Brian's Lawn Maintenance

4 жыл бұрын

So over the last few weeks and months I've received this question almost as much as any other topic, and that is, should you pre-sharpen your lawn mower blades. I know it's a simple topic, but I wanted to spend a few minutes and give you my answer in the most nontechnical way possible, ha!
Now I will say this, I am not a lawn mower blade manufacturer and no, I cannot provide a technical answer from that vantage point. But I will sat this, that after buying hundreds of lawn mower blades throughout the years, I believe that unsharpened blades right out of the box seem to cut just as well as a regular razor-sharp-edge lawn mower blade that was recently freshly sharpened.
I know everyone wants your lawn mower blades razor sharp, but the reality is, they don't really have to be. Take a look at the laser-edge lawn mower blades for example. The cutting edge it's self is quite honestly, a rather dull and not razor sharp edge. But those blades still slice and dice like crazy. I feel the same is true for a lawn mower blade right out of the box. They don't need to be "razor sharp" to leave a good cut quality. I feel more important than that is the correct angle and an above average sharp edge, basically, not a blunt dull edge.
The bottom line is, the protective paint and coating wears off extremely quick, and before you know it, the actual metal is exposed. I've always personally felt that fresh blades right out of the box always seem to cut the best, but that's my experience and opinion. After that initial day or two worth of use, we then go ahead and sharpen the blade.
Love to hear your guys thoughts on the topic! Do you guys presharpen your blades, or prefer them right out of the box with the protective coating and paint? Leave us a comment down below and weigh in!

Never saw the reason to pre-sharpen the blades - the paint is there but it wears so quickly that I personally don't think it makes a difference to the cut.

I don’t pre sharpen. I feel like they’re sharp enough out of the box and I feel like the paint cuts down on friction. If only for a very short amount of time.

My man I was just in your neck of the woods this weekend, was seriously impressed with the stripe game most landscapers have. Must not be easy to gain clients and maintain them as it looks like many are very particular about their lawns. While I prob drove by some of your lawns I’m super impressed y’all in metro Detroit are killing it at the lawn care game. Gave me a new appreciation of you man. Keep up the great work.

At my Home, I mow 7 acres of tough Fescue, once per week from Late march until middle October and I have a brand new 2022 Bad Boy Rogue, 61 with the 35 HP Kawasaki, with the cut set at 3.5 inches. My last Zero turn was a 2017 Big Dog Diablo MP, with the same engine but 60 inch deck. Before that I had a 61 inch Snapper Pro Commercial with the 25 HP Kawasaki engine. I always have used an angle grinder to 'Freshen' the blades during this long season, in between 'bench' grinding, maybe 1/4 inch past new, never balanced the blades and my lawn looks like a Golf course, with no Vibration and not one problem with Spindles. New blades are just attached as is and they work great. Fuel consumption is much, much better with new blades and TODAY, that savings helps! Love the Video's!

I agree with you. The sharper the blades the bigger the dings. We have gravel driveways everywhere and high lifts suck it into the deck, so blunt, out of the box is better...plus commercial mowers spin faster.

I put an edge on all of my new blades, I have thrown a new set on out of the box to me they cut like blades that haven't been changed in 2 weeks. Also I have found with factory Exmark blades and especially Oregon blades they are out of balance right out of the box. I like the Oregon blades but I have had some that will spin a full revolution on the balancer they are so far out.

Good video Brian. I do the same with mower blades that I do when my truck needs new tires. I buy a new truck or mower! 😀 One thing I am curious about… do you have a particular angle you prefer to sharpen your mower blades or do you sharpen at the same angle as when the blade was new? I am curious if you or your viewers, i.e. other professionals, have an idea of what blade angle seems the most durable or lasts the longest? Thanks for your time.

I put my newly bought blade right on the lawnmower but now the grass blades’ cut edges look rough and shredded. I can’t remember if that was the result when I first used it, though. The part of the blade that does the cutting is the square corner of the blade and about the first inch. The remaining just cuts the clippings to smaller pieces. Magna matic has a very good video on blade sharpening 101.

I have never sharpened new blades. Worst set of blades I bought were Gator blades. I had high hopes bested on the reviews, but they left uncut grass along the outside six inches of the deck. It was like they had very little lift, and didn't lift the grass to cut it. Went back to my standard blades, and no more issues.

I agree with Brian , new is very good . for razor sharp people, do you stop at 1 acre to resharpen, or every tiny yard replace or resharpen. Too sharp wears blade out quicker. And people with big yards don't want grinder running all day for one yard. Lol just my opinion. Nothing more.

I might if I am in the mood to do it. I might also check the blade edge to make sure it feels sharp before that. I should get used to filing them so that when I do anything it does not get the metal hot. Just watch your fingers while filing the blades to avoid accidents and don't try to be hasty as that will make those accidents more likely to happen.

i thought you meant presharpened as in sharpened for quick swaps, as opposed to "remove blades, sharpen, reinstall blades." nope, i throw new blades right onto the machines. scalpel sharp blades dull faster than just plain sharp. and of course, it's all about that sharpening angle.
@austinnipper6460
@austinnipper6460 4 жыл бұрын
I've heard the dullness at the tip helps keep the blade sharp longer. If it's razor sharp, apparently it'll bend back the metal quicker. A razor sharp blade is also more susceptible to to damage due to the decreased backing at the tip.

I pre sharpen and sharpen them all the way to the stud. Seems to get a better mulch and finer clippings. It's a me thing, I also sharpen with the wheel running clock wise and a 30-35 degree face angle, I make them so sharp to where it will cut into cardboard. I also will fine tune the balance by getting them as close A possible on the cutting face then hit the corner of the high lift wing and get them perfect. Years ago a company I worked for kept blowing spindles left and right and I didn't do the sharpening so I asked the boss if I could for my mower and I stopped blowing spindles, and then by the end of the year I had taken over And the other guy. I've been using John Deere lawn and garden tractors for almost 40 years. I always buy OEM JD replacement blades. They don't paint them and they are always RAZOR sharp right out of the box - literally. For my conditions I've always found that a SHARP edge cuts best. In fact, the sharpening instructions in the manual states that the sharp edge should be no THICKER than 1/64-inch. A lot of guys misinterpret this to mean no THINNER than 1/64-inch because they only look at the illustration and fail to read the accompanying text.

Pre-sharpening takes off the paint. Leaving the paint on helps protect the blade so that you don't have to do the first sharpening as soon. I haven't done any tests, but this seems logical.

Agreed, the reason new blades cut better is ironically becouse they are not knife sharp, virtually every blade manufacturer along with every major lawn mower manufacturer on the planet advise against sharpening blades to a knife sharp edge, new blades have a 5 mil blunt edge

I would love to do a video response to this! I am picturing my Benchmade Mini Griptilian knife as I'm watching and listening. Factory grinds on knifes are rough cut / ground. In the case of mower blades, they are just laser or water jetted rough cut. Both blades are cut to a high standard, some definitely higher than others. But still yet, they are designed to be a certain angle and depending on what it is designed to cut, they are designed to be have a certain sharpness. Now if you order a custom knife, it will come honed to a mirror finish to cut at it's full potential. Put the same level of detail onto the mower blade, and you will defiantly get a better cut. Does the factory grind / cut do an excellent job? Absolutely, but its not a refined cut. As far as mower blades go and for what it being utilized for, presharpening them is overkill. It does help, but for the number of cuts, and the frequency of times you have to sharpen them, leave the factory one on, because you are just going to be re-edging it in a week either way.

I installed a new set of Oregon blades on one of my mowers that were not presharpened. The grass tops were all broken and brown on the tips. Why is this happening?

I put them on and run them till I notice the cut is not quite as good, which is usually 25 to 30 hours. Then I look them over and may resharpen or may chunk in the trash just depends.

exmark. my opinion is razor sharp is best. it will not last as long especially if you hit sticks and such. i mow about an acre + and change them out after first 2 mows and then mid season. they sharpen easy as long as you don't wait too long. keeping the angle close to factory is important. dull will last longer since it will chip less. small chipping isn't an issue. i just finish with a file and make sure to watch those areas. i have had 1 exmark blade that was close, but out of balance fresh from the box. i have not seen a balance issue otherwise, this includes kubota.

I personally don't sharpen new blades. When I sharpen blade I always put a blunt edge on them and they seem to hold there edge longer than making them razor sharp.

We use the same blades. We use quite a bit of them also. They bend easily( when you hit things that you can’t see) As for sharpening them new. No, who has the time to sharpen sharp blades? I know we don’t

First of all know your audience. I haven’t balanced a blade in years. Never had a bearing failure, or any issues. When you cut grass/ landscape for a living then you would know how to do it too. So watch yourself. Never had any issues with things other than now I have a keyboard warrior calling me a dumbass. Hey jimmy jimmy gfy!

I was thinking about this all day today (don’t flatter yourself just wanted to not be an a-hole on Brian’s page here)and just adding to your remarks. I have made hundreds of thousands of dollars mowing grass, not including landscaping, and run a profitable one man show with a helper. That’s not too dumb. Pretty smart I think. Oh and my customers pay on time every time! Good luck sir!

Ideally, you sharpen a blade very sharp for the prettiest cut and less strain and fuel usage. Since the main enemy of blade sharpness is speed, you can actually slow the engine speed 20% and the blade will stay sharp 3x longer. Of course too slow and lift is poor, so you have to find the sweet spot where lift and sharpness are both good. Pros don't have that luxury, they have to go balls out and their nice sharpening job is gone in a day or 2.

I agree. Brand new blades tend to cut the best. I do not presharpen my new blades. I think it is a waste of time and a good mower blade.
