My experience dealing with manufacturers in China is, you can spend hours, weeks or months to make your own design, and then you get them to sign an NDA, but because Copyright and Trademark law is partially non-existent, they will put your design up for sale as soon as you finished the prototype. That's the reality of dealing when dealing with manufacturers in China if you don't have the cash or network to take them to court. This happened to the company I worked for, they "stole" 3 designs and released them to the public before my company had them ready for production, making my company the "copy" while my boss spent millions on design, moulding and prototype.

A profound comment on older artists. I am a painter by education and been playing guitar professionally for the last 47 years and 59 years total. I am NOT anybody. Just an old dude in his 7th decade still making gigs and still painting. One thing you learn as the decades roll by is to take your time and nothing less than your very best ability is acceptable. An oil painting burns like a can of gasoline. You also learn that failure is your best teacher….soooo painful but it happens when you take the chances that are dangerous. Great channel Sir. A true intellect. Thanks

You’re a true inspiration to us, sir. That is decades of art and skill i could hope one day to at least possess a sliver of. (espcially playing the guitar) And yes, failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. Cliche yes, but also truth.

the Pirate channel 🏴‍☠ always informative and interesting and full of Pirate behaviour... I've recently come into contact with a lesser attractive side of the Watch Industry / Agencies that work with the Watch Brands and it is not so pretty... So... I always try to keep things happy and fun.

I love Lorier- their watches are well built, great designs, and excellent customer service. But, I think they’re stuck because in keeping with their choice to stick with vintage feel, they’ve not added new color ways and even discontinued many to where some models only have one. They also improved the bracelet quite a bit but I think they’d benefit from adding a OTF clasp. I just hope they stay afloat and continue to improve

That rad (I meant to type red, but I'll leave the rad) Vesuviate Attivo is one of their top picks in my opinion. The watches are too large to really consider and perhaps not quite ticking enough aesthetic boxes for me to truly consider it, but they offer good value, interesting design, and standout shapes, so there is a lot going for it.

I have a Helm Vanuatu which I picked up with no wait before Helm really took off, it is a great dive watch for the money. I don't get the feeling that Helm is trying to compete with any other company by using waiting lists to seem more exclusive, I don't think they want to produce more watches and it has left some folks frustrated because they would love to have one and don't care to wait, we are not good at waiting these days and Helm does not seem to be raising prices because the watches are in short supply, just my take. As someone else mentioned, the Helm that you pictured is not the Vanuatu, the Vanuatu is a more traditional looking, almost Sinn or Damasko in appearance.

There is, in my opinion, defensible and possibly useful ways of working with AI as a designer and for some particular arts, too. In product design, I think it can be a good way to test ideas crudely and come up with comparables. Besides that, if used smartly, it could also generate ideas or help shape them. How many of us are not very capable of critiquing an existing result but would find it hard to come up with something excellent from scratch? I think even if that is not you, that dynamic of AI stands a chance of helping out. The devaluing aspect comes in when only using AI and sticking with it all the way.

helm: infantile wait lists, no ability to manage a company, NOPE. Not playing the waiting list game.
@andyr01
@andyr01 6 ай бұрын
At least they do the wait list right, you can see where you are on the list, you will get contacted, you can ask them to rollover to the next batch if finances are bad that month etc. I don’t think they set out to create a waitlist situation, demand definitely outstripped supply, but do I think they should be doing more to get on top of it? Yes, of course. I’m a very happy Helm customer btw, had to wait about 14 months for my Vanuatu.
@Brynn-be9zr
@Brynn-be9zr 6 ай бұрын
Why is it infantile to have a well-managed waitlist? I remember when Helm didn’t use a waitlist and just dropped a batch of watches and it was a mess. And please explain “no ability to manage a company”. Do you have some inner insight here that I’m missing?
@lorenzc811

@@Brynn-be9zr Exactly what I thought too. Been trying to get a Helm since 2017. It gets sold out within 30 seconds every time they drop a batch. I got mine when I had a chance to be one of the first people in the waiting list. Very happy with this microbrand and the only microbrand I own that is ISO certified divers 😊
@Brynn-be9zr

Oh, and speaking of infantile, a key marker of emotional maturity is delayed gratification. Which is why infants throw temper tantrums in stores (or KZbin comment sections) when they can’t get what they want when they want it. Just sayin’. And I think selling out every batch of a product one makes and keeping one’s business exactly as large as one wants it to maintain the standard of living and work/life balance one wants sounds pretty well managed to me. Just sayin’.
