Just one little thing: it's not always applicable. For example try to use the same trick for 1-1+1-1+1-1+1-1+ ...

@@dandemen using the technique in this case would give you a result of zero. However, this problem is a bit ambiguous in that you could get a result of zero or one. I agree that it’s not applicable in all cases. In fact, using a similar technique on the sum of all positive integers yields -1/12, which holds significance in number theory and theoretical physics.
