticians on social media discredit the scientific validity of Granactive Retinoid - claiming that its efficacy is not backed by enough science. What's your take on these claims?

Let them :) I’ve seen so many patients who are familiar with prescription retinoids switch to GR and be very happy - they get the desired retinoid benefits with less irritation.

Dear Dr Sam please please help me, I have been researching this for weeks... Can I layer Copper peptide serum (1%) with Matrixyl 3000 serum (8%) without the potential of them itneracting in some way and reducing their efficacy? ( I started worry about this after I read on Timeless skincare website that the don't recomment layering their MAtrixyl 3000 serum with their MAtrixyl Synthe 6 serum due to potential interaction between peptide signaling activities (headbang). I want to layer copper with MAtrixyl because they work in different ways. I don't want to alternate days because all research is done on ingredients used daily, so maybe they are not effective used every other day? Please please help, this drives me to agony:D

Very helpful Dr Sam 😊I have been using Tret cautiously for a little while although I still get irritation sometimes around the nose area despite plastering on LRP Baume B5, then your lanolin ointment and then Vaseline! I would like to try treatment around the eye area but feel very nervous especially as I can get eczema/redness depending on circumstances, creams used, in door or outdoor conditions etc. Apart from layering moisturising creams is there anything else I am missing from my application that might help? Thanks
