All great tips, Mark. What really is disturbing in the maintenance arena is the recommendation by the manufacturer in marketing concerning maintenance and the competition between auto manufacturers to make cars which they claim require less maintenance. So, they start with these insane 10,000 mile oil change intervals. Even with synthetic oils, which will breakdown with turbo charged engines .Mostly the higher end luxury cars, like BMW, Mercedes, etc have these service intervals. So, before you can even peel off the window sticker, consumers are headed for major issues.
@ECPP2 жыл бұрын
You are totally right and these new cars do not defy the laws of physics so I would agree, stick with industry best practices and more frequent oil services are critical as it now does more than just lubricate engine parts. Canoe and variable valve timing and turbo lube are a couple more. Clean oil is good.

@@ECPP BMW, Mercedes, VW should adopt the philosophies and pride in manufacturing like Toyota.
@avengersendingangel89072 жыл бұрын
@@ECPP Manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes and even Ford offer pre-paid scheduled maintenance services, which makes financial sense for THEM to push out the intervals as long as possible so they have to pay for as few as possible. More profit. Some BMW's 15,000K interval!
@FFE-js2zp2 жыл бұрын
@@avengersendingangel8907 I think it’s 16,000 miles. And a GDI engine dumps soot in the oil. The only way to filter soot is to change the oil. And an oil change interval makes no sense measured in miles. An V8 F-Type cruises at idle, 1100RPM at 60 mph. My 1985 MR2 cruised at 4500 to 7500 RPM with its monster 90 ft-lbs of torque. It’s engine spins that matter. That MR2 lost all compression at 80,000 miles, which was like 350,000 miles on a strong engine with long gearing. A 9000 RPM car might need oil changes every 1000 miles.

Thanks Mark ! Checking coolantlevel regular is probably the best lifesaver for older cars . It saved my 22 year old Rover ! Hoses were dried out and started leaking , thanks to weekly - yes weekly - checking I saw it right on time . Engine still running like new ! The other things you mention are important too , but sudden overheating can kill an engine completely and in less then a minute .

You are totally right Chris. Modern engines really do t like the overheat. Unfortunately all aluminum engines are common and easy to destroy

Fantastic advice Mark! My buddy with a Harley CVO lost his engine because of failing to check oil levels. Allow a digress - The siren call of various BMWs is always in my ear, You have most likely saved me alot of money. As you stated in your previous video, the prices for them are low, and even the "bridge M's" are now affordable used with relatively low miles.
@ECPP2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for sharing and you are right there are many decently priced used BMWs but many are off leases so it’s a bit of a gamble. With that said, much of the maintenance stipulations are stout under a lease as part of the contract
@Akecherfd84242 жыл бұрын
That is a great looking BMW. I have been keeping needed services done to my current truck like you are talking about in this video. I learned from an old car the hardway. I never had the brake fluid flushed out. The brake calipers locked up. Had to replace the roaters, brake pads and calipers. Not getting fluids changed leads to failures. Not going to let that happen again.

I'm big on a smooth driving style. Along with everything you mentioned, if you're doing jackrabbit starts and otherwise flooring the throttle constantly it's a sure fire way to wear out the CV joints. Having never done a replacement job on any of my cars because I don't abuse them, even if I do drive a bit on the quicker side, I don't know how much a CV replacement job costs but I'll go out on a limb and say it's not cheap and it's something that can be totally avoided if you don't pound on the car.

great tips! i would humbly add removal and storage of the engine beauty cover......since it just traps heat in wearing out plastics faster.......dont throw it away.......keep it for when you want to sell it of course. @fearedlegend Жыл бұрын
Mark please make a video about storing your vehicle during winter. I know about fuel conditioner, trickle charger and such but the big question is: should you start your engine once in awhile ? For how long ? Should you move the car a couple feet to avoid flat spots on the tires or should you just park it and not start the engine at all for the 6 months storage time ? I have a 2018 911 GTS which I store inside an unheated garage and I start the engine once halfway through storage for about 5-7 minutes and I move the car about a foot. Engine 😢condensation ? Advice please !

adding in a little bit(a few ounces) of lucas oil additive (pure synthetic one) will greatly prolong your engine. it has something in it to bind together soot/contamination that would normally be too small for the filter to pick up(i tested and confirmed this myself). you only need a small amount for a new engine because you don't need it's bearing cushioning ability that's needed in engines that have a lot of wear/slop that causes parts to smack together. ps that burnt smell in lightly used oil is soot contamination starting to build up.

Very true, Mark. Definitely great tips to keep your car lasting longer. Especially, when you do consider buying a car it will be your second biggest investment you'll ever make. I had recently bought a Camaro, a V6 because I know a SS and up isn't going to last as long as a V6. I also know the more mods you do to your car the more it will wear out prematurely, too. Cars are engineered a certain way for maximum effectiveness, so I'm keeping my car stock with the exception of a aftermarket exhaust set up. I also got the exterior protected with film and even better I got a disable placard. I don't have to worry about some woman parking too close to me. I also drive my car conservatively, even though it is a sporty muscle car. We're living in tough times these days. Even the cost of used cars had gone up in price, crazy! All the more reason to take heed of this advice. Your car is your independence.

Today I saw a brand new XC90 hitting the curb with one tyre at something 10-15 kph while the driver was doing a 180 degree turn in an intersection. Don't do that. On this note, when I recently bought a 3 year old F31 I focused a lot on the rims and tyres. They usually tell a lot about how cars have been driven.

Great video. Thanks for all the tips. Do you feel that with more and more vehicles going to turbo charged engines , that this would reduce life expectancy of the engine?
@ECPP2 жыл бұрын
I actually do not. I think turbos have needs, cool down, warm up, and good oil and a well designed car has better internals and cooling to compensate for example a Porsche 911 Turbo has a very long life if not modified. Problem is many substandard manufacturers also use this tech and the. Turbos get a bad rap.

Great message except too many car owners don’t care. Just put gas in and go. Wait til it starts smoking or stalling then, maybe take it to some mechanic at Pep Boys. Finally, start crying when the car breaks down and won’t start. Very few people today actually work on their cars. It’s a throw away society. Just buy another. Now that’s progress!
