If you have a fairly aggressive cam, the IAC becomes crucial for drivability. If you want the car to idle low enough to sound awesome and not die during higher RPM declutch, you need the IAC to catch the RPM drop so it doesn't stall the engine. This is called "dashpot" and more specifically "dashpot decay rate". I worked on mine using Moates Quarterhorse and Binary Editior.

I bought this 90 Ford F350 in Illinois up north, brought it back to Indiana, Inpls.. It had an idle that's not normal. Starts right up. And is a little high feeling normal. Run a minute, and tap throttle to bring down. Seems cool. Then tap again, and it's idled back a lil up high. Will do the same while driving. And didn't want to hit over drive or final gear. Ease back on throttle, and then it does shift. But get back on throttle And shifts back down. Done this for many miles.. Then I drove 65 more miles south and sat for almost a year while another bed was installed to convert into a wrecker. Finished that and brought it back to Indpls and was doing the same thing... Ok, now.. I had to do some Hydraulic work. So it wasn't being driven again for many months. But idle would still do the same while testing things. So I was told to replace throttle censor. Or positioning censor in Intake. That corrected the throttle some.. Bringing it down, and then it would shift out on test drive no problem. Some more time goes by testing equipment in driveway. Thinking all was fine. I get legal and drive it... BUT NOW.. It has some popping up front, and backfire in back through exhaust. I replaced many things, with no results.. The Smog pump stuff was partially disconnected from Illinois long time ago by previous owner. So I'm dealing with that too. SO.. Distrib Cap = nothing Wires = nothing 2 Vacuum hoses replaced = nothing. No results. Replaced fuel something on F/rail = Nothing. Then Plugs = BAM!!! It stopped. About 20 miles later, it starts back up again. Not as bad but same backfire.. So when I replaced the throttle deal, and removed the intake with the two large port holes, there was a gasket behind it. It looked good for being there. No rips tears or burnt marks. I cleaned a little and put this intake back on.. It's the only thing left that's different from purchase time. Is this where this backfire is building from? Cause I'm about to rip it back off and see.. But $250 roughly to fix this problem with a small result after plug change. Any idea's.. Try this and try that has gotten expensive. LOL

I got an 01 gt and every now and then out of nowhere would give me a misfire. I cleaned maf changed coils plugs tps also cleaned camshaft position sensor crankshaft position sensor. And the damn misfire was still there. So i took the iac cleaned and all and the misfire was still there. This time i took it off again and inspected the thing and I blew on one side covering the other end and I fond that there was leak. The weird thing is that on this year model the iac has some sort of button/knob on the top. And that's where the leak was coming from. So i popped the knob and it was attached to a little pipe. So i covered the end with electrical tape and the misfire went away after months and so many hours of work and troubleshoot. But I just wanna thank you because your simple informative video made think twice about the iac.
@scooter81878 ай бұрын
That black knob on the iac on an 01 is a vent cap. I don't know why covering it up would solve the problem. Probably need to replace the iac. Sadly, Motorcraft isn't making them any more so you'll need to go with an aftermarket version which is hit and miss.
@Markov_7278 ай бұрын

Not sure if this will help any of your problems, but I built a 5.0 20 years ago, and had idling issues since day one. Life kept me busy so it actually sat in the garage, and would take it out occasionally. Maybe 200 miles a year. Anyway, now to my fix. I had the itch to drive it, and was determined to find out the problem. I first sprayed throttle body cleaner all around to find a vacuum leak, but did not find anything. I finally started with the base idle set, and no success so I knew it was something else. I then went to check fuel pressure, and when I removed the vacuum line on my BBK adjustable fuel regulator, it was spitting fuel out of the vacuum port. I found this was an issue from brand new on the model with the vacuum port that comes out the side of the housing. They improved the internals on the newer versions where the port is vertical on the housing. If anyone has an older BBK adjustable fuel pressure regulator, the first thing you should do is remove the vacuum line, put your finger over the port and a finger on the vacuum line. See if it idles now. Mine started idling as soon as I did that. I just put in a fixed regulator from Autozone for the time being in my car, and it idles good.
@dntlss2 жыл бұрын
Like you i have been involved with these cars forever, dont see many people call them 5.0 these days,we never called them Foxbodies back then, ever,i have never heard good things about those BBK regulators, funny thing with adjustable regulators is that unless you are putting out massive numbers or your ride is forced induction they are nothing more than a gimmick, something to buy from Summit or LMR when payday comes,that good ole stock regulator will put your ride exactly where it needs to be, 39 with vacuum unplugged, thats all there is to it,if i had all the money back i spent 25 years ago on unnecessary things for my Mustangs i would be rich but it was soooo much fun getting that stuff in the mail and installing it,lol, guilty as charged.

It did t run well or shift right but it ran. I suspect TPS bad or dirty TP or IAC Going to test the TPS with my scanner and /or multi meter. And do a quick TB clean . If the TPS is bad , I’ll replace that with $20 part. And drive it out of there 90 min drive back home. But if I can clean it and it gets better I will drive it home as well to do more work on it in garage. Regardless getting rid of the car. @RUNINAGT3 жыл бұрын
I'm having an idle drop issue when you clutch to come to a stop. Most the time it drops once, then smooths out. If I turn the AC on, you have to be carful to catch it before it stalls. Now just HCI on it. Got it tuned and car runs great. Hers's the odd part. After a change to try and resolve, Car will have a great idle and the idle drop is very minimal, I guess how it's supposed to be. After about 100 miles, it comes back. This time I replaced the IAC and took it on close to a 2 hr trip to hit a Fox event. Car ran and idled better than ever. Once I got close to home it was starting to get the idle drop back. Drove 2 days this week ad it's back. Mind you the car runs great, and idle is great. Only issue is when coming to a stop. Prob 70% of the time the idle drops. If AC is on, it drops harder. What could cause it to react great to a change, only to go back after 100 miles or so? Again. She runs great. Idles great, heck yesterday I sat for 30 mins idling with AC on and never even bumped. Just steady. It's almost like the computer keeps going back to a diff setting. This car was an auto car and still has same computer. It's now a 5spd car, but we corrected the harness to the vss and used a chip with the quarter horse tune to dial it in. Tuner and myself are about out of options. Good thing is I can drive her anytime and still have a blast. 88GT T-Top

So.... I just started watching this randomly. I don't really have any issue with my idle. I have no AC, I do have power steering. BUT... When I have my car idling, if I unplug the IAC, literally nothing happens lol. What gives?
@BREW2LFOXBODY3 жыл бұрын
Just means your idle screw is adjusted in more to keep the car running. If it works and doesn’t bother you I wouldn’t worry about it.

Need help! When warmed up if i slightly rev my mustang and let off the throttle the rpm will drop and it will die. I have done base idle reset, fuel pressure look ok. Any ideas?

I have an 87' and it has started rough idle or shutting off once the engine gets warm. I'm thinking the TPS is the problem. I was second-guessing myself, but I'm thinking I'm going to replace the TPS today. We'll see.

Hey first of all I just want to say I enjoy your videos and I am a subscriber to your channel I have an 86 Mustang GT and when my car is cold it idols erratically when it warms up it’s a little bit better but I have a problem when the car warms up And when I try to hold the pedal at 1000 RPM it has a slight hesitation and the car shakes a little bit just wanted to know if you know what that was
@BREW2LFOXBODY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike I appreciate that 😎 honestly it could be a number of things.. check the normal culprits though. Timing, mass air meter, tps, fuel pressure and o2 sensors. Easiest way is to start unplugging things and see if it changes anything. The other obvious option is to pull the codes. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific just too many possibilities.

What about the load of a manual transmission, i get intermittent idle surge (high RPM's) when pushing in the clutch while in park or neutral to shift into gear.

Im having an issue on my 88 tbird 5.0 where it starts surging on when warm, especially when accessories are turned on. Idles around 1000 rpm in park. Also when i put it in gear...the idle is fine for about 4-5 seconds then starts surging, sometimes completely stalling. Could this be a bad temp sensor, spark plug, mass air meter, or ECM? Very frustrating. I tried doing a base idle reset and still doing it but 1000 rpm was lowest i could get it to idle in park. It's an E303 cam with GT40 heads, intake etc... mass air conversion from speed density. I heard the wrong torque converter can cause it but i dont think that's the issue. I have a 2200-2400 stall PA converter. Also have all smog and egr deleted, as well as any unnecessary vacuum lines. New motorcraft tps and iac as well.

Brew2l if my idle is doing exactly what your car did when you unplugged it what do you think because sometimes my car idles smooth and then randomly very up and down idle way too low and high it shouldn’t jump as much as it does and sometimes so low it stalls out . Just asking because I am going to follow your base idle reset video but is it a possibility u think it sounds like that iac ? And I’m going to go try the steering wheel turning to see if it corrects it but it’s crazy cold in New York that’s why I am asking because I’m waiting for spring brotha lol thanks for the videos always good content bro

Actually all carburetor's have an idle control circuit inside of them, if their blocked they cause a rough idle or no idle at all.

Love your videos man, been subscribed. Have a question for you if you have a sec, i own a 1989 5.0 5 speed convertible. Im getting voltage drop that will randomly go away. Sometimes will turn my aftermarket head unit off then back on. Checked my connections everythings good behind there, amp is bypassed and run off an aftermarket one. Random alternator feedback through stereo is happening. At WOT in low rpms sputters and jerks. Swapped out the distributer with an msd streetfire and a bbk tps sensor and the sputtering went away for the most part but is still there slightly.. Still getting votage drop. Before i installed the msd distributor i couldnt install either or of the bbk tps sensor or msd ignition coil without making it run like poo.. Any info or tips? Run into anything like this before? Running a stock alternator aftermarket head unit 2 8" woofers with pro tweeters and 6 and a halfs. Aftermarket spyder tail lighs and head lights.. Thanks for your videos bud helped me out a ton!
