I had a discussion with a handbag salesman at a Macy's in Portland, OR once. I was with my boyfriend at the time and a mutual friend. The friend said she didn't know who Michael Kors was -- **dramatic gasp** -- and I just explained he's a repetitive designer who steals so many of other people's designs and features, from Louis Vuitton's infamous Speedy bag, to the way he knocked off the Birkin Bag. Fashion that isn't original bores me. It's one thing to be Jill Stuart and thrive on (beautiful) minimalism. It's another thing to be Balmain and thrive off the same thing over and over. I love fashion that is artistic and avant garde. I was deeply ashamed that nobody outside of Rihanna gave a damn about the theme of the Comme de Garcon Met Gala theme. i love the way Karl completely reinvents the Chanel brand, while still respecting it's original roots of the tweed suit and LBD. And I have a dear friend who has an extremely promising career behind a sewing machine making customized dresses. (Kate Miles Couture -- check her out!)

DANA IDME Yes...we Brits are bold and not afraid to show our quirky uniqueness or rawness or vulnerability!! I don't know where the person who commented about Anna being very English and reserved gets the idea that is typical English person 😂😂 May be like that if you have watched Downton Abbey but not among us English working class people. We are a country of different personalities, beliefs, and in fact very loud and outspoken. Anna is obviously fierce, focused and strong minded to get where she has and I see that as well as someone who gets the job done and does not like drama! That is not someone who is shy lol!!
@StefB16 жыл бұрын
Us Brits can be very very outspoken, in your face and blunt - how else would we have gone and pretty much stolen land off anybody and created an empire otherwise? The idea of Brits being shy, unfriendly, cold, reserved is really not true at all.

Accepting failure, I was fired from 2 jobs in one year back in 2009 and I always was angry at myself for it. I always hid it from family and colleges and it was allot of pressure. I was convinced if anyone found out my career would be over, my career has been at a standstill since. To hear that Anna Wintour was also sacked in her career reassures me massively. I feel like I can accept it and even see that it helped me grow and be better in my job. It gives me dimension and it makes me appreciative of the job I have now.

Be decisive! Oftentimes we (me) feel afraid to come across 'bossy' or 'mean' and that can affect our decision making capacities. The point about decisiveness as comforting to those around you really resonated with me. It is comforting when someone steps up and takes charge. I also loved the experiencing new things as I have always believed in this one- but the way she worded it- "the more you experience, the more you bring back" is just so poignant =)

Rule No. 1: be a daughter of editor-in-chief of Daily Express from a rich British family.
@carmendevingt25967 жыл бұрын
Agree, but do you believe that anyone else who has a passion for fashion or whatever let's say some Eastern European from a poor family who has no relations in media or industry, isn't graduate from world class university, would even be given a chance? I really doubt it.
@ephsilonnot7 жыл бұрын
Carmen de Vingt Yes one can. If you're passionate in what you do. Maybe she had an upper hand being the daughter of an established man, but one can never continue to experience such life just based on father's name. She made her own name. As as far as coming from an unestablished background, there are people who have stood out. Mark Zuckerburg, Steve Jobbs, Shah Rukh Khan, Malala Yousoufsai. There are more names to the list, from different backgrounds and different professions. But in their diverse path one thing is common, PASSION.
@carmendevingt25967 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sure. Name at least someone from Eastern Europe who made it big without being an immigrant at an early age or becoming a model by such getting in the industry. Please give me examples. Those that you named all were Americans, while still nobody except Indians know about that Shan Rukh Khan, and Malala is a daughter of a diplomat meaning she's definitely not from poverty, again getting into politics just because of relations through her father. I'd love to know people who made it big without being from powerful families, poor and not from the Western world or being an immigrant when you're still a kid and spent most of your life in States or elsewhere, not even being able to speak your native language anymore. Why we don't know anyone from, for example from Bulgaria, Kosovo? I'm pretty sure most of readers don't even know that such countries exist. Again, you may think of Nina Dobrev, but as I mentioned, she's an immigrant of a young age still being able to adapt to a new culture and become it's full citizen.
@carmendevingt25967 жыл бұрын
I'd really love to be naive like you guys to be inspired myself, but I know what discrimination is and that stereotypes definitely play a huge role in life. It's not the same to make a career for some British person and let's say Albanian. Unless, you're extremely beautiful, then yes, beauty can lead you all the way long. But how many of ordinary people are that lucky? Not many.

1. Be decisive I try even if I don’t know what the hell i’m doing. I’m doing I try to be decisive because I think it’s very comforting and reassuring and important to the people that work with you to feel that whoever is in charge knows what they’re doing and knows what they’re thinking and that if it’s a yes it’s a yes and it’s a no. I mean I don’t think of myself as a boss, I think of myself as someone who’s giving direction and guidance so and vice versa. 2. Don’t highly specialize I aslo know career wise how important it is not to be too highly specialized especially these days in the world of media. It is crucial to have multiple interests and skill sets to have tried and possibly failed and many different undertakings the young people that we hired today at Conde Nast are fearless polymaths hardworking and passionate creative and curious. 3. Accept failure Eventually joined Harper’s Bazaar us and in 1976 it was you were fired and I find that extraordinary. I was the editor on one shoot that was I think it was a French fashion shows and I decided that it would be interesting to have dreadlocks on the models and I think that that pushed them further than they could bear so that was it for me but I, you know I think it’s always part of life to have some knocks as well as some successes. And you know do to learn so I think it’s healthy for everyone to lose a job as well as to gain a job 4. Avoid mediocrity Mediocrity, if you see a collection that is you feel the designer has been lazy or taking inspiration from other designers, it doesn’t so much as for me as anger me. 5. Be true to yourself I think it’s really to be true to yourself and listen as much as one is able to other people whose opinions you respect and look up to but in the end it has to come from you and you can’t really worry too much by looking to the left or the right about what the competition might be doing or other people in your field might be doing, it has to be a true vision. 6. Always do your best the blur about your unauthorized biography reads she’s ambitious driven needy a perfectionist and inside look at the competitive bitch a bitch world of fashion accurate? Well I’m very driven by what I do, I am certainly very competitive what else am I needy. I like people who represent the best of what they do and if that turns you into perfectionist 7. Experience new things I don’t make notes. I don’t react very instinctively to ever being I’m a great believer in traveling a great deal. I don’t believe meeting more than two people in the meeting is too many really it’s true. Do you know about stand-ups? In Silicon Valley now when you have a meeting everybody stands in a circle like they’re meditating that’s how maybe I should try that. I think more you go out, the more you see the more you experience life, the more you bring back to your day job. So as I was trying to say in my remarks I think the problem that big corporations is you get a lot of people my age trying to hold on to their jobs and you know clinging on to their pensions and their retirement and they’re not experiencing you things and they don’t like change and they don’t like disruption, so they’re either they don’t make a decision or they say no and as a result they stagnate. So it’s terribly important to bring people in from the outside and not to remain too insular and also to hire as many young bright people like all of you as you can just to teach you know how to think about things completely differently. 8. Have a sense of business I think all of us at Vogue are always looking for talent and we’re also looking for someone who has a head on their shoulders and understand that being talented is obviously important but they also have to have a sense of business and that being creative and commercial does two words that can work together. 9. Enjoy what you do It’s very important to me that I look good when I go out publicly. I like looking at my clothes rack in the morning and deciding what to pick out. I enjoy fashion Mollie. I mean I wouldn’t be in this job if I didn’t. 10. Be a good leader I think Clara tea is the one of the most important leadership qualities that one can have I think it’s really important to be very specific and very clear and what you expect and then to delegate people respond much better when they’re in a more independent environment and you’re not completely breathing down their neck all the time, the other thing I think is incredibly important is to hire divas like Andre Leon Talley who will disagree with you and contradict you and not yes you all the time and not to be scared I have people of having people working with you that have different opinions.

"Be decisive" Today I have been in charge of projects for testing. Even with fear, I had to be decisive to have good results every day. My coworkers ask me how I do it, and I just say: "I just let things flow even though I'm scared to death".
@EvanCarmichael3 жыл бұрын
Indeed, in any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is do the right thing. The worst thing you can do is nothing. 😊 #Believe - Feb

I love that she acknowledges the importance of failure, the danger of over-specialization and I definitely love the „be true to yourself” rule (I even have a blog - truetoyourself.ro. Should you be interested, some articles are also published in English - www.truetoyourself.ro/category/english/). Thank you for your work! Lots of joy and inspiration to you!
