In my opinion, it’s okay to cast a celebrity once in awhile as long as they have good voice acting skills. But if there casted just to get distribution or for marketing reasons, then I say no.

Look up Jetsons the Movie and what it did with a celebrity of that time. This was before Rovin Williams and Aladdin. Andrea Romano, who was the casting director for this movie would later go on to work on Batman the Animated Series, and she always brought out the best in whoever she could. So it's no surprise she was furious with the execs at Universal. It's important for us not to blame Tiffany for this because she was young, and she herself wanted them to tell her if she needed to redo things, but they never did. I wonder how Tiffany feels looking back. But yeah, you should do a follow-up where you mention the Jetsons movie and what happened. In fact, Andrea Romano herself was never a fan of recasting and tried to do it as few times as possible.

The title of the video is clearly gonna get some controversies. Because I learned apparently that if a movie, animated or live action, doesn't have any A-list celebrities, like Dwayne Johnson or Chris Pratt, you have little chance of distribution. Which in my opinion sound like bullcrap.

the sad part is Disney has the name recognition to promote their own product. Without blowing up their budget with A list celebrities. Their old movies are proof of that.

I just discovered your channel and honestly, good work on this video because this trend in Hollywood getting annoying. I keep hearing some people justify the reason behind the celebrity voice cast as the movie needing them to make money when there are cases of that barely being the case. Sometimes those movies are bad and sometimes they are good but still bomb at the box office, proving the idea that a celebrity voice cast does not guarantee a movie's success. This trend only became popular due to Aladdin casting Robin Williams as The Genie and other studios copied the same idea, failing to realize why Robin as the Genie worked so well and that was because the character was designed to be played by him. This has gotten worse in my opinion with them getting Chris Hemsworth for Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated prequel film, I am not mad that they didn't get Peter Cullen for young Optimus Prime; I am mad that they didn't cast a real voice actor. It's even worse with Scarlett Johansson as the main female lead in that movie, she was good in the Spongebob movie from twenty years ago but now her voice sounds so stoic and her recent stuff is just her regular voice. There are plenty of voice actors with range and experience that could've given them a youthful Optimus Prime who are way better than Chris Hemsworth.
@surraliaproductions799 Жыл бұрын
I was actually thinking about that prequel movie when I was watching this. For me, it depends on HOW young Optimus is . . . if he's basically a kid, like the alien robot equivalent of 12-18, then fine. But if he's more of a young adult (20s-30s sounding), which I'd assume is the kind of voice that you would want Hemsworth for, then I'd make the case that Peter Cullen would actually STILL be the best choice. His normal speaking voice already kind of sounds like a softer, slightly higher-pitched Optimus, he has decades of experience with the character's personality and inflection, and cares immensely about him. If there's some reason why he SPECIFICALLY is uncomfortable voicing a young-sounding Optimus, I guess I'd deal with it . . . but the man has been saying publicly for a while now that he'd love to play in a dedicated Optimus origin movie, so I guess the fact that one is FINALLY coming, but the people making it don't seem to have even bothered to try working with him (as far as I know), just kinda rubs me the wrong way. In fact, I might even tack on to this that it's just as bad that Frank Welker won't be playing Megatron. For the same reasons as above (he's been playing teenage Fred Jones since Scooby-Doo came out, so I know he can at least sound young in principle . . . though whether he could translate that to Megatron I guess would be up to him), but also because he's been repeatedly shunted out of major Transformers projects (like the first three live action movies and at least one of the biggest games), and I've never understood why. That, and he's good friends with Peter Cullen in real life, so they have awesome chemistry in pretty much any scene where they get to play off each other. Which would be GREAT for a movie that I'm assuming focuses mostly on the relationship between Optimus and Megatron. I absolutely agree with everything else you said, though. Sorry if this was a bit of an unprovoked essay, but I'd never really seen anyone bring that specific prequel up until now and I suppose I hadn't realized just how much it irritated me.
@HenryLouis21 Жыл бұрын
@@surraliaproductions799 I agree with everything you just said. I actually don't mind the new voice actors playing Megatron in recent years, like Marc Thompson and Rory McCann are doing stellar work as Megatron in those shows, but it still baffles me how they haven't gotten Frank to do Megatron since 2017. I get they wanted someone young for Optimus Prime but if I were the people behind the movie, I would've cast Josh Keaton for the role. If you wanna know what that would be like, just check my channel for a video of me casting him as young Optimus Prime. I don't know why they went with Chris Hemsworth of all people because nothing about his performances in anything makes me think he'd be a good voice actor for Optimus. I think the only answer is because he is popular and has a deep voice. Yeah, it still baffles me how they are not even bothering to hire actual professional voice actors for the roles, then again, I shouldn't be surprised considering this is Hollywood and they will skip out on professional VAs in favor of big-named celebs.

You might want to look from the other sides of the world. Look at how Studio Ghibli and most original Japanese animated films that are not adaptations of an existing media usually put live action actors or celebrities as voice actors. Not talking about their English dubs here because you know, Disney is behind it for Ghibli films.

I dream of creating an animated movie about the kitten that belongs to a young girl with cancer ending up in the land of the lost pets. I'd call it "Kether and the Land of Lost Pets." I bring this upbecause a friend and I were debating on if we were to cast it, would we have someone like Mila Kunis voice Kether, or whether we'd have Tara Strong do her voice. We also thought about other roles, such as the king of the land of Lost Pets, Pugsley. Would we have a famous singer like Luke Briant voice him, or would we just get Michael J. Anderson or Jeff Bennett to voice him. Same with Pugsley's 3 henchmen. Midnight, would we get her to be voiced by let's say Natalie Maines, or Vanessa Marshal? Tubby: Would we want him to be voiced by Seth Rogen or Charlie Adler? And Tupper: Would we want him to be voiced by Billy Crystal or Rob Paulsen? Midnight is the female no nonsense henchcat, and Tubby and Tupper are the two bumbling henchcats who often act as comic releaf by messing up a lot, much t Midnight's annoyance. Would you get Natalie Maines, Seth Rogen and Billy Crystal, or would Vanessa Marshal, Charlie Adler and Rob Paulsen do better? These are things that my friend and I discussed, and my answer was "What would Andrea Romano do?" If I won lotto max, then I'd use the money to make this, and I'd personally go with the professional VAs like Tara Strong, Vanessa Marshal, Charlie Adler and Rob Paulsen. What would you do?

I would stick with professional voice actors, and only hire a celebrity if I knew he or she would do a good job. I don't have a problem with hiring celebrities to voice act if they do a good job, like Robin Williams as Genie in Aladdin, but it seems like most of them either don't take it seriously or do a terrible job.
