Bullying has become an increasingly serious problem for kids.
And honestly, bullying behavior among adults has increased in the last several years as well; both on and offline.
Just yesterday I had a patient tell me that he is afraid to use the bathroom at his high school because kids take people’s phones and throw them in the toilet, and reach under the stall to take pictures that they then threaten to post on social media for everyone to see.
Last week I had a middle schooler admit that her sudden onset depression and cutting is because of bullying at school that spread to social media.
These are not isolated incidents. I hear stories like this from kids all the time. Parents and educators are often unaware of what’s happening, or the severity of it and how much it affects kids.
Traditional ways of trying to curb bullying behavior, like school assemblies and punishments, haven’t done much to address this problem. We need approaches that focus on empathy and relationship building, and that put this issue out in the open for all students on a regular basis.
That’s why I was so excited to hear about the musical and educational program Rebecca Burd and her team have put together and used in hundreds of schools over the last several years @speaklifethemusical. They use the power of storytelling, music, and drama to help kids connect to the emotions and experiences in the lives of kids who bully and are bullied. This is the kind of approach that changes school cultures, builds relationships among students, and reduces bullying. They’ve now made it available in a movie format that can be used anywhere at any time by schools and other organizations!
