STOP EATING NUTS? - DR. ERIC WESTMAN
[Learn with Dr. Westman: Episode 3]
Are nuts a go-to snack for you? Does your keto diet include cookies, brownies, muffins, and other treats made with nut flours and nut butters?
If these things are staples in your keto diet and you're happy with the results you've been getting, great. But if you're struggling with weight loss and your health isn't improving as much as you've been expecting, nuts and things made from them should be the first things you ditch on the road back to keto success.
Why? What's the problem with nuts?
Find out in our latest video.

In my garden, the friendly daws and magpies bring me some walnuts, chestnuts and hazelnuts every year. This is, they drop the ones that they can not open, so I open these for them and put them back. Strangely, doing this for several years in a row, they always throw these unopened nuts in one particular spot where I can easily find and open them. And following nature, I presume that this is also the time for me to eat some nuts. This season here is about from october to november. The birds must be grateful to me, and I am grateful to them for this beautiful lesson in nurture.

@@dan-qe1tb I don't believe lard and tallow are bad for you. Don't drink them, but if your carbs are low and you're using your fats for energy, it's a different economy than if the carbs are high and they just sit in your blood stream all day and all night circulating until they get oxidated and damaged, and then form plaque. Just like with oxalates it's not a reasonable dosage in a ketogenic state that makes them dangerous. It's all the other crappy inflammatory foods that cause people to hold onto them and store them longer than they should that over time causes damage after building up. I heard about a case study of someone who had WAY too many of oxalates to the point where their joints felt like they were sandpapery. Just loads of crystals they were told to cut them out slowly at a time, and they cut it all out immediately, and they died from the flood of oxalates getting flushed all at the same time. Same thing with Gall Stones and Kidney stones too. You want them to slowly leave your body a bit at a time you don't want to flush them all out dramatically all at once unless you're ready to go to surgery over it.

This is me! I started eating nuts and couldn't stop! I bought one of those big plastic containers of raw almonds and I was going into the pantry and grabbing a handful here and there without even realizing how many extra calories and carbs I was consuming. They are so addicting (for me anyways). After a few weeks of this nut binging my weight started creeping up again so I said NO MORE NUTS! I can't control them, just like I can't control sugar.

Hey Doc; I eat nuts all the time and I follow a KETO routine but I am extremely disciplined. I measure out 10 to 18 grams of pecans, macadamias or pili nuts, which is about equivalent to 1 to 2 grams of carbs and then put the rest of the bag of nuts away. I DO NOT eat peanuts, cashews or almonds. I think you are right when you say if you are not careful you will eat the whole bag. By the way I have dropped 105 lbs. since May 2021.

I do something similar with pecans, macadamias, sprouted walnuts, brazil nuts, and pumpkin seeds. Instead of weighing them, I just have a teaspoonful, except for the Brazil nuts, of which I eat exactly two. Every day I eat either no nuts and seeds or the same amount. Note that there is a big difference between net and total carbs when it comes to the nutritional content of nuts and seeds. Dr. Westman has found that for obese patients or those with metabolic syndrome, total carbs matter. Since I am fine with losing either 0 or 1 pounds every month, I focus on net carbs. I think the main downside for someone who is normal weight and has no symptoms of metabolic syndrome is that a whole-food diet may contain MORE than an ideal amount of fiber.

I've lost 70 lbs in 6 months with a ketogenic diet (no nuts to speak of) and am in weight-maintenance mode now. I discovered nut butters a few weeks ago and have been making my own (some really, really good pecan and almond butters). I've been jokingly calling it my 'healthy guilty pleasure.' Over the last week or so, I have found that I'm eating too much of it. I can't just have one spoonful. Two or three spoonfuls... sometimes more. I hadn't heard about nuts being a trigger food, until watching this video. Learned something new. Thanks. Knowing this, I'll see if I can now control my nut-butter gluttony. If I find that my weight starts creeping up, nuts will be the first thing that I cut.

I added nuts because of the problem of constipation common to low carb diets. It was the best answer I've found so far.

Plan and measure carbs and calories for the day. I started keto 6 years ago doing less than 20 carbs. I now do aproximately 35 carbs which allows me a more varied diet including pecans. I am in and out of ketosis during the day but have not put weight back on and still have good bp and a1c which I didnt have prior to going keto

Dr Westman, I TRUST YOU when you advise us to stop eating nuts. Nuts have been the downfall of every single attempt I've had to stick to a keto diet AND YES, when I over eat on nuts - which ends up happening by kidding myself I can have just one nut, have nut flours or peanut butter - AND YES, I am NEVER satisfied with my keto food/meals for long after bingeing on nuts and before I know it I'm back to eating mega amounts of junk carbs. I managed to stop this viscious cycle for 9 months and lost 30kg, then my anxiety was triggered over a period of 6 weeks after which I just got stuck into the carbs again...that was one year ago and every single week I start back on keto but barely last 3 days because the carb addiction is sooooooo hard to resist - but I'll NEVER give up, if I managed it once before I know I have it in me to do it again - my dream is to manage insulin resistance and stay fit and healthy for the rest of my life (I'm 62 years of age)... Thank you again...

This was so informative, especially the analysis of trigger foods. Nuts is definitely a trigger food for me. I can Finnish a whole bag of pistachio in one sitting, now I crave this new pomegranate vanilla cashews. Ive been spending at least 10 dollars a day on it. It’s ridiculous how bad my nuts cravings are. Im totally done, I feel completely clogged. Maybe it because I’m not eating any meat. I don't know but, Ive got to stop this addiction. Thanks for the info though, it really help me understand my triggers in foods. God bless you.

Dr. Westman, instead of foisting total carbs on everyone in order to protect the few who actually absorb fiber as carbs, wouldn't it be better to try to help people determine whether they fall into that category? Using total carbs universally seems akin to setting a single sodium intake ceiling as if everyone's BP were equally salt-sensitive.

Definitely true for me. I made the mistake of keeping a cannister on the counter and was snitching a handful every time I walk thru the kitchen (often) to go out the back door. I've decided to just not have them in the house until I reach my goals :)

I do eat nuts, and I’m experiencing pretty consistent weight loss and improved blood glucose, BUT I don’t eat them by themselves. I measure out 1/4 cup and add to greek yogurt along with some chia seeds and mixed berries. The extra protein seems to be key for me as I feel full afterwards and don’t feel the need to keep foraging for more nuts. Still, it’s a great tip for anyone struggling. Thanks, Dr E!!

This explains why my weight loss has stalled. I started a keto diet a couple of months ago, and was delighted to find so many keto dessert recipes on KZbin. So, I've been baking a lot, using almond flour and coconut flour. I guess that means no more desserts for me.

In the last few weeks I have been making artificially sweetened jelly/jello and have it mashed up with unwhipped cream or yoghurt. Also make it half strength and whip it with cream cheese - no base. I also mix cocoa powder into yoghurt and freeze it. I also buy 98% cocoa chocolate when it is on special - because of the high quality I only need 2 squares to be satisfied. I started low carb in mid October 2021. Originally I lost weight very quickly but then it plateaued. I was eating a small amount of nuts with breakfast; cashews, pecans, macadamias. Due to the cost I changed these to sunflower and pumpkin seeds. After cutting out the nuts (I still eat almonds) I have started losing weight very quickly again without even trying.

On my last trip to Sam's Club, I found and purchased a 24oz tub of Members Mark brand dry roasted Macadamia Nuts. I love these things, and it would be very easy to go hog wild on such a huge portion. I'm not giving up my macadamias, but I will use snack size baggies to assist in portion control.

I eat about 25g of macadamia, pecans or walnuts every day (together with a 16g bar of 92% chocolate). I put both in a jar for the day and eat half of it as a desert both for my breakfast/brunch and dinner. No problem stopping, as I'm already full when starting to eat them. I don't have any weight problems, though, so I'm also eating them to get the calories.

I used to do that when I was doing geological field work in Norway. I was working in a little village in the southwest of Norway. The grocery store there had a very limitied selection of food. Most of the people in the village had gardens or they drove into Bergen once a week to collect fresh fish and items that were not available in the grocery/hardware store in the village. That grocery store sold tractors and fishing boats, but only three kinds of cereal. European dark chocolate bars and one kind of peanut butter were available and that was my desert each night. Given that I was bicycling about thirty five miles a day, I had more problems keeping weight on than the need to lose weight.
