@willia_music I do too mich. I love customising my handhelds with various different wallpapers and themes. Needlessly trying new emulators, even to games running perfectly fine on current true and tested emulators. Having fun with ROM hacks, and patching many games with quirky new features. Messing around with different frontends and firmwares. Scraping missing artwork to an OCD level. Tweaking settings to get just the right filter looks or performance I want. I seem to everything but play the game.

I was falling down this rabbit hole too, so I decided that I have enough devices to play on and have decided I'm not buying anything new until I get my money's worth out of what I have. I assigned a value of getting an hour of use for every $5 I spent on a platform to feel like I got my money's worth (actual playtime, not set up), and have been actually enjoying playing on them and catching up on old games with this method. But the main thing is that it's gotten me out of buying the next shiny thing because there's always going to be a next shiny thing.

Totally feel you bro. I own (for selling purposes) a Powkiddy RGB10MAX3 and couple of Anbernic devices (had a RP4 Pro but sold it to make room for the RP5, the screen on RP4 wasn't the perfect fit for me). I was waiting for the Retroid Pocket 5 but I started having second thoughts about investing too much money on it and then I got an RG505 for €96 on sale, I can play some PS2 game, I love the form factor and the screen and I'm in love with the thing (saved ~ €150 in the process). I'm trying to get to a rhythm were I can play 30 mins per day in the handheld, giving the chance to a platform every time and I feel I'm enjoying a lot. The syncthing Joey's video is also a gem to sync saves between devices (having fun setting up the environment) and thus focus on what's important: gaming

I think the idea is great, but IMO 1h/$5 is waaayyy too low. I mean a $300 device would only yield 60h of playtime. I'd probably go for 1h/$1 spent or something like that.

Oddly enough, I've been out of the emulation scene since before 2010 and just getting back into it. Bought an RG 556, loaded up a good few thousand games from many systems, as we should, and I needed a place to start. True story. I went from RG353PS to MiyOO Mini, to RG405M to RG35XX to see what all the hype was about. Tested the MiyOO mini and RG35xx and kept the RG35xx and returned all the others. Finally got some hours in on the RG35xx but it just didn't have enough power to upscale some of the PSX stuff I wanted so back down the rabbit hole. Returned the RG35xx and bought a Retroid Pocket 3 Plus and the AYN Odin Pro for a comparison. Returned the RP3 and had the Odin now for a year. I just let a friend borrow it because I haven't been playing it much. Now I am watching review videos on the RP5 and Odin2 and telling myself I really would play them more if I just had that sweet sweet OLED. Then a part of me really misses the pick up and play no nonsense of the RG35xx and the vertical form factor so I want to sell the Odin and just get the RG40xxV or the Cube. I have a problem help!

I've not had this issue I just have 2 handhelds 1 vertical 1 horizontal & I pay games accordingly, when I have time I stay on 1-3 games at a time no more until I complete one

This is why I'm content with having 2 and plan to get 3 1 truly pocketable device. The kind of device that can live in a pocket or bag for when I'm out and about or just have a spare moment. Emulation power isn't much of a concern for me at this level, so for me this is a Miyoo Mini v4 loaded with low intensity games and other time wasters. I might play some Spyro or Castlevania, but for the most part this machine is basically a dedicated Pokemon and Tetris console with some Pico-8 games 1 portable device. The kind of device that I can break out on the couch, or toss into a bag for road trips, really whenever I've got a spare hour or two. It's got enough power to emulate some heavier systems, but I'm not worried about squeezing much quality out of what I have. For me this is my RG405v which I've loaded with some medium intensity games and more time consuming titles. I might play the occasional round of Double Dash or Mario Sunshine, but I generally stick to playing DS, N64 and PS1 along with some older retro games that require a bit more focus. 1 dedicated emulation machine. This is the kind of device I could hook up to the TV and spend an entire afternoon with. It's still portable, but it's not likely to leave the house. It's got enough power to play pretty much whatever I want without breaking a sweat. For me the ideal system would be an RP5 as it kind of hits the right mix of power and price. Something I could play PS2, Gamecube, some PSP or Android and a handful of Portmaster ports if I'm feeling frisky.

@@awyrlas yeah, I have an ROG Ally X aswell for anything PS2 and up been playing the Original NFS Most Wanted & this isn't a soap box moment, but I'm actually amazed at how fast I feel in this old ass game and how much I'm enjoying myself compared to new racing games it's insane I'm ok designer so I can't put my finger on it but dang when I hit 200MPH I'm HUALING and on newer games I hit 300MPH and I'm cruising

I finally just started doing this. After having owned like 20 devices I finally have landed on an OG Steam Deck LCD and a RP Mini. I’m playing games that were in my library and list that I haven’t started or finished. Currently that means on the SD: Days Gone (Only an hour in but so far great), Batman Arkham and Shadow of The Tomb Raider - And on Mini Super Mario Sunshine, Bully and Wind Waker

You know what Joey, you're so right. I have several retro emulation handhelds and a Steam Deck. Just recently bought the og Cube last month (I've been loving it) and my GC RP5 is supposed to arrive today (which is awesome because the last time I used 4px, it took 12-15 days for my Anbernic SP to arrive... if the RP5 comes today, it would've only taken 9 days from when they shipped it). I haven't been playing games as much as I would like and buying handhelds is one of the reasons albeit a small one. Thankfully since I already set up my Cube, I don't really have to spend days setting up my roms for the RP5. I have more than enough handhelds to last me a long time. No more buying handhelds for me (unless they stop working). EDIT: just received my GC RP5 and it is gorgeous. Yup, took 9 days to be delivered from when it first shipped on the 18th using 4PX

One of these days, I'd like to get around to making my own personal lists: a "top 50 I've played but would replay" and a "top 50 most-interesting games I've never played but always wanted to". Then I'll pool together just those 100 games and use that as my list to go through. There are two problem with the crowdsourced lists like the one on RetroAchievements. Problem #1 is that you'll *never* find 'hidden gem' games on there; it's just the nature of those popularity lists that everything is inherently *not* very hidden. And problem #2 is that these lists will never fit all of your own likes and dislikes: if you *know* you can't stand Mario platformers (yes, I'm *that* person), it doesn't make much sense to go through a list in which *half* of the top 10 games are Mario platformers. 🙃

I don't have this problem because I came up with a solution similar to yours years ago: 1. Pick a system and find a top 10 list. Play through those games. 2. Repeat step 1 for a different system. 3. If you don't want to do step 2, then list 10 games from your youth that you never got to play or finish. Go back and play and/or finish them. 4. Make a list of five emergency backup games that require almost no effort to play. This will help you stay engaged with something in between tackling the top 10 lists. Some examples for me would be Mario Kart 8, Shredder's Revenge, and just about any Mame game beat em' up or shooter.

Thanks Joey. Deep inside I’ve always known this. I understood it when I realized I had nothing else to watch about handheld reviews, I’ve watched everything that came out this year. And I started playing. I love all PlayStation, PS1, PSP, PS2 and my PS5 that I’m playing more than anything else. It’s nice to hear straight words from someone who has influence in this hobby. I’m keeping only my Odin 2 and rg40xxv. That covers everything emulation wise, really.

I just find something to play and stick to it by avoiding the doom scrolling and just go to the Last Played area, or Retroarch's History menu and resuming the last thing I was going through.

It may be blasphemy, but I stopped buying handhelds and have been playing games. I got a cheap phone just for gaming, clipped it onto my favorite controller, and have been having a blast. Just 14 games beaten so far, about 5000 points on retroachievements, but I'm not in a hurry. The point is to have fun.

Amen to this my man! I’ve found a good way to go it to really limit and curate what’s on each system to a top 5 or so. Maybe even have a 2nd SD card for this very limited set. That way if yiu do start bouncing around all distracted, there are only so many destinations! I’m as guilty of this as anyone, especially having just bought an Odin 2 which opened up another 3-4 systems for me, but I’m trying hard to focus! Wipeout Pulse on PSP for me right now - it looks amazing upscaled and plays so so well. It’s hard even on easy but fair, I’m unlocking more tracks each day and the play sessions can be short. Keep up the great work!

I almost convinced myself to buy the GC RP5 after shelling out money for the RP Mini preorder. I even told myself that I would sell the RP Mini to offset the RP5 purchase. But then after 24 hours from placing the order, I realized that it was not worth it as I have an Odin 2 Pro that is still the workhorse of my handheld collection, and swapping the RPMini for the RP5 would be a moot exercise (sans the AMOLED screen update). So I cancelled my RP5 and opted to continue using my Odin 2, RP Mini, RGB30, and RG35XXSP in rotation :) fingers crossed I mean

You can list all games by player count on Retroachievements. Click nav bar games > all games > view button > players > sort players more. If the list is different its been updated since last year.

I used to have just a curated list of roms, but it seemed like every time I would loan a handheld to a friend, it would be missing many of the games they wanted to play. Or I would find out about a game I suddenly wanted to try out, but it wasn't on the device. What I do now is include all of the roms, but create a favorites list and set it as the default when the device boots up. Some devices I have as dedicated. For example, my RG353P only has Nintendo games on it, and my RG ARC only has Sega games on it. Another thing I like to do sometimes is create an "anniversary list." For example, for this year, I have a list of the best games from 1984, 1994, and 2004, and focus primarily on playing games that I missed from those years growing up, or finally beating the games I wasn't able to before.

Really good point. I played a fair bit but I probably spent more time setting up and building my library. I have the Cube which is fairly powerful, but can't really run Dirge of Cerberus or the Xenosaga games properly. I see myself upgrading in a few years.

The community aspect is a great point. Genearlly, I still think most of the handheld hype is overblown, considering you could get a decent portable emulation experience all the way back on the PSP. GBA games ran fine on gpsp, PSX games ran perfect, the PSP JRPG library was unmatched, etc. Not bad for a 20 year old handheld. Just gotta find some people to enjoy old games with. Personally, I went back to my Vita this month, and plan to stay there until I finish some games! Might even do some hardware mods to it, USB-C, note9 battery, new grip etc... been running my own little discord game club for playing games in Japanese, and will stick to that for now :) The white OLED Steam Deck beckons, but I will stay strong, and play some games. Love the idea of this video! Let’s be honest we all are guilty of a little hoarding every now and then then lol. One thing I do that has helped me is using the favorites to my advantage. I put 1-2 on favorites and finish those before I try new stuff. Also I usually only add stuff I plan to play ❤.

Once setup I go back to one I've previously setup and tweak settings or ROMS or setup a new one that's arrived. I brought 7 this month, so I can't keep up with my own supply! Definitely can relate to this, except I always end up playing Dr. Mario instead of Pokemon. A problem I run into also is that I’m generally super tired by the time I get to do some gaming and if I get stuck somewhere in a game I rarely have the patience to go look up the solution or spend the time trying to figure it out. I have like 4 games in progress that fit that description.

I've had fun this past month revisiting older handhelds from last year like rg505 and rg552. I have a lot of fun with retroachievements too. The "Beaten" category you mentioned is a fun way to track what you've played, and I'll Master on some games if i'm motivated. I'm also finally setting up my laptop for tougher games. I got tired of playing Beetle Saturn solely on Odin 2, lol. It is nice that a laptop can do Beetle along with runahead if needed. Overall though, just been playing more games and less buying devices.

We are just like children that love to have new toys, play a little then want another one. I don't have 3rd party handhalds but a hacked 3DS, a hacked PsVita and a hacked Switch. A bunch of emulators on PC and this is absolutely enough for me. I don't have the time to play to all the game I would want to play. Thanks for the video. It is a very good advice.

Years ago I stated making backlog lists for each system with games I loved and games I missed, then filled them out a bit more by watching best-of and hidden gem videos and adding anything that looked fun or interesting to me. Some devices I still put full libraries, but others I just put the curated list, and the curated devices definitely get more play time.

Some games you can beat and some games you can't beat and some games have a story that makes it worth it to play the game all at once versus making it up every once in awhile and coming back to it like Picross for example.

got the Ayn Odin 2 Pro.. bought it like 7 months ago.. still in the box.. never used.. got every game you can imagine on multiple hard drives.. got a modified PS Vita.. Glad to hear someone else call out those 40,000 game sets as being kind of ridiculous. How would someone even scroll that on something like a Miyoo Mini is beyond me. I have a personal collection of totally legal not at all downloaded ISO/Roms on my Pc, and I just load whatever sounds like it'd be fun on a specific handheld. Saves a bunch of time downloading/redownloading, and I don't have to scroll past games I'd never play in a million years. Made setting up the Retroid Mini take less than an hour as I already had everything in place(Admittedly not a frontends guy so I just downloaded the emulators and transferred files while they were downloading)

I realised i wasnt playing games and was just tinkering with my consoles last year, so i set my self a knew years resolution to complete a 100 game in 2024. Mostly jrpgs but i wanted to start some seires i never tried before that are historically important like metroid and zelda. After spending two weeks creating a physical ever expanding Backlog i started check games of the list 😅 Ive completed 96.. Ys has being a highlight im up to seven 😊

honestly my favorite part is litrally setting up the device and getting the most of it only to realize i have other options that are simply better. but idk something about that whole setting up process is really fun.

In the past few years we all just come way into collecting this handhelds like pokemon At first because one is better then another and then beacause we just want an other one because well it just look pretty And then we become addicted to collecting them and we forget the reason we came here is to play some retro games! Damn I felt this. Literally had days where the wife and kid left and I had maybe two hours to play and I look at my Vita, 3DS, Switch, Ally X, SNES mini, PS Mini... and end up wasting two hours deciding what to play.

💯 I had three emulators, it was too many. I wouldn’t play anything because I wouldn’t know which one I should use. It’s weird that instead of playing a different one each night I just wouldn’t play them as the solution. I sold two of my emulators to friends for amazing prices I might add; now I play my 35xxsp all the time. It’s special to me now because it’s my only one, ya know how it was when you were a kid and the feeling you are trying to chase. Less might be more when it comes to handhleds.

Why would anybody ever play kirby super star when super star ultra exists? Its such a better game in every way (as far as i can tell). Also while it doesn't matter as much I think nightmare and Dreamland over Kirby's Adventure If you're going to play on a smaller screen.

I love this video's topic. I have three handhelds and I'm satisfied until I can get something that emulates a certain dual screened system cheaply, with a touchscreen so I can do the second screen. I still play my first device the most, and usually for NES. I got some guidebooks from the 90s for old times sake.

I’ve suffered from what you’ve mentioned for years with subscription services for films and games, and you’re right, we end up not watching/playing anything. The trouble is, it’s now entered my retro handheld state of mind and I’m not playing anything. I’ve completed several PS5 games recently but not one retro game and I think it down to the reasons you mention and that I’ve purchased individual physical copies of PS5 games that I feel more invested in. I don’t know, it’s a really odd feeling.

This is something that I'm always conscious of, and I always make an effort to curate a library of games I truly want to play in lieu of dumping full thousand-game romsets onto every device. I consider what systems are most suitable to the hardware I'm playing on, and whether I want them because they're a game I'm actually excited to play or if I just feel like I "should" have them since they're popular (never been a Mega Man fan, still feel the urge to install all 30 of them on every device). I find myself using "top 50 [genre] games for the [system]" type videos a lot to find games to play, or just going to popular "sharing" sites and sorting by downloads. Another good way to find games you should have on your device is to go without it for a while and ask yourself from time to time "What do I wish I was playing right now?" Whatever game you're thinking of, that's the game your should have on your device first and foremost.

Still rocking the Odin Lite , and the amounts of games between emulators, native android games and ports is just crazy. Sure I cant play the hardest to emulate ps2,gc and switch games + no winlator, but my lilbrary is packed with high quality titles that can honestly keep me occupied for years. Yet I watch every video of new upcoming andoid / windows handhelds :D Almost went for the RP5 for an upgrade, but the stick placement killed it for me.

I made a list a few years ago and have been slowly going through it. At any given time, I am playing several in parallel. It's a great way to focus and actually enjoy the extremely limited time I have for gaming. In the past year, I've finished Super Mario World, FF6, FF7, Advance Wars, Castlevania SOTN, F-Zero, Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Mario Golf, NHL 07...

As a father of two, with a full time job and 2 classes shy of completing my Masters degree, I have always had a game I am trying to get through, even if it takes me a month or more to do it. Just beat NFS carbon, and now I’m playing through time splitters. Never had an issue with this. I do have an Odin 2, and the only thing that can make me upgrade at this point is PS3/Xbox360 emulation on android and the need for a device that can run them. Anyways, happy gaming!

I have RG 35XX PLUS to test before gifting to a family member, and SP for myself when playing games at PS1 and below. Steam Deck is handling anything above that until the handheld production has something that can handle up to PS2 reliably. I buy only when needed and when sufficiently developed.

I've only bought a pure emulation handheld for the first time recently, Miyoo Mini Plus & Trimui Smart Pro, but between 3DS, Switch, PC/Steam, Steam Deck, PS5, PS Vita, Android, this caution applies to all of them. I've gotten very good at beating games in the past years, there was a dark time in my life where it was nothing but browsing Steam sales or staring at games in my library. Now I have no problem beating 15-20 games a years, several of them being RPGs like Persona, Yakuza, Pokemon, etc.

Nah, I love collecting these cheap handhelds and just playing a few games on em. I usually just install games for one system on them that suits it perfectly. One day there will be a under $100 handheld that will be as powerful as the Pocket Droid 5, damn I will have a lot by then LOL
