I think it might have more to do with the swords power not working if the holder isn't pure. It's a *Holy* sword. And that sword is probably the only thing that can kill the lich. Which was why it was so important.

That wouldn't have worked anyway. A Lich always has a Phylactery that actually contains its essence of being. That Phylactery can be basically whatever they want, but most just look like green jars or skulls or something. If you don't destroy the Phylactery, you can't kill the Lich. And some have multiple phylacteries, so they can have backups in case the first one is destroyed

I like the idea of a lich that has over thousands of years enchanted themselves to be impervious to all but very few things, and then went "Ah, I'm kinda bored... I wanna, yk pass on" but can't do it themselves cuz of all the magic protection :p So they purposely do things to get peoples attention, so they can get killed by them. Like the lich never casts magic directly, but it's flavoured that it's an automatic magical defense system, as the lich like give pointers and apologies the whole time :3 Anyone up for some DND with me?
