The best how to video I've seen on this subject. A potentially confusing procedure is concisely and straight forwardly explained without loads of extraneous, and distracting information.

I have a Nikon Ftn Photomic (circa 1971) and it is perfectly happy using Nikon AI/AIS and compatible lenses providing the lenses are equipped with the meter pin engagement prongs ('rabbit ears'). I have a Nikon 'E' Series 28mm lens which does not have the meter coupling prongs which I also use on the Ftn with 'stop down metering' and that works perfectly fine as well. Conversely, I have a Nikon/Nippon Kogaku pre-AI 50mm f/1.4 lens which I will not use on my Nikon FM and FG bodies..don't want to bother with (or forget to) flip up the AI tab on the FM to allow use of that lens on that camera. I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AI prime lens anyway to use on the FM and FG. Good informative video.

That fold down ai tab is a very useful feature on the fm and fe, it”# a pity they dropped it on the later bodies.

You talk about older lens having a character then modern lens . Could you do a shoot with diffrent lens on the ftz adaptor and show the difference in the lens between old lenses to the equivalent z lens images .

is it possible to simply use an external light meter to get the correct values, ignoring the camera meter?
@gujjunirmalareddy4614 жыл бұрын
Recently I bought The Nikon F3 with AF Nikkor 50mm F1.8D , but when I checked the inbuilt light metre with my sekonic light metre (external metre) the Nikon F3 reads two stop under for example , The Nikon F3 reads 1/60'th & aperture F8 with ASA 200 AND my sekonic Light metre reads in that particular situation reads as 1/60'th & aperture F4 with ASA 200 so u can see the difference. Do u think it's good idea that I should always adjust my aperture with two stops based on my sekonic reading Because The Nikon F3 didn't work without Batteries & when I put batteries inside F3 it's reads wrong ? The Nikon F3 is a semi manual Focus camera. I have to put batteries inside or else it won't fire shutter.

Hello. Do I need to stop down metering my camera with non AI lens when I shoot all the way sunny 16?

Wow straight to the point , great video ! Do you know anything about the Nikkor Q 135 2.8 lens? Is it any good in terms of sharpness etc ?
@graysofwestminster3 жыл бұрын
Haven't used the Q version specifically but the AIS is very nice, and from what I understand is much the same optical construction (although the pre-AI is 4 elements in 4 groups while the AIS is 5 elements in 4 groups).

don't you have to hit the AE-L button to lock the exposure before taking the photo?
@graysofwestminster4 жыл бұрын
Certainly if you're using Aperture Priority :) Not if you're using manual shutter & aperture speed, as you are adjusting your settings based on the readout that the camera gives you when the DOF preview button is pushed.
@andyvan56924 жыл бұрын
you showed an F2 camera initially, but said it wouldn't work with AI lenses, can you still use these lenses( the ones with an aperture ring), just "stop_down meter" with them, as they are disconnected from the metered prism. ( for those lenses without the "bunny ears").
@graysofwestminster4 жыл бұрын
You can use stop-down metering with any camera that has a DOF preview button :)
